you should check out the WWII museum in new orelans. IIRC they have a section dedicated to propaganda on both sides.

Oh man, my best friend and I having been planning a trip there for the last few years. Hoping to finally go come March or April and then we intend on heading down to see the Lexington so I can't wait. Gonna be one hell of a trip.
If you’re a history buff, make sure you give yourself at least a couple days to get through the WWII museum. I had to rush through it in 1 day and want to go back to really be able to soak it in. There is SOOO much to see there.
Yea my dad has been and said you'd need at least a few days, if not more, so I believe we are planning at least 3 days in New Orleans just to spend at the museum. Wanna try and hit the Confederate Memorial Hall Museum as well but that will probably have to be reserved for another trip in the future. I just hope covid is a bit better under control and we are able to go.
As a New Orleanian who lives 10 blocks from the museum and originally moved to NOLA way-back-when bc the WWII Museum was going to be one of my clients; this warms the hell out of my heart. What a lovely conversation to stumble on. You’re getting tons of great advice here. Once upon a time it would take a day to get through, now at least 4 at a fast pace. I think if you did the absolute must-see stuff you could do it in 2 days. I just know if you’re a history buff in New Orleans, there’s ALOT to do. The Confederate Museum is maybe worth a quick stop because the collection is impressive and it’s a block from the WW2 Museum, but as a southerner who had ancestors who were traitors that fought in the Confederacy, there was too much noble “lost cause” propaganda bs that made me ill. I think many of the Plantations outside of town actually give a much more honest framing. Things are pretty fucked here right now and we’re about to go back into lockdown. I advise anyone coming for the first time to hold off until after the pandemic is over. Feel free to reach out. And just to confirm, yes Bearcat is the bomb and once you do one obligatory hour on bourbon (deep soul cringe) GTFO and go see all the infinitely better places on Frenchman, in the LGD, Bywater, Marigny, Uptown. Edit: typos
You should check out the pro Chinese/russian propaganda. Lots of handsome chinese and russian men, happily embracing each other.

This is so odd. It's almost childish. While Western propaganda was showing horrible bucktooth caricatures trying to take over the world, the Japanese are like "Winston smells like poo!".
>the Japanese are like "Winston smells like poo!". You must've missed the part where they told civilians about Marine "devils raping and devouring Japanese women and children", resulting in people jumping to their deaths on Saipan.
Yeah I read a lot of the propaganda they gave to soldiers about the US Marines was designed to make them sound dishonourable, for example that they were recruited from prisons etc. and so not fit "warrior" material and inferior to Japanese troops.
Well, U.S. Soldiers *were* sometimes give the option of either going to prison or joining the military, and penal battalions were a thing in some militaries, but it was definitely inaccurate for them to depict *all* American troops like that.
I never disputed the rapes, but the eating of women and children is somewhat suspect.

Somewhat? That definitely did not happen. The Japanese however ate pow’s many times during the war and its extensively documented
Johannes_P53 赞2021/1/5
>The Japanese however ate pow’s many times during the war and its extensively documented Even by their own regulations, which merely banned eating corpses of other Japanese troops.
Well that and the rape. They still raped. To this day actually.

The main issue with U.S. soldiers stationed in bases inside foreign countries is that they rarely paid for eventual crimes, they just get sent back to the USA

