Right? I had to check to see if I was in the same thread

This! They're called March, there's three of them. Excellent graphic novels, very educational. I fully second this recommendation.

We also have the website [Civil Right Movement Veterans](http://www.crmvet.org), to have documents and a timeline written from the experiences of the activists.

I will freely admit this country hasn’t progressed as quickly as many of us would have liked - BUT - some of us can still remember “whites only” water fountains (the only ones that were ever cleaned) and “coloreds served in the rear” signs. If you weren’t there, you cannot imagine how ugly it was, or fully appreciate how much better (believe it or not) things are now. Men like Mr. Lewis are the capeless superheroes of our age. RIP 😔

When talking to my father about all the social unrest right now, he made sure to remind me how the comparison isn’t even close to back then. It definitely helped to put some things into perspective. There’s a lot to stand against these days, but the level of violence and injustice that people like Lewis took on is profound and I think should remind us all of the progress made through their actions

This is something I always bring up when people voice concern or chastisement of the rioting coming out of the George Floyd thing, especially here in LA. Compared to the riots after MLK or Rodney King, the George Floyd rioting was immensely tame.

There's a hospital near me that still has a black and a white door. It's not labeled, but they both lead into the lobby and they're a few feet apart.

I grew up in Jackson Mississippi in the 90’s-00’s and when we moved into our house there was a weird little half bathroom kind of thing in the laundry room. We asked what it was for since we were from Virginia and they said “for the colored folks”. It was ripped out as soon as we moved in.

This is the kind of mugshot that you frame on the wall next to your diplomas and trophies. It continuously drops intangible mics just by existing.

And, indeed, Lewis and his friends weren't broken at all.

He told his fellow Freedom Riders, "They may beat you, they may arrest you, but still look them in the eye and respect them." The way of Non-violence is not for the weak, nor is it for the cowardly. Only the brave and the strong practice Non-violence. Mr. Lewis was the true living embodiment of that principle. Edit: The man literally brought love to a gunfight and won.

Would these "crimes" be a part of his criminal record to this date?
Indeed. He was arrested in 2013 as well, for protesting in DC...as a sitting member of Congress

Yes. Just like marijuana possession can be on your record years after the end of prohibition.

That is the face of a man who’s taken an illegal dump. I envy him. RIP you king.

Another pillar of our history has passed. We will miss him. He was there on the front lines with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King and Jesse Jackson and Andrew Young. Just the day before we also lost Reverend Vivian. We would not be as far as we are today with civil rights had it not been for him. RIP John Lewis.

Kinda looks a bit like Hendrix though? His mouth reminds me of Hendrix at least

People act like segregation was back when dinosaurs ruled the earth

It’s amazing what people had to live through in those times. Even still today. But the fact that they know this and live with it still happy is amazing. Their perseverance is a trait I long to have. Especially in todays times perseverance is something that everyone needs.

whats a 'white' bathroom ?
Up until an embarrassingly short time ago, some places in America had bathrooms (and water fountains, etc.) that were designated as “Whites Only”.

One of the coolest moments of my life was sitting in an Atlanta city council meeting and turning around to be face to face with John Lewis. I got to shake his hand and for some reason I spastically told him I voted for him. He was really nice and thanked me. 😂

Just watched the 2020 on Timothy Coggins. He was killed by trailer park white guys for messing with a white women. That was in 1983. Shit was sad as f. I kno we aren’t where we need to be. But we’re making progress... we got to start loving one another. I believe most all folks that are decent people want the same thing regardless of color sex socioeconomic status. We’re all riden this rock together and deserve equal respect. Much ❤️to all 34 yo honkie here.

Sad to see segregation returning, but being told it's "empowering disadvantaged communities" who want to feel *safe.*
