**Standing, left to right:** King Haakon VII of *Norway*, Tsar Ferdinand of the *Bulgarians*, King Manuel II of *Portugal* and the *Algarve*, Kaiser Wilhelm II of *Germany* and *Prussia*, King George I of the *Hellenes* and King Albert I of the *Belgians*. **Seating, left to right:** King Alfonso XIII of *Spain*, King George V of the *United Kingdom* and King Frederick VIII of *Denmark*.
I am surprised Tzar Nicholas wasn’t there too. He was close with George V.

King George V and Tsar Ferdinand also share a bit of a resemblance in the nose area; they're both from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Ferdinand's father was first cousins with George's grandparents Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (who were also cousins).
Prime example are the Habsburgs-- look at a chronological series of portraits or busts of them and watch how a birth defect (an underbite in this case) becomes more pronounced with each generation. Family trees are supposed to be branched for a reason.
Kind of wondering why spanish homie in the front looks like they carried on the tradition

In fact, he probably avoided the worst inbreeding: there's a strong likelihood that his father, Alfonso XII, was illegitimate. His mother, queen Isabel II, was notoriously unfaithful, her husband (and first-degree cousin), Infante Francis, very definitely homosexual, and their purported son bore a strong likeness to one of the queen's favourite lovers, Enrique Puigmolto. Unfortunately, Alfonso XII then married a Habsburg, and there's indeed plenty of Habsburg inbreeding in their son's face. On top of it, Alfonso XIII married one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters, bringing haemophilia into the bloodline...
Nicholas sent his younger brother Grand Duke Michael as his representative.

Now I'm imagining a sitcom where George and Nicholas swap places to pull pranks on the nobility of Europe. The final episode is the execution of Tsar Nicholas and his family except it's really King George.
I read that Nicholas had his brother go because he was feeling quite ill.

Oh dash it all give the bloody thing to me! Yes, yes, da, Albert you stand in the back row like this, and ... nyet nyet, look at me, on the count of three... two... one snap! \[Albert - "I don't think I was looking, sorry"\]. Oh well damn. Never mind we'll take one together next time in five years
My favorite thing about Nicholas II was that he was basically a gigantic weeb but for English stuff, and he and his wife would talk to each other in English *all the time* much to everyone else's frustration. Even his last word was reportedly "what" in English.
He was kind of a dum dum but also interesting, I prefer Grand Duke Dmitriy, whose only son was mayor of palm beach

He was super into photography (that, combined with the beard and the dragon tattoo mean he was a giant hipster). At one point, he wrote that, if given the chance, he would trade Tsardom for the life of a photographer!
Tsar Nicholas II was right smack in the middle of losing the Russo-Japanese war (1905) and getting overthrown by the Bolsheviks (1917). He may have been a bit preoccupied, haha.
Absent monarchs include: Emperor Nicholas II of All Russia, King Gustaf V of Sweden, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, King Carol I of Romania, Kaiser-King Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, King Peter I of Serbia, and Sultan Mehmed V of the Ottoman Empire (Constantinople, the capital at the time, is technically in Europe).
Yeah, the title is a total lie. They aren't "the" only 9 kings of Europe. But, it's Reddit, so what else is new?
是啊,这个标题纯属扯淡。他们根本不是欧洲“唯九”的国王。不过嘛,这是Reddit,还能指望什么呢?

Fun fact: Less than 5 months after this picture was taken, Portugal stopped being a Monarchy and has been a Republic since (though, with a dictatorship at some point)
28th of May 1926 to 25th of April 1974 was the dictatorship in Portugal (Also known as Estado Novo, though at the beginning it was more of a military dictatorship that will eventually put Salazar in power). Which means that the 1st Republic lasted 16 years until it crumbled, which is pretty sad tbh. Almost half of the existence of the portuguese republic was under a dictatorship :/

He did, and he always denied that the war had anything to do with LotR. However, I think people should be honest about how cataclysmic of an event this was for all those involved. It's impossible that it had zero influence on his writings, or every other aspect of his life. The entirety of Europe was no different. I think Tolkien believed that, wanted to leave the war behind him, but there's just no way that his work wasnt based in some part on his experiences in the war. Hell, he was at the Somme. So, yeah, agreed, maybe subconscious but its definitely there.
And this is when we remember that Tolkien was a WWI vet

The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman dedicates the entire first chapter to this event. It's a great prelude to the war since it explains the stakes for several of these men and their countries
John Keegan's "The First World War" gives a great account of how things came about and took real control out of their hands. Unfortunately these men couldn't be upsetting train schedules and mobilization with anything like diplomacy and reliance on subordinates.
Dan Carlin’s much loved (on reddit) Blueprint to Armageddon draws very heavily from it too.