Jumping to their deaths, holding grenades to their stomaches or heads, stabbing themselves, poisoning themselves... Nobody knows how many killed themselves or were forced to kill themselves but there are plenty of firsthand accounts of people who were there. Saipan's outcome played a huge part in the US's choice to drop the nukes on them.
Wow, so the Japanese are just shit at propaganda then. It's either too little and therefore laughable OR it's too much and it results literally in the deaths of their own citizens...
I mean they managed to convince there own people to die for the emperor. Soldiers would slam plans into ships and do banzai charges, if anything they where pretty good at dehumanizing the enemy.
Many of those kawaikazee pilots were not doing so voluntarily, they were forced to and these issues cut a lot deeper than propaganda because Japan is a society built on the concepts of honor and hierarchy. A lot of what you saw is just the danger of acceptance of authority and nationalism.
There was a very different culture in Japan vs the western world which contributed to this, a lot of it dating back to the samurai days. It's not that they sucked at propaganda, but their baseline and end goals were different than ours.
Can't conclude that based on one example. The allies had plenty of silly/childish [propaganda](). And the Japanese had plenty nasty [propaganda](). Edit: picture 2 was made by Japan and dropped in India
Unless the test was changed, that's not Japanese. Might be Sanskrit? Edit: I reverse image searched and found that it was made by Japan, and dropped in India during WWII.
The top sections are Hindi, the bottom is Bengali. It would be funny as hell if they made a Sanskrit one and later realized that almost no one would have any idea what it said.
This is just a hunch, but I think this is playing on the fact that westerners tend to have the gene that makes their sweat smelly. WC is obviously the face of the message in the propaganda but I think it is more generally just isolating/vilifying the smelly opposition in the war. I have nothing to back this up.
That foreigners stink is a near universal insult about people different than oneself. There are certain evergreen xenophobic insults, like that whichever group you want to disparage is dirty, promiscuous, stupid, smelly, poor, unkempt, a liar, feminine (for men), masculine (for women), and immoral. It doesn't have to have any ultimate truth or genetic backing to it, though given how much time is spent trying to show that X or Y group has inferior genes in some way, people find genetic explanations to be more appealing. That's a long way of saying that yeah, there is that gene thing about smell, but they didn't know about it back then and this is just standard propaganda and doesn't have to have any origins in a literal fact.
I remember reading in a book about the Vietnam war written by an American special forces soldier that Americans smelled different because their diet was different. Supposedly a lot of the hardcore special forces guys ate like a native because otherwise north Vietnamese patrols would smell them when they were doing behind the lines patrols
I read similar accounts. And they would avoid washing with soap because the smell of soap, undetectable to the western nose, carried across the jungle like you dumped a bottle of aftershave all over yourself.
Exactly. If I remember right they used something called a "thai deoderant stone" or something, which I think was some kind of natural mineral salt deodorant- again because it was something the locals used
Can confirm, japanese and koreans first referred to westerns as cheese people, they still think most westerns smell like bad cheese. Source- half korean and have no body odor.
I saw a video by an American guy who lives in Japan and speaks fluent Japanese. He said that people occasionally assume he can’t understand them and use the phrase 'butter reeker' about him, which comes from the idea that western people smell of rancid butter. He told a story about an air stewardess apologising to a Japanese guy sitting next to him on a plane for having to sit next to a butter reeker.
>butter reeker "Bata-kusai" is the phrase (literally stinking of butter)
>黄油臭
这个词的日语是“Bata-kusai”(字面意思就是浑身散发着黄油恶臭)。

German WW2 propaganda: „ZEY WILL RAPE YOUR CORPSE,YOUR CHILD,WIFE AND GRANDMOTHER IF YOU DONT FIGHT ZEM TO ZE DEATH FOR ZE VATERLAND Japanese WW2 propaganda: „ew stinky winky boi“
German Propaganda was violent and scary for two reasons. 1. It worked so well against them in WW1 and 2. They did *horrible* things in the Eastern Front and they knew it was coming home. Japanese propaganda was mostly condescending and stereotypical, much like US propaganda. Japanese felt/feel the same way about Japan that protestant Americans feel about America or Jews and Jerusalem. That it is a land chosen by divinity and set apart for a special people. But they had much more "fight to the death" stuff when they started to lose.
While I am not able to tell if it was common knowledge, a quick review of instances in older books scanned by Google shows at least one example of WC being used repeatedly in a Japanese text (日本から日本へ) to refer to a bathroom without explanation for the reader as far back as 1921.

As far as I know western trading has happened in Japan for a long time and they’re somewhat familiar with the Latin alphabet.

I think a lot of people in this thread are unfamiliar with the abbreviation W.C. As an american, I was too until I moved to China. It stands for water closet (toilet).
它代表 water closet(厕所)。
As an American kid, the first times I heard “water closet,” I assumed it was literally a closet for water. Like, a janitors closet, but instead of a small closet for mops and cleaning supplies, it was a small closet with just a sink or just a water fountain inside. I was confused as to why they would have a dedicated closet just for a sink or water fountain, but brushed it off as “I guess that’s just how they do it there...” I didn’t make the full connection until I was watching some show or movie where a Brit was in America, asked where the water closet was, and the American was like “the what?... Ooh, you mean the *bathroom*?”
British: we must defeat the axis forces if we are to survive, god save the queen! Japanese: u smell bad

It’s weird to see this, almost cute/funny. But then when you look at how monstrous they were in war with POW’s and Unit 731 you’d think their propaganda would be much more severe.
Given that Japan was only at war with Great Britain for the last three weeks of 1941, this is likely pre-war propaganda designed to stir up anti-British sentiment without being overtly hostile.
if we're being honest, Winnie probably did have a pretty strong stench of scotch on him at all times
The Japanese think Caucasians have a distinct smell, which they call butter smell. Until the seventies, most Japanese had never smelled butter and thought it was gross.
Japan is crazy somehow barely any of their war criminals got imprisoned even though they did equal or worse things to the nazis. Wanna throw up look up the Nanking massacre.
I find war propaganda so interesting. When you look at old stuff it's not as complex or intelligent as you're expecting, but it worked. But yeah, Churchill probably did stink didn't he
lol. Meanwhile he gave GB a backbone in their solo stand against the Nazi machine.

A friend of mine is Japanese. He’s the most racist motherfucker I’ve ever met. He says caucasians smell terrible—like fat and butter. And he’s said some much worse things about Chinese people. I’m guessing this propaganda isn’t a pun on water closets, so much as it’s a racist insult to westerners. Kinda like American propaganda depicting Japanese people as squinty eyed bucktoothed morons.
