A story in a book about the history of football in Brazil: armed robbers in Rio forced their way into Pele’s limo while it was stuck in traffic. They brandished their guns, but when they saw it was Pele, they apologized profusely and left
Garricha is very much a nationally famous and revered soccer player and pretty much on legend status, but Pelé is much more of a household name, that even people who don't care about soccer instantly recognizes.
I'm curious what the household knowledge of Ayrton Senna is in Brazil. I read that after his death the country was in a time of mourning for several days and millions attended his funeral proceedings.
Garrincha played on older times, although he played with Pelé on 58 and 62... But Id say Garrincha was more like a 50s guys, while Pelé was 60s and 70s guy. That means Garrincha has little video records of him. While Pelé got the TV boom here in Brazil(even still, he didnt have a lot of games recorded)... But some older people who saw them playing say that Garrincha was just as good or maybe better than Pelé. And we have almost nothing to prove, just these older people words... Add the fact that Pelé had way more charisma and Garrincha by the end of his career had a lot of alcohool problems... so TV, media and etc chose Pelé to be the "superstar"... But, like I said, people who saw them both playing, say they kinda are on the same level.
This is certainly true from the perspective of some people who saw them both play at the same time, because while Pele was King, Garrincha was the Joy of the People. There is a saying that goes "While Pele made stadiums silent (out of fascination) , Garrincha made burst into laughter" So there is some truth in that statement, Garrincha is definetly revered. However, Pele transcend his time and for a reason, he was the athlete of the century and won three world cups.So while any kid knows Pele , Garrincha is a bit less mainstream and very attached to that comparison to Pelé that used to be made.
Brazilian here, we have lots of football idols and different people have their personal favorites. Depends on what you consider the best. Garrincha was a legendary dribbler, and many consider that the criteria on which they base their legendary status on. But Pelé is undoubtedly the most famous around the world, and rightfully so. In conclusion, I’m not crazy into football and had to look all of this up, so definitely don’t take anything I said as a fact.
There is also a story of Pele driving his own car in his home town of Santos, Brazil. He got robbed and they took his chain. The robber recognized him and apologized profusely before running away with his chain. I wonder if these are different stories or versions of the same one
So much style in this one photo it should be illegal.

Greatness. Unaffected. His entire being says: “You too can do it.”

✅Coolest. ❌Entire continent. ✅Entire world. Deservedly so. He was a perfect counterpart to Muhammad Ali; some will say greater, others will say lesser. Generous, loving & respectful of the fans. An absolute star. A person who symbolized the hope of the possible for many.
Not really. Pelé has said many dumb things in the past, and has sided with the rich and powerful. Many people feel like Romario when he said "Pelé calado é um poeta". Meaning "Pelé is a poet with its mouth shut".

there will never be another as cool as Pele.

To be fair, you can only catch the Brazilian sky and put it on a shirt once.

Pele’s autobiography says “the team was so good that the coach’s tactic was ‘just play football’ and it worked”

So that's what we've England has been doing wrong all these years.

Makes sense. They had so many creators on the field, unfair!
I was living in Peru at that time, and the local sentiment was "we ONLY lost 4-2"...
Dude that’s beautiful. You’ve been around for Pele, Best, Maradona and still around for modern magicians like Messi and Ronaldo. Got to see legends like Brazilian Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Gazza, Scholes, etc along the way.
In the sports world, I think that there are only 3 players that ascended way beyond their sport due to how great they were. They are known world wide, but most people that know of them have never seen them play. Yet still know of them from the legend of their greatness. They are Pele, Michael Jordan and Mohammed Ali.
True to some extent. The largest audience of F1 worldwide is in Brazil

I'd argue Michael Schumacher is by far the better known name

Sorry, but I have no clue who this is. I've absolutely heard of and idolize the first three.

Pele is king of the soccer field. To be king of your kitchen, use Crestfield Wax Paper.

He did adverts for boner pills in the UK back a bit. The funny thing is the exact pitch - if you need them, take our boner pills, "I would". Unspoken follow-up: 'I *would* but I have no need! I am Pele, hard like tree'.
Halfback passes to Center. Back to the Wing. Back to Center. Holds it.......holds it. Holds it.

>Halfback passes to Center. Back to the Wing. Back to Center. Holds it.......holds it. Holds it. Halfback passes to Center! Back to wing! Back to Center! Center holds it! Holds it!?!?! HOLDS IT!?!?!!??!?!?!?!
I think that car may be to do with his 1000th goal. He received a few cars as prizes over his career. This year he recently turned 80. The trousers and belt are awesome. The shirt is a bit over the top, though. But that's fine, no one would question Pele I guess.
This looks like a picture from a men's clothing catalog. Sports stars didn't get the crazy money back then and doing fashion shoots was a nice earner. George Best used to do them, too.
What is the car? is that a 114?
my gradfather drove this model car from the early 70's till he passed in mid 2010's, but I never knew exactly what model it is.
