I saw a lot of gore in the internet back in the day, but those audio tapes are actually more haunting than that. Keep strong and away for your mental health.
Audio stuff really gets me. Idk man if you’re on the internet long enough eventually you’re gonna see some messed up shit even when you don’t want too, so I think I’ve gotten used to that, but the audio stuff is chilling.
That and the first mother wailing when her baby died haunts me.

Well, also because if all the adults did it first then there'd just be a load of kids not knowing what to do.. Im sure what you said factored into it, but it sounds like a (disgusting) practicality more than specifically for leverage.
Yep, listened to it once on a podcast and got so viscerally angry and distraught by the sounds of the children that I had to pull over and regain my composure. 0/10, do not recommend.
Damn - were they in agony from the the poison they drank? I never even thought that it must’ve been a painful way to die until now…

> During this time, aides prepared a large metal tub with grape Flavor Aid, poisoned with diphenhydramine, promethazine, chlorpromazine, chloroquine, chloral hydrate, valium, and cyanide. That's from the wiki. Not a fun mix of things to put into your body and it was supposedly far from instant. Some other quotes: > The poison caused death within five minutes for children, less for babies, and an estimated 20–30 minutes for adults. And here's something Jones said > I tell you, I don't care how many screams you hear, I don't care how many anguished cries ... death is a million times preferable to 10 more days of this life. If you knew what was ahead of you—if you knew what was ahead of you, you'd be glad to be stepping over tonight.
Something I can't get out of my mind is the children screaming and crying and that bitch on the recording saying "they're not crying from pain, it's just a little bitter tasting". It's a terrible way to die and not at all painless.

I would recommend a book called Chaos by Tom O'Neill about the Manson murders if you're still interested in that subject. It is one of the most riveting takes on the subject I've ever heard.
Yeah it’s not just like you drink it and drop dead. It suffocates you I think. They mixed it with a bunch of tranquilizers to take the edge off but they got the mix wrong and people didn’t lose consciousness as quickly as they expected them to. Also many people were possibly forcibly injected. They don’t know for sure because they let the bodies sit in the jungle heat for days before repatriating them to the US. And I don’t think they even ID’d all the bodies.
This wasnt as much mass suicide as people think. You either drank the koolaid or you got shot. Some people managed to escape, but they were basically prisoners there. It was deep in the jungle.
The whole thing kicked off because one of the residents of Jonestown was passing a note to who he thought was congressman Leo Ryan saying essentially that there were people who wanted to leave. Well, he dropped the note and one of the Jonestown children saw it and started shouting "he passed a note, he passed a note!". Jim Jones had a LOT of people brainwashed that everyone was out to get them. That the government was basically going to slaughter them all en masse and the only way out was to commit "revolutionary" suicide. I don't doubt that there were a lot of people, especially those in the inner circle and in the planning commission that gratefully laid down their lives for Jim Jones. But, Jones was a mass murderer, you're right. There were a lot of bodies that were shot/had needle marks at least suggesting that they weren't all willing to die for him. Jim had a problem with people leaving him. He saw any defection as an act of ultimate betrayal, even when he was a child he saw it as such. There was no way in hell that he was going to let anybody go once he got them down to Guyana. Some people were even asking him to let the ones who want to leave go and he just couldn't/wouldn't do it.
Was going to say this! These people were screwed either way.

> It suffocates you I think. It's horrible. Cyanide basically blocks the cells ability to use oxygen for energy. So even though you're breathing fine, your body is **SCREAMING** in pain, trying to get you to take in more oxygen.

