It's essentially the same line of thinking, but the change, or something new, is people crowd sourcing a Dungeon and Dragons type of role playing semi-secular religion in real time using the internet. I have a few friends who are obsessed with Qanon or are Qanon adjacent, and they think they are discussing politics, but they sound like complete religious nuts.

I maintain that the core of Trump's followers are only a heart attack away from turning into a fully fledged religion, complete with "HE will return when we need him most".

Bryan has been misunderstood as a result of the play. He was actually fairly progressive. He opposed entry into the world war and favored giving the vote to women. > Bryan, like many religious conservatives, was not really opposed to the concept of Darwinism and evolution at the time it first came up in the late 19th century. Instead it was the idea of Social Darwinism, the survival of the fittest, that sounded the alarm with Bryan and many others.
The_0range_Menace502 赞2021/7/7
Survival of the fittest is constantly misunderstood to mean survival of the toughest. It means survival of the organism best adapted to the environment.
even more precisely the organism (but really the gene) that is best able to replicate itself in the environment, which often results in traits mutually beneficial to many individual organisms, like cooperation.
This was famously elaborated on in Richard Dawkins' book "The Selfish Gene". The term used for cooperation is altruism.
I'd like to borrow this thread to point out that "The Selfish Gene" is NOT about a gene for selfishness. This error is made too often. The individual gene is the driver of evolution, and each gene must maximize its own replication or perish. All of the complex systems, structures, and behaviors arise from this basic idea. There is no gene for selfishness, but all genes are 'selfish.'
AllOne_Word15 赞2021/7/7
I had the audio book of this. The introduction is Dawkins describing at length what you just said, that it's the Selfish *Gene* (i.e. genes are selfish) and not the *Selfish* Gene (i.e. a gene for selfishness). He goes into quite some detail. This is immediately followed by some other dude announcing the title and blithely calling it The *Selfish* Gene. Nice work.
Equality_Rocks_71437 赞2021/7/7
Dawkins even coined the word 'meme' in this book by combining 'mimema' (Greek for 'imitated') and 'gene'.
Yes! Most people that use memes every day don't know that Dawkins came up with the word.

I wonder if the connotation of “fit” has changed over time (I do *not* want that to be a pun about “evolving”). If you asked people today what it means to be “fit”, they might answer “healthy” or “strong”. Maybe back in the day they would think more “puzzle piece” which fits the context better (and another damn accidental pun I hate this shit).
Maybe, but the phrase 'survival of the fittest' is nonsensical in evolutionary theory. Darwin did not coin it, he did not like it, and he argued against it and its accompanying ideas. A better, but still not entirely accurate, phrase would be 'survival of everything that can, for as long as they can.'
It's unfortunate that "survival of the fittest" is spread as the main thrust of Darwin's work. A better framing might be "hakuna mutata"

I have a co-worker who takes the bible literally....and think humans back in the old testament literally lived to be 300-900 yrs old. Anyway, I told him the universe is 13 billion years old according to scientists calculations. And the the earth is roughly 3 billion yrs old...He said that the earth is only 6 thousand years old because the bible says so or whatever, then I said that carbon dating has proved it to be more than that...He scoffed and said that carbon dating is very flawed and not accurate...So I asked him that what in the bible makes IT so fucking accurate, his reply was, the bible doesnt lie...then I went into how ppl who spent their entire careers in science were all just lying and against the bible...his reply was, I trust the bible...from then on I was like, "ok you brainwashed imbecile, Ill literally never want to talk to you again"

The best question to ask there is: where did the wives of Cain and Able come from? If Adam and Eve were the first two humans specifically created by God and they had two sons… well… and where did all the people come from which Cain encountered after being punished with the mark? I know the true believers will give tortuous answers and exegetical nonsense but it’s still fun to let them sweat on these (and other) things in the Bible.

My Bible freak coworker has an answer to that, he said that they didn't record the near by tribes, to which I said to him, "wait, don't you take the Bible literally "?? He went on some random shit about God not wanting that in the Bible.. So I guess God was playing the Sims or some shit when he made us?? Ugh I apologize, my stupid auto correct keep capitalizing the words Bible and God....I would never

What’s critical race theory?
CRT is a influential but not widely accepted legal theory which argues that since laws which are not obviously racist on their face often end up resulting it racist outcomes due to structural racism, Legal decisions should be made in a way that results in racially equitable outcomes rather than through strictly textual interpretations. However the term has also been coopted by conservatives as a scare phrase that encompasses all teachings of structural racism, inherent bias, and any implication that racism was involved in the founding of America.

The only thing that struck me as “staged” was I recall reading he was a substitute teacher and wasn’t totally sure he’d ever taught evolution when first approached. He figured he had when it was pointed out evolution was in the textbook the school used.

CRT was established as a movement in the 70’s as well. Funny how it’s been around for half a century, but is only now threatening the very fabric of society. I’m only surprised it took so long for it to be turned into a pillar of the angertainment industry. Those marketing wizards really missed a goldmine. Better late than never, I suppose.

It's interesting to see how the Scopes Trial has come to be understood all these years later. At the time, a strong contingent on the anti Scopes/evolution were social progressives who (imo justifiably) believed that Darwinian evolution would be twisted and bastardized to support white supremacy and eugenics. It's worth noting that the Trial was just 6 years after one of the most horrific summers of pogroms against Black people (Red Summer of 1919) and that eugenicist views and practices were in full swing. Northern Black clergy were terrified that the schools (which were usually deeply white supremacist) would give justification for Black sterilization - or worse. Likewise, even poor whites from backwards places in the South or Midwest understood that evolution could be used to justify sterilizing them or their loved ones. Their fears weren't exactly groundless. For instance, California at the time developed a plan to sterilize the "bottom" 10% of the state population. None of this is to say teaching evolution is wrong, but that those supporting Scopes weren't quite as forward looking as we'd initially think, and conversely, those opposing him weren't as backwards.

This is a really important to note! In a weird way, the anti-evolution side were the good guys in this case because Darwinian evolution was being used to support a number of morally disgusting, Hitlery things, which was in large part what the anti-evolutions were objecting to.

This bothers me so much! I had a college psychology teacher teach creationism instead of evolution last year. First day I thought we might be getting close to a situation like that based on how he was talking about our lesson plans, so I literally asked “do we need to worry about you censoring lessons? Or will you teach from the book?” Happened not far from where this picture was taken. Fuck that educator in particular

As a kid I was thoroughly fascinated by the Scopes trial. I have some family from there, and used to spend Saturdays in Dayton with the courthouse in view. I have a desk from the room Scopes stayed in at my great-aunt's boarding house. Rhea County (where Dayton is) tried to ban gay people from living there about a decade ago, and there's also Bryan College - verrrry conservative Christian college, often making news for discriminating, as one might suspect. I don't spend time at all in Dayton anymore 🙄

I live in Tennessee, when evolution was taught in school about half the class threatened the teacher, argued with everything because of perceived contradictions with the religion, and refused to learn or participate in any of it. This ignorance still exists here sadly, there is a brand of “Christian” in most of the south that is vehemently opposed to anything that wasn’t taught(indoctrinated) to them at what they call churches but are really gathering spots for hypocrites who have perverted their own religion so they never have to think or change or question their own actions.

Get ready. If GQP has their way, that law will be reinstated. Dogma over reality again.

Not even 100 years ago. That's crazy. Somehow the older I get, the closer the time before me feels.
