This was a coup, not a crisis. Yeltsin made army units shot on the parliament. Yeltsin consulted on all his steps Bill Clinton and received later money for the election campaign.
Livingit123399 赞2021/8/11
It pretty much was a coup, once the parliament was destroyed Russia began a transition to a full Presidential Republic where excessive power was given to the leader at expense of the legislature. With Yeltsin's new Presidential powers he began curbing media freedom immediately as punishment for the "unfair" coverage of the event. Also journalists started to randomly die again, probably because of the increased power he gave to the Oligarchs.
This_Is_The_End170 赞2021/8/11
> Also journalists started to randomly die again. And the media in the west blamed the mobsters. Lol

Morritz17 赞2021/8/11
Wow I have never heard of this side of the yeltsin years, people are always going on about the selling out of the country but I had never heard of this clear subversion of the democratic process.
TheWinks25 赞2021/8/11
You mean the parliament that held a national referendum then ignored the results when they came back unfavorably? Then they started doing lots of other questionably legal things like declaring the annexation of Sevastopol.
Karl-AnthonyMarx35 赞2021/8/11
And most Americans have no idea. So frustrating to see the country of Russia portrayed as this boogeyman by elected officials and the media with nary a word on the events that set it on its current trajectory. To read not-veiled-at-all racist creeds about how untrustworthy the Russians are and how America would never do anything like that. The way the American empire marches on can just be so grim. What good is our democracy if the empire is non-negotiable, supported by both major parties and not even acknowledged by most of the populace? Tens of million Russian lives forever altered for the worse so some western executive could post a nice quarter.

Why Stalin?
TheCesar141,054 赞2021/8/11
From what I know a lot of old people in Russia seem to think fondly about Stalin. To them the Stalin regime represents the glory days of the Soviet Union.
XenuIsTheSavior899 赞2021/8/11
I think historical figures who succesfuly led their countries in a defensive war generally always remain popular regardless of everything else they may have done.
[已删除]697 赞2021/8/11
Reminds me of that one quote from Vladimir Putin. “Whoever does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain.”
JQA1515670 赞2021/8/11
Bringing the Soviet Union back would be very problematic for Vlad and his rich oligarch friends.

NEEDZMOAR_62 赞2021/8/12
Theres a story of how bourgeoise russian nationalism choose Stalin as the leader they tried to incorporate into their mythology from the USSR partly because the propaganda against Stalin can be turned on its head and used to promote Russian nationalism and partly becauseLenin is just too fucking radical and its impossible to twist his words into anything but the death of the russian oligarchs. The story also goes that Putin is seriously uncomfortable having Lenins old mausoleum so close to him, hes tried several times to move it where it doesnt remind people of other times but its one of the things he cannot get through.
Unlucky-Reality-883180 赞2021/8/12
When you're so incredibly based your century old corpse strikes fear into the heart of one of the most powerful men on the planet. Clearly, the most based man in history.

I don't think America has ever fully processed the collapse of the USSR. Like... we acknowledge that it has collapsed but every single time we portray Russia in the media, it's in the soviet era, we call Putin a communist and overall, we act like the cold war is still going on albeit at a significantly softer degree.

Poglosaurus112 赞2021/8/11
The soviet union also had a class of people that didn't answer to the same rule as the normal people. The current oligarch all came from this elite. The system is not linked to the ideology of the government but to the very hierarchical and authoritarian nature of the Russian society.
JQA151576 赞2021/8/11
That’s something that existed in Russia before the USSR and now exists after the USSR, yet we’ve been told to blame it on ‘communism.’
vodkaandponies15 赞2021/8/12
I think it more demonstrates that the USSR failed to live up to its rhetoric and ideals.
br0b1wan19 赞2021/8/11
Vladdy wants the Soviet Union back without the ideology.
JQA151520 赞2021/8/11
I mean that’s basically what it is now. It didn’t become democratic it just became capitalist and more people live in poverty.

I binged every single one of this guy's videos during quarantine in 2019. It's a fascinating look into the post-Soviet world of Eastern Europe/Russia. Very crazy how much of a time capsule some of the more obscure places he goes to are. Also, it was surprising to see how much genuine humanity exists in these locations that were seemingly left in the dust by modernization. The people are extremely resilient, and friendly!
Jacksuit18 赞2021/8/12
...and then you find out he used to be a frequent user on sexpat forums and considers himself a "trailblazer" who paves way for other sex tourists into places where "white god complex" (his own words) is still prevalent. Yikes.

bob_fossill68 赞2021/8/11
To understand why Stalin is still revered by many in Russia today you just have to think of their famous saying about him: "Stalin found Russia with a wooden plough and left her with a nuclear bomb"
[已删除]125 赞2021/8/11

