I can't even begin to imagine what the mother in the picture is feeling, to think that at any moment you might be separated from your child and never see them again. The relief must've been beyond words.
Unfortunately, it looks like she was already separated from the male side of her family. Hopefully they were also on that train and were reunited soon after.

I ran it through a [colorizer]().

I’m sorry ... WHAT?!?!? Is this an app or website, wtf??? I want more info!
You take a color photo, you turn it black and white. You give the neural network the black and white version and ask it to turn it into the color version. After millions of attempts it eventually learns how to do it.
Why do people dont believe in the holocaust. I mean it clearly happened
Because peoples propensity to act like a smartass and wilfully be contrarian to completely established beliefs won’t end. Combine this with the dawn of the internet, where bullshit ideas can be ‘legitimised’ by websites and communities, you have [insert factual historical event] deniers.

They resent the martyring, is the thing. Makes people *sympathize* with Jewish folk, and they can't have that.

Exactly, as soon as they get rid of the sympathy they can start work on the next one...

The Holocaust is what eventually led to Israel being created, as reparations. If you hate Israel, it's very convenient to deny the Holocaust. EDIT: ~~Weird downvotes ... ?~~ This is exactly why Iran denies the Holocaust, my dudes. I personally do not deny it; just saying what's going through their heads.
Stupidity, however, predates the internet by thousands of years.
Yeah but it probably wasn't as widespread before the internet because almost no one took that shit seriously and you had to buy a book if you wanted to "learn" about it.
They are also racist. The deniers are all racists.

It’s always rooted in antisemitism. That’s why it’s a widely accepted thing in certain Middle Eastern countries, where antisemitism is also insanely common. You’d think these Jew hating bastards would acknowledge the Holocaust happened and throw their support behind the idea of continuing what Hitler started. But they deny the Holocaust ever happened, and yet they somehow also think that “if it did happen, the Jews deserved it”.
Eisenhower was smart enough to order that Allied troops liberating the concentration camps meticulously preserve as much evidence as they could, because he knew there would be people decades down the line claiming the Holocaust never happened. Unfortunately he failed to account for how people can wilfully ignore evidence even when it is presented to them.
He was also wise enough to warn Americans against the rise of the military industrial complex, but that was ignored too.

“Holocaust denial is supported by some Middle Eastern governments, including Iran and Syria.” ..wow
“伊朗和叙利亚等一些中东政府支持否认大屠杀。”

They really hate Jewish people over in Iran and Syria, it's really the same holy war that has been going on for centuries.

That myth is so widespread on Reddit, in my experience. The amount of times I've seen a person unironically saying things like "The SS were evil, but the average German soldier was just fighting for his country" is absolutely shocking. It's the same with all the Rommel apologia, the amount of times I have seen people on Reddit pushing the "Good German" lie about Rommel is honestly depressing.
My grandfather helped liberate Bergen Belsen and i never saw him cry until he was dying and all of a sudden unloaded what he saw. He sobbed. It happened.
Because they are fascists, and the holocaust made that ideology toxic to most people. So they want to deny or diminish the holocaust in order to make fascism more palatable to ordinary people.
The quote right at the top of the article is very powerful: "I cannot believe, today, that the world almost ignored those people and what was happening. How could we have all stood by and have let that happen? They do not owe us anything. We owe them, for what we allowed to happen to them." – Carrol Walsh, Liberator Reminds me of a quote often believed to be from MLK: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter."
I got a chance a few years ago to talk to a Jewish American WWII veteran whose unit liberated a concentration camp when he was a teenager... I encourage all young people to talk to and interview people who fought in WWII and were even alive during this time while you can. They won’t be around for much longer. Once they die, their stories and their experiences will die with them.
Freed by the US Army in 1945, a lot of these people died right there next to the train when they got out because they were so starving they couldn’t move
16 died out of 2500, there are many articles about this event.

So my grandmother was in a similar situation. When she was 7 years old, the war was just over (it was like 1946). She was in a rather rich austrian family living in a croation village, which had of course been under germen rule in the war. After the war however they were ordered to leave by croatian partisans. And so they did: they grabbed everything they had and just moved out. After 4 months they were told they could come back and so they did. But, after another month or so the partisans decided it was best to get rid of them in a croation concentration camp like facility. After a few weeks imprisoned they should have been moved to another concentration camp, when the train driver made an announcement: something like:" the train will stop here for 15 minutes to refill. The Austrian border is 200m from here." Her (or my?) family and the other passengers understood that of course and ran to Austria where they began a new live. Later my grandmothers uncle and another family member went back to croatia hoping it was safe, but they went missing a few weeks after and probably died soon after.
Wow that one on the back left looks like a walking skeleton.

Seriously, everyone else is (understandably) crying, and this lady is just all "Look at this shit! You beautiful son of a bitch! Get over here!" And honestly, that's the kind of energy I want to have.
I’m reading Mans Search for Meaning at the moment. It describes the concentration camp life in gruesome detail and the psychology of the prisoners. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in learning more about Jewish prisoner life.
我最近正在读《活出意义来》(Man's Search for Meaning)。

Can’t even imagine the swirl of emotions going through these women’s heads. Elation from being freed from certain death, uncertainty about what kind of world awaits them, hell they were found by a group of American soldiers so who knows if they were nervous about a group of armed men who speak a language they don’t understand standing before them in the middle of the woods
The people in there were probably thankful to die quick from a stray round... At Auschwitz, American bombers did recon, but made no attacks. Reportedly, the Jews at Auschwitz were screaming at the sky “Drop the bombs! Drop the bombs!” They didn’t care if they died. They wanted the place destroyed, their suffering ended swiftly, and with the assurance that no others would die at that hellish place. But we didn’t drop the bombs. It was considered, but deemed a waste of resources. We even considered precise strikes, hitting the furnaces and guard barracks, and administrative buildings. Instead we did nothing. EDIT: Thread locked but the source for the screaming is from the testimony of Lali Sokolov, the tattooist of Auschwitz, and here is a link https://www.livescience.com/bombing-auschwitz-wwii-pbs.html about the decision not to bomb Auschwitz despite full knowledge of what was going on.
This is one of those pictures that truly speaks a thousand words.
