I honestly think she has just had too much of people, any people doing anything at all, and finds cows, horses, dogs etc to be far more enjoyable. After all it must get tiring being The Queen, but she doesn’t have to when animals are involved.

Just asking but is it a possibility that royalty military photos are staged somewhat? I’d assume it’s an awesome move for PR but roles in war time would be limited to certain positions. Nonetheless it’s a powerful statement to see people so high up take on important roles defending their country.
termitered62 赞2018/7/20
Nah, prince William was in the thick of it when he served. It's always been that way with the royals. Generally
smeggydick34 赞2018/7/20
Unless I'm wrong, it was Harry who saw more active combat service, flying Apaches in Iraq, while William was based in North Wales piloting Mountain Rescue helicopters.

In March 1945, a truck mechanic (No. 230873) in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, based at the Mechanical Transport Training Section, Camberley, Surrey, received a visit from her parents and her sister. Her parents just happened to be King George VI and the Queen, and her sister was Princess Margaret. That truck mechanic was Princess – later Queen – Elizabeth. In 1942, at age 16, Elizabeth registered with the Labour Exchange –the British employment agency at the time – and was extremely keen to join a division of the women’s armed forces. Her father was reluctant to let her do so, but eventually relented. Once in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, Elizabeth learned how to change a wheel, deconstruct and rebuild engines, and drive ambulances and other vehicles. Joining the ATS as an honorary Second Subaltern, Elizabeth achieved the rank of honorary Junior Commander within five months. Here she can be seen maintaining an Austin K2 ambulance and a "Tilly" light truck. Unlike the other members of the ATS, Elizabeth returned each night to sleep in the royal residence of Windsor Castle. Sykes-Pico318 赞2018/7/20
So she served as a mechanic, not an ambulance driver?
shuipz94368 赞2018/7/20
I remember reading somewhere that she was a lorry (truck) and ambulance driver, and all drivers were trained to maintain the vehicles as well, so the mechanic was part of the training.
cbc277101 赞2018/7/20
That's pretty interesting! I wondered when watching an episode of The Crown how she was able to instruct the others on an overheating engine while in Africa.

Copy pasted from wiktionary: Origin obscure. Perhaps from English dialectal lurry (“to lug or pull about, drag”). Perhaps of North Germanic origin, related to Norwegian lurja, lorja, lerja (“wet, shapeless lump”), Norwegian lura (“cow-dung”), see lurt. Perhaps of Latin origin, related to French lourd (“heavy”). I live in a country that speaks predominantly British English, and has been using lorry since I learned English.
[已删除]63 赞2018/7/20
The armies of world war two weren't structured like those now, if you drove a truck you were also responsible for keeping it going however you could. My grandfather drove and fought through Africa and Italy, he left England a cobbler and came back a mechanic too!
TheBritishFish26 赞2018/7/20
What armies now don't expect drivers to maintain their own vehicles? The British Army certainly does.
[已删除]43 赞2018/7/20
The US military, if your forces you might have seen it. Former British army myself but I've mainly seen it when I was a contract aircraft mechanic working overseas with a lot of Americans. They don't have flexible or multi role positions like we do, if your chock man B then you remove chock B and that's your job. If your a forklift driver you drive the fork and that's it. Other big armies are similar and it's a huge waste of manpower.
[已删除]19 赞2018/7/20

PathologicalLiar_141 赞2018/7/20
Sleeping in her own castle? Isn’t it something they’d try to avoid if the whole act was meant to inspire morale?
matty8076 赞2018/7/20
This is what her mother said when asked why the royal family hadn't evacuated to Canada as they had been advised to do: >The children won't leave without me. I won't leave without the King. And the King will never leave. I have mixed feelings about the idea of a royal family in any capacity, but they did well during the war. I'd imagine the presence of the crown princess getting her hands dirty in a way she really didn't have to would be a significant enough morale boost that she could be forgiven for going home after her shift.
[已删除]36 赞2018/7/20
Yeah, it was a big morale boost. This is from the German perspective, but they said the royal family was the most dangerous family in Britain because them remaining in the UK ~~increased the country's stability and war support~~ increased morale
[已删除]24 赞2018/7/20
>increased the country’s stability and war support Except for Edward, who makes stability decrease by 0.10% a week.

