What I find really interesting is that she was also trusted with Mercury's ashes after he was cremated, and is said to have secretly spread them in a location that she will never reveal. So Freddy's final resting place will be a secret forever. There's something poetic about that.

[已删除]23 赞2020/12/4
She spread them in a place he had chosen and discussed with her beforehand. Not his parents, sister, bandmates or any other friends were told. Freddy didn't want to have his loved ones visiting him at a grave where any obsessed fans might have gone the route of grave robbing and he didn't want them to go through that either. The relationship between Mary and Freddy, to me, is a perfect example of why I believe that a person's soulmate isn't always their romantic partner. I believe that soulmates are people who know one another inside and out, have a bond of trust, never a secret between them and a shared ability to know the other person as well as they know themselves. I also believe that soulmates can exist between more than just two individuals. It's not uncommon for friends to have a trio My(F 35) soulmate (F who was 9 months older than me, nearly to the day) passed just over 8 years ago. She was my best friend, my other half. She had this uncanny ability, even through text messaging, to know exactly what I needed at any given moment. What I mean is, if I had something nagging at me but hadn't figured out what I wanted to say, if anything, or what exactly was bothering me in the first place; whether I was feeling giddy over news I wanted to share but was choosing to hold back until I got to hear how her kids were doing and updates on what things they were into at any particular point; if I was holding back grief while being sure my texts were upbeat and cheerful so no one knew, she did. She would recognize something in my voice during calls but in texts when it's usually easy to play something off, she just knew and more importantly, she knew exactly what I needed from her as the best friend. She would just recognize without me saying a word, whether I needed advice or simply for her to listen, whether I was in need of a tough love conversation or even lecture (that last one being extremely rare and usually brief lol). Anyhow, I never understood how she just knew. I always *felt like* I was doing the same for her but we never actually talked about it specifically. Freddie and Mary's relationship reminds of my friend and myself, and while I have lost plenty of loved ones who were often far too young and died tragically in my life. When my time comes, however even if it's just endless nothingness, it is my deepest hope that she is the first person, or only if that's the case. I believe that Mary probably feels the same way about Freddy.

I have a female cousin who lived next door to an elderly gay couple. She fed their cats, when they traveled. When they died, they left her their house. It was worth considerably less than Mercury's house, but was much more than she expected. Especially considering that what she had done was pretty small.
xclame227 赞2020/12/4
All that just for feeding their cat (and I assume just being friends with them)? That's awesome and I would like to think that if i was in that position and I didn't have close family/friends to leave my stuff to I would also leave my stuff for the person that took care of my cat. Cats are amazing and I like anyone that treats them well.
bedroom_fascist220 赞2020/12/4
True story: I will have a decent sized estate. One of my coworkers was an absolute prince when asked to look after our cats last year. I don't have kids, and immediately started thinking about how to write him into my will. He has no idea.
Tallguystillhere57 赞2020/12/4
When my family went on a vacation ***years ago***, we had asked our neighbour if they could watch our brothe pair of cats. When we came home, they admitted that they had only 'checked up' on them and made sure they were fed, had water, and a cleaned out litter box. The basics. What we didn't expect was that the neighbour's younger brother Eric would be passed out on the couch with the male cat asleep on top of him. Eric loved that cat just sooo much, he'd ask when we were going out of town again just so he could cat-sit. It was saddening for my family when the male cat finally died some eight years after that vacation, but it was sad telling Eric his favorite cat was gone.

I just saw a documentary the other day about a 23 year old straight man who pretended to be gay for a rich gay middle aged man. Everything went well for a bit. The gay guy bought this man an expensive car and a motocycle and other good stuff until the straight man got sick of having sex with him. He decided to murder him expecting that all the gay mans fortune will go to him and now he is serving life in prison.

I always figured that Freddie was bi, even if he had a strong preference for men. His relationship with Mary feels special. Like it doesn't seem that he was using her as a "beard" or was confused about his sexuality. He genuinely loved her, and despite everything else - the industry, the drugs, the sex, the relationships - it seems he never stopped loving her.
deathfire123149 赞2020/12/4
I think bi erasure is so prominent because it can even be prominent for bisexual people to convince themselves they are either straight or gay or that they should choose, when in reality, they shouldn't have to or feel pressured to.

