Lady on the bottom right just looks bored to me. Top right clearly thinks that she's in charge.
theAtmuz307 赞2020/5/18
I feel like the bottom middle is more of the boss in that she doesn’t even have time to, nor the need to look in your direction. Whereas top right seems more like the bodyguard. *Keep* *it* *moving* *pal*
[已删除]137 赞2020/5/18
> I feel like the bottom middle I'd just like to add that she's got an amazing upper neck and chin profile. That's not a part of the body I've ever imagined being "in to", but damn.

RealMcGonzo88 赞2020/5/18
Back then, most people dressed up much more to be out in public. Suits on men were common. Nowadays, lots of people wear sweats to the grocery. Most people would not have tried that in the 50s.
[已删除]27 赞2020/5/18
Right? I've worked from home for the last 2 months and everything apart from grocery stores is shut; and can only leave the house to visit said shop, for excercise or for medical purposes. I've been wearing leggings and a hoodie all this time - obviously different leggings and hoodies to not make it sound gross!

I never thought about it before... But now I want something like a 1950's/60's people of Wal-mart sort of thing. Something like if Don Draper was at the store without a hat, not wearing a tie, and has an unbuttoned top button on his shirt...

I more of meant that I wish it was still in style. While I can go to a vintage store and try to find a dress like that, it's not as easy to do as before. And the hair...I've tried my share of tutorials and it takes skill to get it right.
[已删除]351 赞2020/5/18
I can guarantee you that your average woman back then didn’t have such extravagant clothes. I know old school Hollywood wardrobes are fantastic but you can’t compare it to the normal dresses of their time. Just like we don’t wear Chanel, Gucci or Burberry in our everyday lives, they didn’t wear clothes worn by rich red carpet actresses. You can get a beautifully tailored dress in the same style. It won’t be cheap but back then they had to cash out for some good quality clothes too.

Just google pictures of the public from the 1950s, and you'll see what the average American wore back then.
[已删除]24 赞2020/5/18
Exactly! The clothes were a lot more plain than people think. You can’t look at Merlylin Monroe and think this is how everybody dressed up. She was in fact deemed as too provocative in her lifetime. And people were outraged at women wearing sweaters! Hollywood is just not the same as reality.
Mucousyfluid43 赞2020/5/18
Somebody with art skills: I wanna know what Merlin Monroe would look like!
oftenrunaway30 赞2020/5/18
anyone else got the immediate mental image of Merlin from Sword in the Stone standing over an air grate, barley covering against the gust trying to upskirt him?
Djackazz23 赞2020/5/18
what I was about to say. their comment sounds pretty naive. then again, if you just pay attention to Hollywood it's easy to get a warped perspective on different time periods.
SkippyBluestockings76 赞2020/5/18
Go to any fabric store and look through the pattern books. They are full of retro patterns going all the way back to the 20s and 30s. They're all bringing them back I have a bunch of them that are originals from my grandmother.
AggravatingCupcake039 赞2020/5/18
That's assuming you can sew. I've taken a sewing class and I still don't see myself making one of these. The fabrics seem a bit advanced to deal with.
CuileannDhu35 赞2020/5/18
Sewing is like any other complex skill, you'd start with simpler projects, using fabrics that are easier to work with to learn the techniques and build up to a more complex project like one of those dresses. All it takes is practice and a willingness to learn. is a great and helpful community.

The photo was used in the December 4, 1950 issue of Life magazine but the models were not identified. There were some unsubstantiated guesses when this was posted to a different sub previously. The most interesting claim was that the lady in the middle of the top row was aunt:

ElDanio12389 赞2020/5/18
They do exist, the problem with these dresses is that they need to be tailored to your shoulders. Unless you are the type to get custom fitted clothing, these dresses are out of your price range.
oxpoleon38 赞2020/5/18
Tailoring is much, much cheaper than people think, if you go to independent tailors. It's as much that people don't want to put the effort in to travel to the tailor, get the fitting, wait for the work, and pay for it all, especially when so many clothes are in the "bought cheap, wore once" mentality of fast, disposable fashion.
ElDanio12325 赞2020/5/18
You have to take into consideration the cost of the dress plus the tailor job. In this case where not talking about a hem, but a restructuring of the shoulder widths on premium fabrics that have creases and other stylized elements that would need to be maintained through the tailoring. Tailoring is a lost art, most places only do the shortening of dresses these days. If any of you have a grandparent or a parent that has these skills, I urge you to learn from them as that knowledge base is invaluable. Will make you a better clothes shopper as well... I don't know any tailors unfortunately :(

'Cause your friends don't dress and if they don't dress then they're no friends of mine!
BeaversAreTasty28 赞2020/5/18
That's not very practical. Even then no one wore dresses like this all the time. Like then, they are still worn for special occasions by people willing to sew or alter their own dresses, or pay someone who can. You need very precise custom measures to get this level of fit. Which means that unless these dresses were custom tailored for these models, for this shoot, there are probably a bunch of pins and temporary stitches you can't see holding the fabric lines in place.
