That was considerably worse than I expected

This is the worst form possible, boosted by a low immune system. Normally it is a local infection, where your nervous system gets damaged, causing a red areas, that hurt at first and later are just numb. If it is untreated it can merge into elephantiasis, but this degradation is very unfortunate.
JFHan2011976 赞2022/2/3
Is it positively correlated with malnutrition? Knowing late Qing China I can't help but wonder if nutrition has anything to do with this advanced progression.
sonofsonofsonofsam821 赞2022/2/3
Yes. Like many things ur body is much better at fighting things (immune system) when healthy and similarly one of the reasons it’s not seen much in the West.

Aha! I've been looking for an expert such as you! I've never really played a video game - I know, I'm a bit weird, lol! I spend too much time reading books. I keep thinking I should try gaming, just to be a bit more "normal". What do you recommend I try to get started?
Ravenhaft42 赞2022/2/3
Lol try Stardew Valley. It has a lot of heart and it’s not stressful or super time dependent. There’s no “losing”. Pretty much any computer you can buy can run it. It was made by one guy in his free time just for fun.
SubcommanderMarcos15 赞2022/2/3
Depends vastly on your other interests. Gaming, like books, films or any other art form, is broad encompassing and filled with a billion genres that can cater to pretty much anyone. If you like thriller books, there's thriller games. If you like romance, there's that. If you like violence, there's plenty. If you like politics, there's politics. If you're into engineering, there's a whole world. Sports? There's that. And so on.

Mycobacterium leprae causes leprosy or Hansen's disease. They are classified under neglected tropical diseases and treated via multi-drug therapy which includes Rifampicine and Dapsone. Multi drug because you don't want bacteria to acquire resistance. Curiously, it is one of the hardest bacteria to culture in laboratory settings and therefore harder to study and can lie dormant is human body for nearly a decade. UPDATE: They have excellent immune deception skills just like tuberculosis which also is caused by another Mycobacterium. It isn't spread easily (it ~~was previously thought to be~~ is not highly contagious) and therefore the stigma attached with the disease has to do with the powerful visual as suggested by the image. Mix with orthodox religious nonsense (both western and eastern cultures) led to persecution and discriminatory laws which are now under scrutiny. Still considered endemic to tropical parts of the world and requires national public health programs in order to control and eradicate it.
SubcommanderMarcos26 赞2022/2/3
It's not contagious? How does transmission happen?
Pushkar37944 赞2022/2/3
It is contagious but not by touch , similiar to TB it transmits through airborne droplets like cough or sneeze

alwaysmyhonor32 赞2022/2/4
It has a low pathogenicity, so yes it’s easy to come in contact with the bacteria, but 95% of people who contract it don’t actually get leprosy.

A couple years back a policeman came into our school to persuade us to not do drugs. He spoke about Krokodil and even showed us a video of a girl in a hospital screaming in agony while the flesh of her arm has melted off, leaving just the bone. Although my country(not Russia) has a lot of problems, cops remain quite convincing.
Vreejack326 赞2022/2/3
Problem with a lot of these cop talks was that they would often go on and on about the evils of marijuana, only for the kids to quickly discover on their own that it was all bullshit, and that--by extension--all drug concerns were bullshit. So the police were inadvertently encouraging drug use for many children.
BonelessGod666114 赞2022/2/3
That was the great failure of the DARE program. Tell kids cigarettes and marijuana are equally as bad as Meth and Heroin. ("Cigarettes are as addictive as Heroin" is a common anti-smoking theme). The kids who's parents and older siblings actually smoked it could set them straight. The kids from strict abstinence households learned about drugs in college and go right off the rails trying everything they can get their hands on.
Liquid_Senjutsu75 赞2022/2/3
Can confirm every word of this. They went to such great lengths to convince us that every drug was the same; everything is heroin-level bad, mmkay? One pot brownie in 10th grade was all it took for that whole tree of lies to burn down, along with any trust we might have had in any and every authority figure. After that, our drug use was as much science as it was rebellion. Since everybody we trusted to be in the know had lied to us, it was on us to find out which drugs were actually dangerous, and which ones weren't. There truly has never been a generation as mind-fuckingly stupid as the Boomers.
BonelessGod66628 赞2022/2/4
As a 43M, an Xennial if you will, it's gotta be the fucking lead. It was everywhere when they were growing up, in gasoline, in the water, it the paints and lubricants.. places you wouldn't even think. They are so fucking dumb it isn't funny and they need to be rooted out of positions of power wherever they are.
Kaio_19 赞2022/2/4
> Since everybody we trusted to be in the know had lied to us, it was on us to find out which drugs were actually dangerous, and which ones weren't. This rings so true. They even told me that LSD would make you do psychotic things like jump off buildings, all I did was calmly walked around the forest and watched movies. It is alcohol that does the most to bring out violence and carelessness in me.
Entelegent97 赞2022/2/3
Yeah, the guy that came didn't even mention Marijuana, or more of a "from time to time we seize it", but damn did he go on about hard drugs. Going back to my story about Krokodil.
fruitybrisket115 赞2022/2/3
Sounds much more effective the the old DARE programs in the US where we just hear "drugs are bad, mkay? If your smell a skunk while your parents are in the garage you need to tell a teacher, mkay?"
TzunSu61 赞2022/2/3
D. A. R. E stands out for increasing drug use in kids that did the program high enough that it was scientifically measurable.