PWNtimeJamboree123 赞2020/12/4
i love Elton John. Truly a wonderful person. I had the pleasure of meeting him before in a recording studio when I was a teenager. My dad is professional musician in Atlanta, where Elton lives, and as such has an acquainted relationship with him (cordial, when they see each other Elton knows who he is, asks how hes doing, how his kids are, etc.) Elton is everything he is portrayed to be and more. He'll sit down with anyone and carry on a conversation like theyre the only person in that room, and no one is more important than his current acquaintance. He was recording a single for a fundraiser, and they were recording session musicians. Elton was overseeing and helping produce. During the session, he was showing me what all the buttons on the board did, describing how back in the day, they recorded everything on tape and now it was all digital and how much easier it made it, etc. At one point, the engineer asked Elton if he was ready to wrap the session, to which replied "yes" but that the engineer could take a break while he chatted with me some more. Elton and I sat at this massive recording board while my dad sat on a couch for over an hour chatting about the Braves. I'll never forget that as long as I live.

Scyhaz120 赞2020/12/4
But what about the cats? WHO GOT HIS CATS?!?
notbob1959181 赞2020/12/4
I know his cats went to Mary but I did not verify the other details in this answer at quora.com: >Oscar, the ginger cat seen with Mercury in his last known photo, wandered away some time after his master’s death. Mary Austin inherited Garden Lodge, which had a total of five cats (not including Oscar). Two of the cats were then rehomed, as she found five cats to be too much. >Delilah, Freddie’s favorite, lived to be an estimated twenty years old which is very old but a possible age for a cat. Peter Freestone, Freddie’s personal assistant wrote of visiting Mary at Garden Lodge some time in the early 2000s. Delilah was very old and frail but remembered him and fell asleep on his lap for a good two hours. Mary buried her in Freddie’s beloved garden. >Mary did not leave the two rehomed cats at an animal shelter. Instead, they were given to friends/neighbors. One cat, Romeo was aggressive towards Delilah, Goliath and Miko (who was bonded to the siblings). Maybe he fought with Mary’s cats and she thought he would do better in a home with no other cats. In fact, the cats had eclectic origins. Delilah and her brother Goliath were strays housed at a veterinary clinic. Tiffany was a gift from Mary. At least two of the cats were purchased as kittens on impulse by Jim from a local pet shop from separate occasions (Jim couldn’t resist the adorable kittens in the shop’s window!). Mary was a cat lover too, after all, so I don’t think she disliked the cats. Based on how long Delilah lived she was probably well cared for by Mary.

Also also, it harder for men to be bi since (for some dumb reason) men’s masculinity is tied into their sexuality. So like, if you’re straight you’re 100% straight TM. And if you like men in any capacity... Must be gay then. There’s less wiggle room for bi guys and it’s stupid af. Meanwhile, it’s more accepting for women to be bi for several reasons. Women’s sexuality aren’t viewed as seriously. Women’s femininity aren’t reliant on their sexuality. Lesbianism is fetishized so it’s acceptable for straight women to play with other women. But yeah. It’s a bunch of bi erasure. Edit: To clarify one of my points, since people seem to be misunderstanding: People, predominantly men, fetishize lesbians. Example: Boyfriends who say they wouldn’t mind if their girlfriends cheated on them with a women. This is what I meant by “acceptable for straight women to play with other women”. I am not referring to bi women in this instance. And I was using this as one of my examples for why women are less pressured to “pick a side” like men are (see also: more women identify as bi than men. Sexuality for men is much more polarized than for women). My two points of evidence were: women’s sexuality isn’t taken seriously and lesbianism is fetishized.
[已删除]1,008 赞2020/12/4
I'd say bi women face the same amount of erasure as bi men, but in the opposite direction. Bisexual men = "actually gay and lying to themselves." Bisexual women = "actually straight, just going through a phase/looking for attention."
IdentifiableBurden400 赞2020/12/4
The takeaway is supposed to be that you're either a dominant male or you want one inside you. There's no other alternatives. ^^i ^^do ^^not ^^believe ^^this
EnjoySweeping142 赞2020/12/4
Also I might be getting this wrong because I'm not bi... but I have a few close bi friends. Most of my male friends who like men and women have slept with more men simply because... even today women in touch with their sexual desires are often looked down upon in society. So a bi guy might sleep with 5 times the men... as they do women even if they would actually prefer women slightly on the spectrum. From an outside perspective it might be hard to recognize a "bi" from someone who is gay simply because of the availability of men wanting to have sex. Likewise many bi women find it hard to not "appear straight" because of how easy it is by comparison to have sex with men.
tomathon2548 赞2020/12/4
Yeah I have straight guy friends who are ridiculously good looking, make lots of money, and actively pursue sex.....and even the most average of my gay friends would hear how often they're having sex and be like "those are rookie numbers my friend." Though I think it's at least partially biological and not just that society looks down on sexually active women. From my understanding in a lot of lesbian relationships they tend to dive headfirst into the relationship but also end up with "dead bedrooms" quite often. Whereas gay relationships are often the opposite where getting sex is supremely easy but finding another man that wants to be in a committed relationship is a bit harder.
[已删除]60 赞2020/12/4
Tove Lo touches on this in some of her lyrics. One song particular ("sweet disaster" I think) talks about how men don't have what she's looking for that night despite them trying to get her, but she also has to go get the woman herself as they presumably are not aggressively seeking her. Or something. Interesting points you all have made. Very enlightening.
TropicalDreams77112 赞2020/12/4
Maybe that's true now, but *not* back in the 80s/90s. If someone decided to tell everyone you were a dyke, it stuck and you were left wondering why people stopped talking to you. And then later on when you found out the one out lesbian in town (who no one talked to) had decided to "out" a few straight girls (for S & G's) you were left wondering why people decided to just believed it instead of just asking those few girls if it was true or give a heads up to what that one person was saying behind their backs (spoiler alert. It was because it was unacceptable to be bi/gay back then and anyone labeled became ostracized). While it has always been more difficult for guys, being a female bi/lesbian has only *recently* become acceptable.