Like they’d inject babies/toddlers/ young kids who couldn’t drink it, with syringes. I’ll never forgot the person in the helicopter who found them saying he thought it was a big quilt on the ground from afar, before realizing it was hundreds of dead bodies stacked against each other.
>It suffocates you I think Cyanides (anything with a CN- binded to it, like HCN, hydrogen cyanide) bind themselves to an iron atom in a protein in the mitochondria. That protein plays a role in producing energy from ATP in your cells, effectively disrupting the process. So, yeah, your cells become incapabale of producing energy by breathing. I hope I got that down right.
>我觉得那会让人窒息
氰化物(任何含有氰基 CN- 的物质,比如 HCN,即氰化氢)会与线粒体中蛋白质里的铁原子结合。那种蛋白质在细胞通过 ATP 产生能量的过程中起着关键作用,这一结合实际上就破坏了整个过程。
所以,没错,你的细胞会因为无法呼吸而没法再产生能量了。
我希望我没记错。

There's a video floating around of Michael Marin - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Marin - taking cyanide in a courtroom after being found guilty of arson. It looks and sounds like an absolutely horrific way to die.
Cyanide has a stupidly fast onset for an orally taken poison, it starts unpowerhousing the mitochondria pretty much seconds after ingesting. Any kind of tranquilizer will have absolutely no benefit unless taken before hand as they’ll take minutes to kick in.
I regret listening to that honestly. One of the few things where my curiousity was more than it should’ve been. The babies wails while jones evil drugged out ass tells the moms to give it to the kids first gave me nightmares - and I’m a fully grown adult. The voices were a shock to me. I didn’t know until I read some of the info at https://jonestown.sdsu.edu that a majority of Jonestown communists were poor black people, many of whom were drawn in by Jones’ anti-racism rhetoric and dreams of communist utopia. Reading the letters made my heart break, many of them mentioning lives in unpleasant areas of the city and you can literally hear and see why they got pulled into this nightmare - and hearing the people on the death tape who resisted using the language of the cult… just heart rending. Posting this with the link as that website is an actual preserved record of the voices of the victims of Jonestown. Reading it made me resolve to never make any “drink the kool aid” jokes again. Also learning that it was mostly a murder. Only the top tier enforcers commited suicide, and after making sure everyone else did commit suicide. It’s in the planning documents, all laid out in black and white.
People always think they would never get pulled into a cult. That they would see the writing on the wall and be able to avoid it. The problem is, everyone has an Achilles heel and someone will find it. It can be loneliness, poverty, feeling stupid or underappreciated, feeling ugly, etc. I realized that when I was about 20 and single and some guy selling magazine subscriptions referred to my girlfriend who would really enjoy it. I was so flattered he thought I could have a girlfriend that I signed up. It was stupid and it wouldn't work again, but he found that Achilles heel and he got the result he wanted. Everyone has something like that and the more you think you don't, the more vulnerable you are. In that case, arrogance is the weakness.
My aunt/uncle/cousins lived next his to residence in Redwood Valley in NoCal. One of my cousins was friends with Jim Jr. My uncle declined invites to go over and wouldn’t let my cousin play with him after awhile. Then Jim sr. took everyone south to SF. Crazy how history is so removed yet also so real. My uncle actually committed suicide on the Russian River in Ukiah, but he didn’t let his family get involved with peoples temples. But JJ jr. was pretty cool I hear.
His nurse I think. She shot herself after. She could have been a side bitch since he was fucking most of the women.