Same reason why we have anti-vaxers. People forget how bad things were in the past and reminisce about the "good old times"
modomario149 赞2021/8/11
Alternatively. Some people had it bad some saw improvement. Idk why it seems so unthinkable that someone who's family might've been among those basically equivalent to serfs before the revolution benefited from the rapid industrialisation and happened to not see the oppression or instances where conditions worsened back then but did experience them when under Yeltsin Russia faced a serious decline in GDP and other metrics. Additionally as someone else mentioned a concentration of power, dismantling of economy by oligarchs and crackdown on journalists. Something people might not have cared as much about under stalin or lenin given that didn't really depart much from what was there before.
alexlucas00670 赞2021/8/11
In the 90s everything turned to shit. The whole union was crumbling, criminals took over all businesses, they were at the head of the state, Yeltsin was a puppet that was controlled by the oligarchs trying to get a bigger slice of that tasty pie. Whoever got to play tennis with that drunken bastard could get rich overnight. Qualified engineers had to beg on the streets, or, as my father did, work as a salesman selling imported chocolate bars and trying to make a living since he didn't receive his salary for over half a year straight. With what happened in the early 90s gulag wasn't all that bad in comparison.
Other_World52 赞2021/8/11
>Qualified engineers had to beg on the streets, or, as my father did, work as a salesman selling imported chocolate bars and trying to make a living That's funny cause I remember when i had to walk dogs to make a living, because I couldn't find work in the field I studied for. This was during one of the three capitalism-created recessions in my adult life.

Because Stalin's age was highest growing of our power: from agriculture regional weak country to world's superpower. This is main reason why West so hate his name.
CanuckPanda63 赞2021/8/11
Well, we're taught mostly about the Holodomor genocides, the Gulags and political repression, and the unbending iron fortitude required to fight so brutally in World War II. We don't get the context of Russian history sort of... always being genocidal and repressive. The West doesn't learn about Tsarist Siberian exiles, the displacement of native Siberian populations, Russification across the Empire, and so forth. Stalin was a bloody dictator, but so are the vast majority of Russian leaders.
MagicWishMonkey36 赞2021/8/11
I think it’s more because of the tens of millions of people he murdered, more than anything else.
whenthewhenthesus275 赞2021/8/11
Mass privatization led to thousands of people losing their jobs and everyday goods became expensive not to mention the millions of Russians and Ukrainians who found themselves in new countries like in Kazakhstan and georgia
Soft_Shirt3410253 赞2021/8/11
In those days there was a real fascist coup, and not just a "constitutional crisis". The oligarchs took power. And West, obviously, supported this fascists.
kwonza131 赞2021/8/11
West kept supporting far right parties and politicians in Russia for decades and then started crying “wolf!” when Russia started to do the same in Europe and US. Just like when US was hacking everyone and when it got hacked back suddenly Russia and China are are threat to Internet. The crazy part for me is people in US who claim to be “liberal” but still support that shit when it comes from blue party and not from red.
thugangsta62 赞2021/8/11
> The crazy part for me is people in US who claim to be “liberal” but still support that shit when it comes from blue party and not from red. Look at China hatred. I've had self described 'liberal' friends tell me that China should be nuked.

[已删除]45 赞2021/8/11
I guess that makes killing a million russians during the largest drop in life expectancy during peace time okay then. I suppose youd be okay with the Soviets brutalising Italy in 1948 cause the CIA rigged their election then and funded fascist death squads then?
chrmanyaki52 赞2021/8/11
Russia in the 90s was worse in every sense and it never got better. You’ve got to be insanely naive or just simply have no clue what you’re talking about to say something this ignorant.
[已删除]38 赞2021/8/11
I was speaking about countries of the Eastern Bloc not Russia itself
chrmanyaki19 赞2021/8/11
Which ones? There’s a MASSIVE difference from country to country and frankly anyone talking about “the eastern bloc” in this context likely has no clue what they’re talking about but maybe you’ll prove me wrong. A large amount of places are definitely worse off under the western imperialist boot versus the Soviet boot.
[已删除]25 赞2021/8/11
As far as I'm concerned in all the Eastern Bloc countries the communist parties are either banned or (like KSČM in my country for example) the communist parties get trashed every single election. You keep claiming I have no clue what I'm talking about yet you haven't provided a single example of a former eastern bloc country where the majority would like to go back to USSR
_-null-_21 赞2021/8/11

The_Dankinator20 赞2021/8/11
Yeltsin's government was tyrannical. He came to power through a coup where he ordered the military to fire upon their parliament, dissolved the parliament, and then installed himself as president. He had loads of journalists who opposed his reign murdered. His administration invaded Chechnya in the First Chechen War, where 27,000 civilians were killed in the Battle of Grozny.
