$29,000,000 in today's dollars.

I always like telling the story of Yogi Berra (yankees legend) and the land he bought in Florida. Him and a bunch of other Yankee players (Mickey Mantle included) were talked into buying plots of land in Florida. It was only after they bought the land that they realized it was essentially swamp land that would be a huge pain to develop. They had bought in at $30 an acre for useless land Around 64, a man named MT Lott started asking some of the players to sell. He was offering $150 an acre. Since most saw this as a huge payoff for land they didn’t want, they sold. But yogi kept it. He was suspicious of why this guy was offering sooooo much more for swampland. Turns out...MT Lott was a cover. It was Disney, buying up land for what would become Disney World. Yogi held firm and finally took an offer of $300,000 per acre. Just another cool “useless” land story Edit: https://www.nj.com/hudson/2017/09/how_yogi_berra_turned_real_estate_swindling_into_d.html

Maybe that's why he became a land developer?
So I guess Yogi Berra was smarter than we give him credit for.
Smarter than the average Berra.
That's how they kept those who they didn't want in Vegas from purchasing any land. The mafia via the highways and trucking unions helped build Vegas. They had a very special criteria to loan and develop before selling any land... and not to just anybody.
Canadian_Infidel53 赞2020/8/3

Yep! It’s behind a glass wall, and the bullet holes are clearly marked. There’s a lot of neat stuff there - I’m not really into the mob or it’s history, but I found it all pretty interesting, and it was a good way to spend an afternoon.

Take a look at the history of the Moulin Rouge Casino. Las Vegas actually abolished segregation four years before it became abolished nationally.
To be fair the less people wasting all of their money on gambling in your casinos the less money you earn
Hateful_Face_Licking34 赞2020/8/3
It had more to do with allowing fair employment for the Black workers after the Moulin Rouge shut down.

Exactly, I'm from LV and the mob history surrounding its development is insane. In fact, I've heard from old timers that were around before the Strip was a thing that Vegas was actually a better place when the Mob ran things vs today when corporations run things. The mob actually cared about the community, corps dont give a shit.
Criminal organizations need the community on their sides, otherwise its too expensive and risky to operate through fear. Corporations on the other hand have a litigation war chest and lobbying to shield them from responsibility.
This was a good deal to allow organized crime to wash money through legitimate businesses. Most mobsters were locked up for tax evasion, not murder.
Most mobsters don’t commit murder themselves, and it’s hard to link back. Tax evasion and money laundering is a necessary step in organized crime.

At first I read $3,000 and was like damn that’s not bad. Then I realized $3m and had the same though as you.

It was more like 10 properties on the Strip by end of 1955.
What's interesting is that Las Vegas Blvd (IE the strip) extends almost all the way to California. There are some nice places to go target shooting off of this road well south of the last casino, the M. I wonder how much more development will take place over the next 60 years along the strip?

Whenever I have a conference in Vegas, I make sure that my request for approval as well as all the expense reports say "Clark County" instead of Vegas. Probably makes no difference but the office ladies might be less jealous.

I thought the it was more that the mob convinced their friends in government to make the Strip its own county to avoid gambling laws
Nah, gambling laws are the same on and off the strip.

>Fun fact: Las Vegas has grown so exponentially over the years that construction on subdevelopments keep getting halted because they keep finding the remains of people buried by the mob back when it was the middle of the desert a 40 minute drive from the city. Got a link to proof this isn't an urban myth?

Bitcoin was a very good deal years ago when it was trading at $600, but just like an empty desert plot, speculative assets are only considered a good buy in retrospect.

The forties and fifties infrastructure projects were inspiring. Terrifying in their power but awesome nonetheless. Whole cities and industries within a matter of years from nothing. I think we should be doing projects as grand as these to mitigate the pandemic. We've got the manpower, with tens of millions unemployed, that's for sure. And the money has been shown to be in ample supply with even greater demand.