I read they did fake out runs too, where they’d drink un-poisoned liquid, with the belief that it was poisoned: >Everyone, including the children, was told to line up. As we passed through the line, we were given a small glass of red liquid to drink. We were told that the liquid contained poison and that we would die within 45 minutes. We all did as we were told. When the time came when we should have dropped dead, Rev. Jones explained that the poison was not real and that we had just been through a loyalty test. He warned us that the time was not far off when it would become necessary for us to die by our own hands. Some people may not have even realised this was the real thing.
>Some people may not have even realised this was the real thing Maybe the very first people but it would've been pretty obvious after a short while. They didn't die peacefully. E: oh also we have a good idea of what the final hours were like. They had audio recordings. It's basically a lot of crying and screaming (especially from children) with some of the leaders chastising everyone for being scared.
It’s been a while, but I want to say it was Jim Jones himself chewing out his followers for allowing the children to cry and wail through what he was considering to be a dignified, sacred event. He wanted them to die with dignity, despite the fact they were thousands of miles away from their homeland dying a horrible death. An absolute narcissist to the very end.
Yes and no. Many (probably most) seemed to want to do it. If you listen to the “death tapes” there is one woman who comes forward to argue against doing the “revolutionary suicide” thing and she gets shouted down.
I had a college professor who was a young adult doing a summer research project near Sacramento when Jones lived there. He met Jones a number of times. Several of his peers were quite taken with Jones, and a young lady he was close with ended up full on joining the cult. She would later die at Jonestown. He went on to become a renowned sociologist who extensively studied cults and reclusive groups. His stories were fascinating.
That’s interesting. The thing about Jones is he was actually (at least partly) a force for good in the community. He would take people in and reform them and his group would go out and do all this community service stuff. But then he got more and more into drugs and power and paranoia and probably mental illness, plus law enforcement was looking at him and he was likely facing pretty serious legal charges so he absconded to the jungle in Guyana. Then when they pursued him there he decided to kill everybody and himself
Damn, I read this really good article laying out how tight knit that community had been (and some really good context around the racial aspect - the majority of Jonestown victims were black), but can’t find it now.
Yeah I’ve read a lot about that. It all sounds true, especially from the early days of the movement. But then it spiraled out of control for the reasons mentioned
I remember reading in a book about Jonestown where the author said that if Jim Jones had diverged from the Temple around the mid to late 60s, he probably would have been a damn good politician. Because it's true that he spent most of his early life with the temple legitimately trying to help people. He was a leading activist in Indianapolis for desegregation and ran several successful soup kitchens. All that context just makes his turn to mass murderer all the more horrible I think.
Eerie is not the right description. It's devastating to listen to.

My 5th grade teacher played some of his earlier speeches from right before they all moved for our health class, and even those were so unsettling knowing the context.
Fun fact: although they all took poisoned store brand Kool Aid, the poison didn’t kill most of them. A lot of people tried to back out last minute and escape and were shot down by armed guards. The ones the poison didn’t kill were also shot.
IIRC it was organized so that there were people assigned to make sure others followed through, down to one woman who was responsible for making sure even Jones died. I think there was evidence that she may have then wandered around for a while before killing herself last.
It was so organized that they even had a procedure to shoot and kill the chimpanzee they kept as a mascot. It was found dead from a gunshot to the back of the head full execution style.
Pretty sure the *last* thing I would want to do there is fucking wander around… not like there’s a lot of nice stuff to look at.

I said that to a friend one time, and a person completely unrelated to the conversation interjected to tell me that is a racist comment and that I should be ashamed. I asked if they know who Jim Jones is, and, I swear to whatever god is listening, they said “I don’t listen to rap”.
I think they were trying to be edgy and came off as stupid. “Black people = drink kool-aid” and the last part is a [South Park The Movie](https://youtu.be/Pi5zxL2e27k) reference
600 people drank willingly, some of those 600 also injected themselves directly with the poison to prove their loyalty. 300 people refused and were murdered. 1 person walked up to the guards, asked politely to be dismissed, and they told him to have a nice life and let him go.
I think he unfortunately became homeless later after returning to the US.