I was thinking the same. Many people growing up under a monarchy would have deemed it appropriate that she left each night.
Haffnaff41 赞2018/7/20
I don’t think many of us expect them to actually put themselves in active combat (at least the immediate royal family) due to their roles as diplomats and figureheads, but seeing them perform and put themselves in danger still humanises them and demonstrates their commitment to the country. The royal family has served in the military throughout our history. Harry was a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan (until the media revealed his location) and Andrew flew several missions in the Falklands.
troggbl20 赞2018/7/20
Not to mention Charles was a trained Jet and Helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy. And Prince Philips service in World War II would make a decent movie.
[已删除]18 赞2018/7/20
Monarchism was huge and very very strong during this time period, so people were prepared to fight and die for the Monarch. Members of the Royal family did want to be as involved as possible (I think King George VI tried to be onboard a ship during Normandy but Churchill wouldn't allow it) because it boosted morale and put them on the same level as their men. Quite a few Kings have died in combat actually! It's really interesting stuff.
ImALittleCrackpot96 赞2018/7/20
> In 1942, at age 16, Elizabeth registered with the Labour Exchange –the British employment agency at the time – and was extremely keen to join a division of the women’s armed forces. Her father was reluctant to let her do so, but eventually relented. She got her father to "relent" by threatening to run away and join up under an assumed name. This was their compromise; she still got to serve, but stayed on the island of Britain rather than becoming a kidnapping risk by going to Europe.

It could be dementia. His dad had it by this age and trump isnt exactly a healthy fellow. Or it could be a lifetime of sheltered richboyitus, unchecked narcissism, extreme insecurity, racism, and a propensity for willful ignorance of the world mostly out of sheer, unrivaled, laziness and having his only information stream be fox news.

Thank you. This armchair diagnosis is kind of annoying, even if it's in jest half the time. Some people are just assholes. They are in full control of their actions, and their decisions are not muddied by dementia or Narcissistic Personality Disorder or syphilis. He may, indeed, have one of those things, or something else, but people are so enamored of blaming mental illnesses for every douche that makes the news. Not helping the stigma, and thus, further discouraging people who DO need help (assuming they can afford it). We shouldn't be so quick to let him off the hook in this way. I know that's not the intent behind those comments, but it is an implication.

Women in that time served in non-combat roles, but like others said, the island was being bombed so she wasn't free from danger. As far as I'm concerned, she served to the full extent that her society let her. She even had to fight to get her father's permission to join.
Broken_stoic115 赞2018/7/20
Britain was being bombed quite a lot during the war, so even doing a non combatant job was very important, I’d imagine. Even though she was away from the front lines.
[已删除]56 赞2018/7/20
It was called the Battle for Britain, everybody was involved, of course nobody would send Princess Elizabeth directly to some frontline but there was enough equally important work to do at the home front, many men and women did other important jobs to aide the war effort. Would you like to know more?
She was away from the frontlines and stayed in Britain. However, much of Britain was a warzone due to heavy German bombing. So as an ambulance driver, you can be sure she was still in the thick of it. She served for 3 years during the war, she definitely wasn't just milling around doing the safe jobs.
Lookitsmyvideo37 赞2018/7/20

Queen Elizabeth was allegedly one hell of a driver. She took king Abdullah from Saudi Arabia out for a tour of the estate in 1998 (Surprising already to the king as women were not allowed to drive in SA at the time) and >According to Cowper-Coles, Elizabeth didn’t just drive the SUV, but rapidly whizzed along the estate’s roads as she chatted, prompting Abdullah to become increasingly anxious. >“Through his interpreter, the Crown Prince implored the Queen to slow down and concentrate on the road ahead,” the diplomat said.
