I remember $0.87 per gallon in the late 1990's.

What are prices like now in the US? I feel like they're still really low compared to other places. In the UK our prices are done by the litre and it currently costs me approx £1.25 per litre. (google tells me £1.25 is about $1.56. Convert that into a US gallon and it's $5.90 per gallon.
Idiot_Savant_Tinker24 赞2019/7/20
In Oklahoma right now it's $2.45 a gallon. **However**, before all the EU redditors tell me how easy my life is because gas is so cheap, be mindful that in the US we typically have to drive much farther to work, in vehicles much less fuel efficient. I live "Close" to work, only 13 miles (21km) one way. Not long ago, I had a job that was 40 miles (65 km) one way, in a vehicle that managed 23 mpg (~9.8 km/l).
MediocreGamerAtBest26 赞2019/7/20
That is the big difference. People often tell us "the US is behind on public transportation". We'll, since a LARGE portion of the US is rural and it simply isn't cost effective to build it in 85%(?) of the country, we drive. I now drive 19 miles to work. It used to be 106 miles. In a Silverado. The closest store is 9 miles away. The closest restaurant is 13 miles. To us in rural Georgia, that is close. Where I used to live in Pennsylvania, that was outrageous. My commute to work there was 13 miles and I thought it was long. I also remember the spike in prices during the Gulf War. It was at $1.29/gal and as a college student, I was freaking out. Now, I'd LOVE those prices.

This is pretty cool. Kind of bums be out how expensive it is to be a car enthusiast nowadays. I pick up a ton of extra shifts and I used to work a second job just so I can have some extra money to restore my weekend car and it’s not even halfway done yet.
ApocApollo984 赞2019/7/19
Seriously bums me out. I grew up on the fringe of millennial/gen Z. There was such a wealth of automotive and motorsport history that I grew up loving and learning about. I had posters of all the yearly Hot Wheels releases on my walls, I had my TV set to SPEED Channel 24/7. I could walk into any store and find some kind of NASCAR merchandise. My favorite place in the summer was the local dirt race track, even just hanging out in the stands felt like my home away from home. Now I'm in my early 20's. The race track is closed down. SPEED Channel is now FOX Sports 1. Hot Wheels are made of plastic now instead of metal. There's no way in hell I can afford to do anything I really dreamed of doing to my daily driver, if I'm lucky I can buy a stock car spoiler for it. The idea of being a race car driver, or even going to school to get a degree in engineering and become a crew chief is long fucking gone. And to top it all of, we're seriously talking about automating driving. The world has absolutely shifted away from car culture, not just in the past 49 years, but the past 20 too. Fuck, I'm too young to be ranting like this.
1maginasian310 赞2019/7/19
I dislike automated cars, but dam the amount of people incapable of driving seems to be getting higher. Also everyone seems to be texting while driving 80 down the highway, which also furthers that point.

I work at what used to be Speed Channel (now FS1 like you said). We still do Race Hub out of our building here in Charlotte. Hope you still watch because that helps me out!! Lol Fun fact - Race Hub is the highest rated studio show on FS1. It’s a shame they rebranded Speed Channel. I think there’s still a large viewing audience out there for motorsports. And they’re being underserved right now. But...that’s just the way the business is going. Even ESPN is hurting. I know because I used to work for them as well. Less and less people are watching live sports. I need to find a way out of this business. Because along with the increase in automation in broadcast technology and the continual decrease in viewership, I don’t think my job will make it all the way to my retirement age. Lol
BayshoreCrew78 赞2019/7/19
Hey man I get that. Just another thing boomers had easier than us unfortunately. It’s tough to afford anything nowadays and you obviously understand why. I sweat day in and day out to get my car where it’s at. I was just like you as a kid too. Completely obsessed with cars and collected hotwheels and watched SPEED channel too. Dreaming of the day I could buy my own car and restore it and modify it. Right now I look at it and I calculate what I have left to purchase to finish the resto and it’s somewhere near another 10-15 thousand dollars. And as my student loans start to roll in this year and the responsibilities start to pile up from getting older. The more and more I realize that finishing the car might take another decade. Or might not even happen at all. I can’t just be irresponsible and put other things off to fund the project. I still say you should not let go of your car passion. Continue to love and work towards it.
ApocApollo20 赞2019/7/19
Thankfully I've been able to turn my passion into some sort of career. I'm a graphic designer in an undisclosed major American motorsports league. So I am fortunate enough trade my soul out to racecars. But it's graphic design, it doesn't pay enough to put the *real* vroom vroom juice in my car. I've dreamed of owning a BMW era MINI Cooper for the past decade. But I grew up and learned just how astoundingly expensive the upkeep and maintenance of one of those British-German bastards are. I can't do it. It breaks my heart. There was a MINI that I test drove April 2018 that I wanted, I saw it on a used car lot yesterday. I knew it had problems when I drove it, but I was talked out of buying it at the time, and it broke my heart to see the new owner was having so much trouble with it that they already traded it in. Shit's just too expensive now. I won't walk away from what I love. But growing up now with the passion that we have, it just doesn't feel fair. It's hard to imagine a future where motorsports and car culture are more, or even equally popular, as they are now.
atlas_nodded_off73 赞2019/7/19
> Just another thing boomers had easier than us unfortunately Wasn't like that. There were some that were able to do this, just as there are today. For most of us getting a 4 or 5 year old daily driver and paying bills was the goal. I drove a 62 Chevy II from 1970 to 1977, 2 speed auto, 0-60 in less than a mile. It did have rubber floor mats and a heater. It wasn't hot rods and milkshakes for everyone.
[已删除]38 赞2019/7/19
It’s funny. I talk to my grandfather and he had all these incredible classic cars from the 30s-60s that are now worth a fortune. I asked him how he could afford them on a bricklayers wage, and he looked at me like I wasn’t getting it at all, & explained when he bought them they were just 15 year old cars that might have looked cool in their day but were by then were so out of style and on their last legs they were really just cheap crappy old cars like any other 15yo car, not new enough to be cool or old enough to be considered a classic, so most got used up and junked just like a 2005 car today. It’s kind of hard to imagine, but, that’s why there are so few survivors of some classics even though they were mass produced, & it’s still the same way we think of objects lifecycles today.