It's actually not that - that's kind of a new thing. Freddie was never 'out' per se and in the 1970s and 1980s it was actually easier to admit to bisexuality than being gay. Sounds weird in 2020, but it's true. If both of his long-term partners (Jim Hutton and Mary Austin) say he was gay, frankly that's good enough for me, considering Freddie himself never actually said anything on the matter. (oh, except once when he said "I'm gay as a daffodil.")
CABGX477 赞2020/12/4
Exactly. I was gay in the 80s and it was definitely more acceptable to be bi. Both my best friend and I realized we were gay very early in our teens but we said we were bi because it was easier. It was taboo to be gay back then. Kids today don't understand. We were definitely not bi and definitely 100% gay.

notbob1959320 赞2020/12/4
I found a copy of Freddie's will and his will creates a trust fund that has a vesting date 50 years from his death and that is what was divided up in the percentages shown. The article might be wrong in stating that Mary gets his parents share. If I am reading the will correctly she only gets that share if his sister and his sisters children also die before the vesting date. In the mean time his parents share accrue to his sister or her children. As mentioned I think they are mixing present and past values. Freddie Mercury bought the house for £500,000 in cash from a member of the Hoare family early in 1980 so I think the $37 million is how much the home was worth in 2019 New Zealand dollars. I can't link to them directly because the spam filter in this sub deletes comments with links, but the following incomplete links, which can be copied and pasted to your browser, go to the nzherald.co.nz article and his will: nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/freddie-mercurys-ex-fiancee-set-for-huge-75m-windfall/ROXOQRU7UQ5ZVADPZ2KP2BLO4U/ taringa.net/+musica/testamento-de-freddie-mercury_i1g90

That was in the movie. Before he was successful he was in a relationship with his landlady, and called it off when he came out to himself. From what I read, I don’t think there was any bitterness between them after the fact. Perhaps the derision should be directed at a system that allows someone who literally works for a doctor to be unable to get medical treatment due to money.

That’s how STDs work bro
originalscent73166 赞2020/12/4
Jim Hutton died from lung cancer 19 years after Freddie’s death. Edit: more research... he also had HIV.
Cryp71c85 赞2020/12/4
HIV is the viral infection which - when it's progressed far enough, results in AIDS. I don't believe you can develop AIDS without first contracting HIV...

Yeah from what I can tell Jim was a very low profile guy. But i’m 19 and from the other side of the world so what do i know
This-Moment239 赞2020/12/4
Good point. Of course, staying low profile might not have been by choice, at the time, given the bigotry in the wider world. Half a million and the love of a superstar is still a lot to be thankful for, I guess. :) But I'll be extra thankful if my grandkids and their kids never deal with homophobia.

And a home and property in Ireland.

Love is weird dude. He very well felt something beyond sexual desire or even raw attraction for Austin that presumably he didn’t feel for the guy he was involved with (and who was taking care of him) when he died. It is sad, but I know several people who are married who probably would prefer to leave whatever they can to a lost or forgotten love than their spouse. But yeah, the disparity here is obviously massive. Ms. Austin was extremely special to him.
sillyfacsimile148 赞2020/12/4
Austin was with him when Freddie was a nobody. Jim was with him when he was a super star. I think that is a major component to why Freddie had so much affection for her. I've had successful friends who try to date people they knew before they became successful due to this complication.

I was thinking the same thing lol. Like sweet and all he took care of mary like that but he did have a life partner...
KungFugazi363 赞2020/12/4
Mary was his life partner sounds like.
Gisschace68 赞2020/12/4
There are clips of him saying ‘Mary is my common law wife’, she was exactly that person for Freddie
Rmlady121521,883 赞2020/12/4
She saw him for who he was and loved him. We need more people like her.

