This whole conversation topic is just so sweet. Bf and I like to cuddle at the bottom of the shower on long days and he's too big for the tub. He always sits against the back and lets me lay back on him. Halfway through the cuddle sesh, I can tell he is cold and uncomfortable, even though he denies me asking like twenty times. By the time we run out of hot water, his skin will be cold and I'll feel so bad but so safe and loved in the end. I don't know what I'd do if I lost that. Thank you guys for sacrificing comfort to see us safe and cozy- ya'll are too underappreciated

I know it sounds crazy, but maybe if you guys communicated you could *both* be comfortable. “Oof my arm is getting numb, could you move a little bit to the left?” “Yeah, no problem.” “You still comfortable?” “Yeah, let me just readjust quickly.” It’s not rocket science

The skeleton on its back as identified as male. The other seems to be iffy. So there may be no “gal” at all, and if there is one it’s not the one with a numb arm.
Amanda_Mathea357 赞2020/10/1
I am hijacking the top comment to clarify some things: Both skeletons are believed to be male, though this has been debated. [Source](https://www.penn.museum/collections/highlights/physicalanthro/the-lovers.php) Some more context: "From archeological evidence, researchers discovered that the city of Teppe Hasanlu was destroyed around 800 BCE by an invading army that sacked the city and burned it to the ground. The Hasanlu Lovers were likely hiding from these invaders in the grain bin when they died of asphyxiation from the smoke emanating from the fires raging around the city." All historians: "These two good friends..."
9mackenzie130 赞2020/10/2
More likely “these might be lovers, they might be father and son, or they might have been friends.” Displays of affection between males was very common and did not always mean sexual connection, and no historian worth their salt would say they were 100% sure these two men were lovers. That’s why historians/archeologist try not to define the relationship when they have no clue.

A couple of things give me pause - 1. sexing from osteological features has a pretty poor accuracy rate. I do this professionally, and I always note that most studies with known sexes produce somewhere in the 60% accuracy ball park. Its a helpful tool to develop bioarchaeological profiles, but its not a slam dunk. Second, techniques have improved greatly since the 1970s. Any work that was done that long ago I'd want to recheck. They've got some pretty good descriptions on the digital collections website, but the Penn museum collection is riddled with errors, especially with their sexing. Not exactly a dig on Penn, but its a massive collection, and a lot of it was analyzed by interns with little oversight. Third, if the second individual is a sub adult, then their sex should always be listed as indeterminate. You don't sex subadults, it just can't be done accurately because you haven't gone through puberty to see enough biological or skeletal changes. Not that I'm saying two dudes couldn't be romantically linked as they suffocated in a granary! Dying sucks, love who you love!

The Hasanlu Lovers are a pair of human remains found by a team from the University of Pennsylvania led by Robert H. Dyson at the Teppe Hasanlu archaeological site, located in the Solduz Valley in the West Azerbaijan Province of Iran, in 1972. The two human skeletons were found together in a bin during excavations, seemingly embracing at the time of death. Approximately 246 skeletons were found at the site altogether. The skeleton on the right (referred to as SK 335) is lying on its back. Dental evidence suggest SK 335 is a young adult, possibly 19–22 years of age. Researchers identified the skeleton as male largely based on the pelvis. The skeleton had no apparent evidence of disease or healed lifetime injuries. The skeleton on the left (SK 336) is lying on its left side facing SK 335. It has been aged to about 30–35 years. While sex determination is less definitive for this skeleton, evidence suggests SK 336 was also male. The individual appeared to have been healthy in life, and the skeleton had no apparent evidence of healed lifetime injuries. At the time of excavation, this skeleton was originally identified as female.

That's what I was thinking at first, that it might be a child and their parent with one comforting or maybe mourning if the other was already dead and their own death was imminent. That being said, if I recall correctly, having children in your teens was pretty uncommon back in the day. People typically waited 'til their mid-to-late 20s before conceiving. I could be wrong though, as when I read that tidbit of info I believe it was for the middle ages, not sure if it was applicable to ancient history as well.
withlovesparrow22 赞2020/10/2
There's a chain further up with a hypothesis that they're hiding in the grain bin from invaders and died of asphyxiation due to everything being burned to the ground. The hand on the face could be them trying to keep the other awake as they both pass out. This gets especially heart wrenching if they're father and son.
MasterFubar63 赞2020/10/1
From their estimated age ranges, could have been father and son. It wouldn't surprise me if a man aged 35 had a son aged 19 in 800 BCE.
Silas_L30 赞2020/10/2

elder_flowers28 赞2020/10/2
It's probably not that they were maliciously hiding the truth but that they didn't even check too much and just assumed. Telling the sex of bones is not always easy, there is a lot of room for mistakes depending on what bones were preserved, how well were preserved and the characteristics of the individual. Lots of times the sex was determined by context. There were weapons around? That's a male. Jewels? That's female. A couple? Man and woman. That's what happened, for example, with the Red "Lady" of Paviland [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red\_Lady\_of\_Paviland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Lady_of_Paviland) This has an obvious problem, you won't learn when your vision of sex roles and love life in other cultures is wrong if you aren't looking for those differences. Not depending just in contextual clues for sexing skeletons allowed for a lot of our knowledge of sex roles in other societies to improve and evolve.

Petsweaters60 赞2020/10/1
Just like people are still assuming that one is kissing the other, when we have no idea why their bodies are arranged this way
StubbiestZebra33 赞2020/10/1
It would be pretty unlikely they ended up like this by chance. The only real options are, they died embracing or were positioned in an embrace. No way this happens by chance with how perfect it is. The only oddity is the younger one has their left hand under their back. But I was in an accident at 18 the screwed my back up and I lay like that sometimes.
Petsweaters39 赞2020/10/1

9mackenzie123 赞2020/10/1
That’s not true. The entire town was razed to the ground- that’s why the site is so remarkable. The skeletons were all in the position of their death. These two were in a grain silo bin.
OMGItsCheezWTF22 赞2020/10/1
So was the town attacked or don't we know? Were these two hiding and found? Do we have a cause of death for them? (sometimes pathologists can determine a probable cause of death from a skeleton) It says there was no evidence of healed injuries but says nothing about a cause of death.
9mackenzie59 赞2020/10/2
They are pretty sure they asphyxiated, they don’t know if the town was attacked but it’s likely. None of the skeletons in the town were buried, they laid where they died in 800 BCE until excavated in 1972 CE. That shows that more than likely the town was attacked, if it was just a massive fire many would have gotten out and would have probably tried to bury at least some of the dead. This town was near the Assyrians, so it might have been them that attacked. They didn’t have a written language (or none has been discovered at least), so we don’t know what language they spoke.
terragthegreat25 赞2020/10/1

This isn’t from a tomb. It’s from a town that was sacked, and bodies were strewn about. The prevailing theory is that the bodies (and other artifacts found) were left untouched afterwards.

This has me imagining that the hand on the face is actually the one in the left trying to wake up/keep concious the one on the right. If this happened during the siege maybe they didn't know each other, or were friends or workers together and they hid in a grain bin to stay safe. Or lovers like everyone thinks. The possibilities are endless. Still a hauntingly beautiful image, no matter the circumstance.

[It’s an interesting story.](https://allthatsinteresting.com/hasanlu-lovers) The city was apparently burned to the ground by an invading army, and there are multiple skeletons in the area. What’s interesting about these two is that while the gender of the one on the right is male, the skeleton on the left has both male and female features, although this article says the second body is likely male also. So the relationship between them is not clear: lovers? father and child? friends?