In 1980? Maybe like 2 grand LOL I talked to this older gentleman that restores cars and he told me in the 80’s that late 60’s and 70’s cars were worth jack shit. That “*We spent our entire youth chopping those cars apart and now we’re paying to put them back together*”
Devildog196531 赞2019/7/19
I had allot of cars in the 80’s that I wish I would have held on to. I was looking through an Auto trader magazine from 1983. Allot of muscle cars for under $1500. There was a 69 Shelby Mustang for $15k. Which at that time seemed ridiculous. 😂
carsntooled30 赞2019/7/19
Early 80's I bought my 72 Nova for $800, a 73 Charger for $750 and in 1996 I bought my 71 Torino for $900. Wish I would've kept even one of them....
Jrdirtbike11417 赞2019/7/19
Don't feel too bad. I bought a pair of 1966 Mustang Coupes to tear down and rebuild as one car with my dad for $500 in 2004 (14 at that time). My step dad made me sell them for $1500 a few years later before I could save enough money to do anything with them :(
kellypg26 赞2019/7/19
It really isn't that expensive unless you're trying to build a "classic." The reason they could build up a 70's muscle car for cheap is because they were plentiful back then and parts were everywhere. It's the same as building a 90's Honda or an srt4 or a Cobalt now. The scene has shifted. You can easily build a 11 second car for under 5k right now including the car.

Nascar_is_better225 赞2019/7/19
to me all the bright colors and matching outfits, not to mention all the people almost in a "look at me do work on this car" pose strike me as a photo op for an ad (for the gas station) or magazine. What the hell is that red top girl even doing? polishing that blower? And why are the cars being repaired outside in the sun, blocking the self-service gas pumps?

FredFlintston352 赞2019/7/19
I think it may be for the radio station KMET FM. The color coordination, far from random group of cars and that no one is looking at the camera screams staged shot. Wikipedia says KMET was prog rock and stopped in late 80s

I stayed on this photo a long time zooming in and out in each car searching the back ground reading the comments then going back in to look at what other people noticed, great picture, feels a little staged like it might have been for a magazine cover. I also read a lot of complaints about how the car trade has gotten expensive and I think people missed the point of hot rodding if you look at these cars they are all from the decade prior to the picture at this time the 50s and 60s cars were out of reach of young people money wise so they built what they could afford, it’s what drove the custom mini truck market and can still be done today find your era build your rod
SAR_K9_Handler53 赞2019/7/19

9bikes26 赞2019/7/19
> feels a little staged 100% staged. Even right after a car event, catching so many cars at the same gas station at the same time would be unlikely. Dead give away in the angle. There just happens to be a spot where a photographer could stand with his camera and look down on the cars?

I almost thought that this was a fake picture, but I remembered that KMET billboards were usually the right side up. Anyone who was alive during this time period knew that any KMET bumpersticker was always presented *upside down*. Now in my forties, I’m stupid nostalgic for that time. I actually seek out things with that strip on it (it’s called a super stripe). KMET was a Los Angeles FM radio station owned by Metromedia (hence the "MET" in its call sign) that broadcast at 94.7 MHz, beginning in June 1968. It signed off on February 14, 1987. The station, nicknamed "The Mighty Met" (among other nicknames), was a pioneering station of the "underground" progressive rock format.
