I walkways find it really sad when people have gone from such a high point in their career to a relatively low one. Like football/soccer player to janitor is rough. My families cleaner used to be a civil engineer in South Korea before he moved to Australia.
I used to work with a guy that was on the (if I remember correctly) Polish team in the early 80s. He was a star player that was treated like a rock star. When I was working with him he was cleaning apartments and was a drunk. He would bring in newspaper articles with pictures of him on the front page and tell me about all the groupies he had. It was very sad to see how his life changed. I hope he was able to get his shit together
Alcohol and gambling are the two main reasons that brought down a lot of those young football talents in Poland. Specially if player was addicted to both those things at the same time.

Football isn’t exactly something that transfers well into old age. I imagine the alcoholism is a coping mechanism for losing the ability to do the thing you were made to do.

A lot of countries don’t allow a transfer of degrees from other countries, so you end up having to start all over again.

Yes which is a lot easier if you are young and most academic stuff are still fresh...but if you already have done that a long time ago and you have to provide money like "RIGHT NOW" and every expense matters (which is the case with most emigrants) you end up giving up on it or sometimes postpone it indefinitely.
There is an accord among Engineering Boards of some countries to certify and allow their engineers to work in foreign land. In this case, it might be that the Board Of Engineers of either South Korea and Australia not being part of this accord and made their engineers uncertified and unable to work in the other country Edit: The Washington Accord Edit 2: both countries are signatories of the accord. The case might be that the university that gave him his eng degree aren't certified by Korean Board of Engineer.
True. My uncle played First Division (now Premier League) soccer here in the UK. Played against the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Bryan Robson, Glenn Hoddle etc, he’s been a bus driver for the last 35 years...
cant play football in your 50s, well some do, but not most

For what it's worth, he was a very happy and helpful man when I met him. I agree the difference is quite big but it didn't seem to impact his outlook on life.
My uncle toured the world and won a few Olympic medals - now he gardens. He says his early life was for him, and that his retirement is for his wife. Keeps a nice strong bottle in the shed though.
I think about this too sometimes. But when you think about it sports is not a large part of the average professional's life. The biggest sport here is NFL and the average career is only 3 years. Thats such a small part of anyone's life. Some of these guys make millions and they think it will last forever but it won't, its short. But then again when you think about it, all of our lives are short
My Dad said he used to give money to an ex NFL player that lived under a bridge in Pittsburgh in the 80s. I'll have to see if he knows who it was. edit: it was Mike Webster.
Well not a sad story - but if I remember correctly the janitor in my college had a very successful / financially rewarding real estate career. Worked as a janitor early in the morning so his kids would get free/ highly discounted tuition. Maybe this guy just liked helping and got bored in retirement?
You know he might not feel like he needs your pity...

Right? He just might be happy in his work. It might be a good job. I know school janitors in the U.S. get paid pretty good and its considered a county job with county employees benefits.
I do janitorial work on the side. Ill crack 100k this year

Going from a high stakes part of your life where everything is on the line to a career where all the pressure is off, might be a huge relief to soldiers and professional athletes.
Yep. My great grandfather was 574-575th battalion of the Big Red 1, he fought in the battle of the Bulge and a lot of others in the European theatre. From what others in he battalion had said about him, he was a fearless badass, but to me he was the kindest and most calm person on the face of the planet. War changes people, and I am sure his calm demeanor was a result of his experience in war. I really miss him, it's a shame my wife and son never got to meet him. :( After he was out of the service he worked as a milkman and ice cream maker for the same company for 20 years, then worked as a janitor at the high school, and then as a part time mortician. He was happy to do any job as long as it helped people, that was his only real requirement. Don't look down on someone who took a career path you didn't expect, you never know why they did what they did. What people do for a career is not who they are as person, we get too wrapped up in that. Instead of asking "what do you do?" to someone new, ask " what do you do for fun?", it will change perspective.

Is the two Us in the nickname a dutch thing? Like Ruud van Nistelrooy?
A double vowel indicates vowel length in dutch spelling. It's the difference between Ruud as short for Rudolf (vowel - single consonant - vowel is also 'long') and 'Rudd'. 'Rudy' isn't as much of a thing so the short for names like Rudolf is often Ruud instead, so yes in a way it's a "dutch nickname thing" , but similarly for instance in the word 'door' oo also isn't pronounced like in cartoon. It's just that in Dutch that is a consistent rule.
这就像 Rudolf 的缩写 Ruud(元音-单辅音-元音组合同样是“长音”)和 'Rudd' 之间的区别。
'Rudy' 这种叫法没那么普遍,所以 Rudolf 这类名字的缩写通常是 Ruud,所以从某种程度上说,这确实是种“荷兰式昵称”,但同样道理,比如在 'door' 这个词里,oo 的发音也和 cartoon 里的不一样。
只不过在荷兰语里,这是一条一以贯之的规则罢了。

It was rumoured when I was in high school, but I didn't really buy it because it was such a big change? A friend of mine looked into it and found out it was actually true (turns out he has his own wiki page, which is where this picture comes from).
That's what you'd expect but I never heard him talk about it, nor even once. I'm not sure if he didn't want to talk about or didn't want to seem like he was bragging, but he kept quiet about all the time I spent there.
Is that the same as the soccer move? I’m guessing he coined the move?

I can imagine that part of his life not never coming up in the most meaningless conversations. "so dad, I passed my driving license test!" "I played against the guy that revolutionized football both as a player and a coach... So try harder"
As a Barcelona fan especially, Cruyff holds a special place in my heart. This is super cool.

Along these lines, I use to be a successful stand up comic, working with all the biggest names in comedy. You name them, I’ve worked with them and know them. I toured the biggest clubs and theaters for almost a decade. My career recently nose dived and now I’m about to end up at some “low status” job like janitor. Last Friday night stung a bit. I went to see the number one box office movie in the world, because my good friend is in it. But my other good friend was in another movie that was also playing. So I had to pick and choose which friend I want to watch in a major motion picture first. Then I leave the movies and next door in the front window of bookstore is a book another friend wrote. And he has his own tv show. So I buy an Esquire magazine, open up the first page, and there’s a picture of another friend that I know. I walk into my favorite gallery and there’s a giant painting of another friend that I know....I don’t even drive down Sunset anymore. The last time I drove down it, I had three friends with their own billboards and one with a giant add of their face on the side of and entire building. My wife secretly gets pissed when she sees my friends success on a Instagram. Whenever she gets quiet, I just think,”well, she must have just seen one of my friends announce that they got their own tv show.” The worse part is, I destroyed my own career.; not with drugs or drinking. I just stopped. I couldn’t do it anymore. I got burned out. Everyday I say I am going to get back to work, but everyday I don’t. I am filled with anxiety about starting over. The one positive is that my friends and colleagues remember and miss me whenever I do show up to a show. I have no problem with a “low status” job. What bothers me is I don’t want people to look at my with sympathetic eyes or as a has-been or a could-of-been.
i feel like every janitor has a tangential connection to the most important people and events, but it is part of janitorial code to not share unless asked.
For people not knowledgeable about the history of football, this is a big deal. Cruyff is high up on the GOAT list, top 10 without doubt and you easily argue to put him much higher. Pele was the player of the 1960's, Maradona the player of the 80's. This guy right here was the best player of the 70's.