We literally have millions of people across the globe in relationships like this... it’s called friendship
xCOUNTxCHOCULITISx527 赞2020/12/4
Average redditors be like “what’s a *friendship?”*
smallbatchb119 赞2020/12/4
Hell I have basically the exact same friendship. Dated my best friend for quite a while and then she came out and now we're still best friends. You can still have amazing relationships and deeply care for each other even if you're not sleeping together.
no1kopite114 赞2020/12/4
Indeed it's called marriage for most people ;)
Rmlady12152230 赞2020/12/4
Not everyone has that.
CapsFTW111 赞2020/12/4
If you need a friend, I got ya. You don't even need to put me in your will, friends are awesome to have on their own.
nameafterbreaking29 赞2020/12/4
You'll need to put me in your will if you want summa this
Diplodocus1141,621 赞2020/12/4
I think theirs is a beautiful story. That they were best friends until the end. You can adore and care for someone despite not being in a sexual relationship.
GaiaMoore640 赞2020/12/4
My husband and I are exactly like this -- he's Mary Austin and I'm Freddie Mercury (just not rich D: ) I was deeply closeted my entire life, but two and half years into my marriage the dam burst and I had to face the fact that I'm very, very gay. But the emotional bond we have is so much more intimate than simply "still best friends". I've never been sexually or romantically attracted to him, but we just connect on a whole other plane. I've never experienced mutual *passion* with another person, but while we have been trying to date separately it's so incredibly difficult contemplating the possibility that at some point we will actually split up. He's just my person, I guess.
BillyGoatAl237 赞2020/12/4
That’s a beautiful but tricky situation. I wish you both the best.

You're incredibly lucky! For many they never find that person, male or female, romantic or not.

Numerhasit1,545 赞2020/12/4
He must have really loved her
Jack_Frost_Junior1,374 赞2020/12/4
He literally wrote a song called "Love of my life" about her.
TheDustOfMen482 赞2020/12/4
I always wondered whether it's written from her POV rather than his. Either way, I'm devastated by it every time and I've never even broken up with someone.
jessbird43 赞2020/12/4
that song absolutely cuts straight to my core

my first thought too lmao we are all connected.
Juggs_gotcha553 赞2020/12/4
Seems like every time I learn something new about him, Freddie Mercury sounds like an absolute treasure of a dude.
Robbie9657134 赞2020/12/4
You should watch the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. Rami Malek plays him great and it shows his relationship with her and what happened. I’m not sure how accurate everything is but it’s a great movie nonetheless
zenga_zenga183 赞2020/12/4
The movie is a great film, and malek puts in a truly remarkable performance. BUT, I wouldn't treat it as a historically accurate biography...
chockypocky5102 赞2020/12/4
Bohemian Rhapsody is such a great movie but the movie is REALLY inaccurate. Keep in mind it is a biopic, not a documentary. Rami Malek plays him soooo good tho.
Polyaatail345 赞2020/12/4
He loved her despite his sexual preferences and she loved him back. Beautiful.
sahmeiraa611 赞2020/12/4
I believe Mercury was actually bi, but just like now, bisexuality is hugely erased.
SmartestManOnEuropa323 赞2020/12/4
She looks like a mix of Courtney Love and Blondie (as someone pointed out, Debbie Harry).
Blame-runner186 赞2020/12/4
The singer in Blondie is named Debbie Harry
notmoleliza140 赞2020/12/4
are you saying the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish is not named Hootie?

>Mary Austin is a private individual, but in one of her rare interviews with the BBC, she stated that Freddie’s Will and his leaving the bulk of his wealth to her has caused deep and bitter resentment, not least among his former bandmates, the members of Queen. She also said that, “Freddie was very generous to them [his bandmates] in the last years of his life and I don’t think they embraced that generosity. I don’t think they appreciated or recognized what Freddie had left them. He left the band a quarter share of the last four albums – which he didn’t need to do. And I never hear from them. After Freddie died, they just wandered off Damn

I’m not one to get religious, but I hope he’s singing with all the angels in Heaven.
Lo1126890 赞2020/12/4
Someone tweeted after the Bohemian Rhapsody movie came out that anyone who had ever lost a cat could rest assured bc Freddie was taking care of all them in heaven. And I honestly felt better thinking about my Corporal Cuddles being gone.

RedKings102860 赞2020/12/4
Freddie genuinely loved her...
giveuptheghostbuster56 赞2020/12/4
I always kinda wondered if her oldest child was actually Freddie’s and they never said anything so the kid could grow up out of the spotlight