It prevents your cells from using oxygen. Interesting Fact: Guyana was happy to have a large community of Americans near the border with Venezuela because Venezuela was trying to annex parts of Guyana. A large group of Americans would make Venezuela think twice about invading as it would set off an international incident.
You’re not getting complete answers so here’s my attempt. Jim jones was a cult leader who convinced a whole bunch of Americans to set up a commune in South America. The families of his followers had been petitioning the government to do something about this guy since his Jonestown wasn’t the utopia he promised it would be and his followers weren’t allowed to leave. A congressman and maybe some reporters flew down to investigate. Jones had the congressman killed before he could get back to the states. Now, I’m not sure how he thought he could get away with killing a congressman, but after that happened he realized the jig was up and decided to take everyone down with him.
I think killing the congressman was part of the whole plan that would culminate with mass suicide. It had been in the works for weeks. They had been stockpiling cyanide and guns.
Just to add an interesting part of the psychology behind why so many did it and a large part of the motivation that people gloss over leading up to the night came from Jones setting up his followers to believe the US army or CIA were about to come crashing down on them at any moment guns blazing and kill them regardless of whether they decided to kill themselves or not because Jim claimed they hated what they stood for as spiritual revolutionaries, they (military) would shoot any of them including the kids either way, couldn't have the world see their communal utopia filled with socialist US citizens, were racist etc etc so committing their "revolutionary act of suicide" together was under the belief that they would be killed by the US military whether they took the poison or not. Jim tells them to deny the US military the opportunity to end them and commit a revolutionary act for the world to see. Killing Congressman Ryan was likely a mix of things, deliberate in order to kick off the series of events to have the US military come get them "for sure" that he'd been setting up for a long time anyway and the fact someone with actual power to do something about Jim came along and meddled to a large degree.I don't think he expected to get away with it but thought he might possibly forestall the military's arrival by not letting Ryan get back to America to grass on them, he wanted it to be the moment where he'd say "see they do want to get us and now there's no going back so do it yourself quickly before they do it for you." It's mentioned in the book Road to Jonestown and some tapes where he's basically counting down the hours until the US military arrives and pushing people on with it. He ran fake invasions where the US military were "spotted" heading towards them in the jungle around their compound by followers he had set to defensive patrols looking out for "the moment" they finally came to get them alongside his fake poison drinking sessions. Someone pointed it out but their comment is now gone but these night drills were called "White Nights", he drilled everyone on the arrival of the army, had people stationed on radio and watch towers away from the compound and warned them all that they had to kill themselves because they wouldn't just be killed when "they" arrived but the US government intended to torture all of them too, including children. Congressman Ryan's visit was like confirmation for a lot of them that the US really was preparing and watching them and would be swooping in guns blazing at any moment and that Ryan was just there to get an idea of the situation before it happened (as well as trying to take away followers and being passed secret notes), he meddled a bit too much and Jim saw it as a sure thing they'd be stopped soon one way or another so killed him as he tried to fly home, the bridges were burned and they were definitely going to be shut down now and the US army "is just a few hours away now" like Jim said. Jones is basically like "this is it, after Ryan the military is coming and they'll be here soon so let's not let them kill us or take us either" and commit a "revolutionary act" of suicide instead. Also one more thing. Jones was a fucking door to door monkey salesman at one point. What's that about haha. Also supposedly as a child in school Jones used to make the other kids play soldiers where he was the one giving the orders, **as a Nazi commander**, in between giving made up fire and brimstone sermons to the other children emulating the over the top showmen evangelists he had seen... Everyone needs to read Road to Jonestown. It's an unbelievable book.

You get distracted by how nuts he is, but then by the end here, you're remembering that there are plenty of innocent people and children that are part of this. And even worse, the people who realized what was up with the drunk probably just got shot by the guards. What an awful event in human history.

The audiotapes of the suicides are bone-chilling, as people try to argue not to do it. Kids crying. Then silence.
I remember this. And remember this happened long before the internet. You first saw the report in a newspaper, then the 5:30 national news. Then waited until the morning paper to learn more.
One of the craziest things about this tragic saga is the fact Jim Jones once had the support of leading Democratic politicians in California, appeared at an event with the First Lady (Carter's wife), and many of the leading leftist activists in the Bay Area supported him based on his social justice message. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Jones was a narcissist involved in financial and sexual exploitation the whole time. These deaths hit the Black community of San Francisco particularly hard and I was told by a resident that during that time you couldn't find a Black family that didn't know someone who died in Jonestown.
