Someone loved him enough to get this done. Hope he had a good life.
kakka_rot219 赞2022/5/13
Yeah, really curious what the cost of something like this was at the time.
Tino_110 赞2022/5/13
Considering how much professional photos cost even today when the tech is available to literally anyone, it probably wasn't cheap.
Probably did. At least as well as a black person would have in that timeframe. He's well-groomed, has hands that haven't been worked hard, wears well-fitting shoes and clothes. His parents were likely very well-off.

There actually was a fairly thriving Black Middle Class in the 1920s concentrated in certain urban areas. DC, Harlem etc. It's quite probable that he was part of that.

I've heard stories about the beautiful communities that were sadly often destroyed when the interstate/highway systems came through

Or angry mobs of white people… or the government just ran through it.

good for him. im glad he had the chance to live the best life he could have at that time

> has hands that haven't been worked hard You can’t even see the side of his hands that would show he’s been worked hard lol

dont fuck this up for me
If you think only the bottom of your hands show work... all that shows is you must have a privileged life free of labour. Top of my hands are scarred and laboured and I doubt I've worked as much as any slave. No idea if this guy was a slave or if he had to work his life, but all I do know..is you can't just look at his hands and say he isn't worked.
Slavery was definitely illegal by 1920 lmao. By over 50 years, too.
In a technical sense sure but look up how a lot of mining towns operated and I'd be hard-pressed to call that anything but slavery. [This song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTCen9-RELM) was written about towns like that where the company would move you away from home and put you in their own company-owned town. Then they'd charge you ridiculous prices for basic necessities, where you'd have to put yourself in debt just to not starve, then put you in an endless cycle of debt so you'd work for them until you died.

On scrolling I thought he was an amputee with a prosthetic leg at first. Glad to see it wasn’t, and a stately pose either way
Haha same, I was like, what a fancy wooden leg!
I was thinking he must be from a higher class family with how fancy his leg was. I'm smrt
Salty_Coast_721417 赞2022/5/13
I thought the same!
Guess I'm not the only one. Though I thought he had a fancy peg leg or something.

He very well may have lived a beautiful and fruitful life, even though it was almost certainly filled with horrible racism directed against him.
Not necessarily. He looks healthy and well dressed here. It's not like every black person in history had a depressing, miserable, existence.

When I see old photos like this, I always wonder what became of the person. Was this boy treated well and did he have a good life? Guess we'll never know.

Great photo, but boy do a lot of old fabrics look like they itched.
tiddy_37 赞2022/5/13
My phone’s brightness was low when I first saw this and it looked like an awesome peg leg. Anyway after a few minutes and getting my wife I realized this dapper gentleman does, in fact, have 2 legs.
What a dapper young gentleman

Anytime I see kids in the 1920s all I think is they probably got drafted in the war. Hope he did alright.

That's cool that you have a glass neg collection. Do you have a tumblr or instagram of them? I actually took a class, many years ago, on 19th century photo processes. Glass negs were the most difficult thing I've ever created, shot and processed in all my years as a photographer. But their look is amazing, nothing quite like them.

Amazing photo. Makes you feel like you could step into it. That chair leg is like 3D. Really shows what we sacrificed for color and convenience through time.