Child of the south, I was in school when DARE was at its peak, and while I recognize DARE was a failed effort (not that they cared to try, it was a sham), the police who would come and talk to our school never brought up weed (GA cops are known for smoking weed tho so lol). I recall this one story we were told about a man who was tripping bad, thought he was being eaten by wolves. They 'couldn't do anything' for him and had to let him sweat it out. Said they were 'haunted' by the screams. The story could and may very well be bullshit, but I can at least say weed was never brought up in the DARE programs used in Fulton County, GA during 91-94. The reason this stands out to me is because I was kind of surprised to hear about the 'gateway drug' talking point. As a teen, everyone smoked weed, everyone knew what it was like. Felt like the cops understood that too, but again, it's likely due to GA (and the mason-dixie line really) having a *long* history of black market marijuana operations.
ProcrastinatorSkyler28 赞2022/2/3
In my DARE program in 5th grade I was told by a straight faced uniformed cop that smoking weed would make my dick fall off

Last dance with Mary Jane. She stole my dick but I feel no pain. Did you ever wonder even for a moment how many people out there had lost theirs?
ScotchIsAss29 赞2022/2/3
I always felt the best thing they could do is round up a few tweakers from Waffle House or the local Walmart parking lot and just be like this is what drugs do to you. Showing the results of hard drug use is a lot more effective then talking about it.
BenjaminSkanklin39 赞2022/2/3
I found that so fascinating when the pictures first started to surface. Two really stuck with me - the video of the guy in the hospital with his leg normal around his knee, an 8 inch section of raw bone, and then the rotting remains of his foot wrapped in saran wrap. The doctor says a few things, takes a look under the plastic wrap, and summarily saws the bottom portion of his leg off. The other one was a woman in her 20s, who you could tell was probably good looking before her face became pocked and bloody and portions of her legs were rotting off her body. She took the photo laying down in a pose you might find in a magazine and I always thought that was morbidly interesting

Anyone born in the 1950s or later should carry little or no fear with the disease. Leprosy has been a part of human history for thousands of years, and thus, I can understand the reputation it has. Interestingly, though, leprosy carries a low pathogenicity and is not highly contagious.

lepromicron?
kromem72 赞2022/2/3
FYI: The lepers in really old stories didn't actually have leprosy though. It was thought to have arrived around the 3rd century BCE to the Mediterranean. The lepers before that were an assortment of other skin diseases, or in some cases (like 2 Kings 5:27), likely some sort of genetic albinism.
ostentatiousbro547 赞2022/2/3
BCG vaccine has varying amount of protection and a handful of leprosy specific vaccine is also still in the works. It is mostly early detection and antibiotic treatment to prevent this.
carolethechiropodist192 赞2022/2/3
i did read somewhere, that due to leprosy in the past, most Europeans are actually immune to leprosy. it is only weakly transmissible. So the low resistance of these people is probably the cause of this extreme case.
wollphilie225 赞2022/2/3
I just read an article about leprosy in Norway, where leprosy was a real public health concern in the 18th century while it had mostly died out in the rest of Europe. 95% of all humans are immune to leprosy, but the 5% that aren't, are often concentrated geographically, such as along the west coast of Norway back in the day, or in specific regions of India today.
Redplushie20 赞2022/2/3
I would love to read that article!
wollphilie49 赞2022/2/3
I'd love to link it to you, but it's in a Norwegian anthology on medical history in Norway, called "Blod og bein: Lidelse, lindring og behandling i norsk medisinhistorie". The article on leprosy is by Bjørn Godøy.

I don’t know about that but our « local celebrity » here in Belgium and catholic saint [Father Damien, Saint of Molokai](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_Damien) died of leprosis after staying with the leperous in Hawaï
FlatSoda729 赞2022/2/3

Yallneedjesuschrist29 赞2022/2/4
The prognosis for lepra lepromatosa (this picture) is much worse than for lepra tuberculoides, because it affects the inner organs. Especially the liver, spleen and kidneys. The life expectancy is limited.
Kaio_34 赞2022/2/4
so you're telling me that what we're seeing happen to their faces.. ..is also happening on their groin, butt, and armpits?
Sharks_Ala_Pierre49 赞2022/2/4
Everywhere, yes. The organs, too. It effects the outer parts of the body the most, though, since they are more exposed and can be mechanically removed, due to the structure of the tissue failing.
lundyforlife2266 赞2022/2/3

chn4165 赞2022/2/3
More likely that they were living in a leper colony at this point, though I'm not sure how common those were in Asia
throwaway_236734103 赞2022/2/3
Pretty common, lepers were ostracized.
hahayeahimfinehaha116 赞2022/2/3
And, looking at this, it's understandable why. It was an incurable (at the time) and poorly understood contagious disease that caused results like this. No wonder people did all they could to avoid lepers and cast them out so the infection didn't spread. It's tragic and not fair or just at all for the poor victims, but what would have been a better way?

For those of you who don't know, this is what it really looks like in advanced stages. What happens is that there is no feeling in the affected areas. The nerves have died and eventually the bacterium destroys the flesh, bone, and muscles. It is painless. Sadly this is now easily treated, but even today there are still patients who are disfigured because they were not able to get medical help. You can donate to these charities.