The War That Ended Peace by Margaret Macmillan is also a great read to understand the 30 or so years preceding WWI, where a bunch of those kings play centre stage. It really makes it stark how unprepared they were to deal with serious crises. Behind all those medals and moustaches there are a lot of very insecure men who couldn't deal with the kind of power they had.

If you just overthrew the monarchy, you don't want the royal family around. They might gather support to try to seize power again. And lots of the royal family would probably want to leave anyways. If they stay, they run the risk of being assassinated to make sure they can't take power or be used as political pawns
Albert (back right) is side eyeing all the flair on the others. He only has like three little stars and a sash. Honestly it would be pretty cool to see the American President at the time. Taft. Absolute unit with a solid stache and no flair except for a watch chain.
Just imagine the guy walking in in early industrial baron fashion, suit and tie, and just sit opposite of these guys staring. Actually Teddy Roosevelt would have absolutely done that.

Very intersting. Less than 5 months later, on 5th October, king Manuel II was deposed by a republican revolution and went into exile in England, where he lived until his death in 1932.
Portuguese-English alliance is the longest alliance in history. Makes sense they'd take care of the guy, wonder if he had kids and if you can still find a royal Portuguese bloodline in the UK.
He never had children. There was a woman who claimed to be his half sister and rightful heir who had a daughter who died in 1995 but I think she had a child so may be someone somewhere
I’m sorry OP, but the way you worded ‘the’ 9 kings of Europe make it as if these were all the kingdoms of Europe. There’s a few missing. Great photo though i loved it!

So gorgeous was the spectacle on the May morning of 1910 when nine kings rode in the funeral of Edward VII of England that the crowd, waiting in hushed and black-clad awe, could not keep back gasps of admiration. In scarlet and blue and green and purple, three by three the sovereigns rode through the palace gates, with plumed helmets, gold braid, crimson sashes, and jeweled orders flashing in the sun. After them came five heirs apparent, forty more imperial or royal highnesses, seven queens–four dowager and three regnant–and a scattering of special ambassadors from uncrowned countries. Together they represented seventy nations in the greatest assemblage of royalty and rank ever gathered in one place and, of its kind, the last. The muffled tongue of Big Ben tolled nine by the clock as the cortege left the palace, but on history’s clock it was sunset, and the sun of the old world was setting in a dying blaze of splendor never to be seen again. -Barbara Tuchman, "Guns of August "
Anyone interested in these relationships, I highly recommend the book *The Proud Tower* by Barbara Tuchman (author of *The Guns of August*). Fascinating glimpse at Europe before the Great War.
Or just read all of Tuchman. She embellishes a bit and some books/stories are more impactful than others, but I have rarely gone away disappointed. "A Distant Mirror" gave me a frame of reference for a lot of later European history and politics. The scene was set long before "The Guns of August".

To think, they all exist because Napolean scared the shit out of the monarchies so much, that Queen Victoria and King Christian had all their children intermarry to prevent further wars... and then WW1 happened because all the inbred grandchildren couldn't wait to kill one another.
Portuguese monarchy has styled ‘king of Portugal and algarve’ because algarve resisted conquest for some time and was more culturally muslim than the rest of the territory. Also it makes the country look bigger when you away it like that
Well, no. By the time Portugal got to the conquest of the algarves, during the reign of D. Sancho II, the Caliphate of Almoáde fragmented in smaller kingdoms, or Taifas. One of those Taifas' Emir named himself Amir Algarbe (in 1234), therefore naming the region Algarve, and to defend himself against the relentless advance of the portuguese military pledged his Vassalage to the Castille king Afonso X of Castille. Well this made Algarve a Castille dominion and any attempt of conquest of Portugal an act of war. To contract this Afonso III (new Portuguese king) had the religious military orders (Templar orders) conquer towns ("praças") as a "defensive buffer" to protect against Muslim advances. The "buffer" (aka treaty circumvention) got so big that by 1249 all the Algarve was annexed, which if you remember was under Castille's protection. To fortify his claim to the newly acquired territory, and stick the middle finger to Castille, Afonso III named himself "King of Portugal and Algarves". Castille didn't like that, and there were some tension for a while but it was resolved in the [Treaty of Badajoz (1267)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Badajoz_(1267)) where Portugal ceded some towns in along the border with Castille and Castille recognized Portugal as the sovereign of Algarve. That title went on to be kept in the title of the Portuguese Kings for the rest of the monarchy, and they even tackled a few more just to be more pompous. My favorite was the one used during the XVI Century " Pela Graça de Deus, Rei de Portugal e dos Algarves, d'Aquém e d'Além-Mar em África, Senhor da Guiné e da Conquista, Navegação e Comércio da Etiópia, Arábia, Pérsia e Índia, etc. "
