They had a segment on a tv show recently where they found people who had seen Hachiko in the flesh. They all remembered seeing him waiting to be given the leftovers of the yakitori restaurants...
>people who had seen Hachiko in the flesh He was taxidermied and was put on display at the National Science Museum of Japan, so you can go and see him in the flesh too.
Ok. The story of Hachiko makes me cry every time but damnit if this comment didn't make me snarf my tea. Well done.

My dog died almost 20 years ago and it's still the worst day of my life. When I went to Japan the first time, I tried going up to the Hachiko statue and just couldn't do it because I would inevitably get too choked up.
If he really was there just for the food, he’d have headed off with whoever gave him treats. He wouldn’t have stayed there.

How does the dog getting food invalidate him waiting for his owner?

The story of Hachiko makes me cry every damn time. There's a statue of him outside Shibuya station that honors his memory.

Funny thing in case someone didnt know: The statue is not original, the first one was melted by Japanese Imperial Government to help in war efforts since japan, at the time, was passing through a major crisis in raw material and decided to use anything to feed its war industry. Although Japanese radio did say the statue was given a "serviceman send-off".
I would have tracked down everything that metal was used to make and rebuilt it. And if it was used on bigger projects I'd take all that metal too and make a mega dog statue.
A good chunk of that metal is probably at the bottom of the ocean right now

You don't want to be here right now trust me. Japanese summers are hot as hell and people are dropping from heatstroke left and right.

Don't do it. Cried like a baby during the entire movie and not in a good way it fucked me up bad. Just thinking about him makes me want to cry. The Futurama episode Jurassic Park makes me bawl every single time
The idea of heart broken dog just breaks my heart. It’s almost too much.

We had a bonded pair of border collies and lost one to cancer at only about 4 or 5. The other one, while still my baby and still playful and loving, was never quite the same. She tried but after she recovered from the worst of the sorrows her personality was just slightly different for the rest of her life.
I’m so sorry this happen to you and your babies. I have a border collie mix and she’s so attached to me that I really am scared of not outliving her. I’m not old or elderly, but the thought of her being alone and me never coming home to her, kills me inside. They tend to be very particular dogs, which is both awesome and not.
Its kinda the case with most dogs. I have a shiba, hes friendly and loving to everybody. But at the end of the day, he's MY dog and I am his best friend. Even if he plays with other people all day, walks with them and eats their snacks all day, when I come home late from work he MUST have time with me. When either of us goes, the other will never be the same. Having that loyal companion is bitter-sweet.
I've seen/been through a lot of shit, but the saddest thing I ever experienced was seeing my brother's dogs waiting for him to come home after he passed away.
Theres a famous statue of him at Scramble Crossing Square in Shibuya. Its pretty cool.

When I was in Tokyo in 2017 I walked by it and there was a bunch of camera crews and a whole crowd and someone was putting a sash on the statue and everyone was applauding. Must have been an anniversary or something, it was just interesting to see.
Wow I wonder if we were there the same day. I also went in 2017 and saw a bunch of folks (lots of policemen IIRC) that dressed Hachiko in some garb. We were still allowed to go near the statue.

I mean, my dog likes me but I don't know if he likes me that much lol. Maybe my wife. If she leaves the house without him he mopes around until she comes back.
[Rare Earth has an amazing video on him](https://youtu.be/M-gUq3opk6g) Although be warned, he mentions a fact that makes the story even more depressing. >!If Rare Earth is to be believed (which I do) it's extremely likely that Hachiko was pushed, kicked, and generally abused by commuters. He was a large dog in the Tokyo metro. People were either afraid of him or annoyed by him. I'm glad he gained fame and clearly was loved by the time he passed. But it's still sad to think about.!<
I just watched the video and take my comments with a grain of salt, but a lot of that video sounds like he pulled it out his ass to be profound- see my profile picture as source. Only 3 dozen Akitas post the kill order? That's way wrong, on two fronts (talk to any breeder, we already had them and people were hiding them in Japan). Says the kill order was for starvation and not for distemper and pelts? I mean, maybe, it's not like I was there, but neither was he. In the same breath he talks about how the dog was revered, but also mistreated? Does he Japanese? For a couple hundred years commoners weren't allowed to even own Akitas in Japan. The Emperor of Japan at the turn of the 20th century publicized his relationship with the breed and made them accessible to the public, literally teetering on worship status.
" However, Hachiko would return to the station every day for 9 years, waiting for him to come back" I'm not gonna cry... I'm not gonna cry, fuck I'm crying
His statue was a frequent meeting place for us in the 90s, when we had to make and keep plans to find each other in advance.

Hachiko is probably the goodest of the good boys. I get misty-eyed just thinking about his story.
By the way, if you ever end up in Tokyo you can pay your respects at the Hachiko statue. It’s on one of the corners of the Shibuya crosswalks, the street crossings you see in all movies with a Tokyo setting. Literally millions cross every day… and Hachiko still waits for his master’s return.
Fuck you for making my heart hurt, Reddit. I'm terrified I may have to rehome my beautiful dog because of my unstable living situation. Gonna go cry against her fur and feel her breathe, you motherfuckers. Edit: Sorry for the name calling. Thanks to everyone who read my post. :)
