My favourite bit about this is since she learned to drive, later on she would drive and pickup visiting dignitaries herself if they visited her at Balmoral. Quite a shock for Saudi princes/kings to be driven around by a woman.
tranmear1,038 赞2018/7/8
There's a story that when the duke of Edinburgh took unwell at Balmoral and needed to go to hospital rather than calling an ambulance she hopped in the land rover and drove him herself
itsgonnabeanofromme1,156 赞2018/7/8
It’s almost like she’s a normal human being like you & I.
PM-Your-Tiny-Tits403 赞2018/7/8
I don't believe you. I bet she doesn't even fart.
untrustableskeptic447 赞2018/7/8
At her age? It's all or nothing.

Continuous stream of air.
ChadHahn81 赞2018/7/8
We went to visit my great-uncle one time. He was in his 90s. We watched him shuffle across the kitchen floor and as he did he was continuously farting. We said he was jet powered.

What's not normal is having a whole staff of retainers including drivers. In that situation many people wouldn't drive themselves but may prefer to ride as a passenger. Also you may think that servants of the royal family may have a low threshold for calling an ambulance.
radditz_22 赞2018/7/8
>took unwell are you British? Your syntax seems pretty British.

Yeah, I read that she purposely drove like a maniac for King Abdullah.

..and that he doesn't have a drivers licence at all! :D
Demetrius3D69 赞2018/7/8
If a cop wants to see something issued by the government with her picture on it, she can just slip him a pound note.
Sinner_NL_54 赞2018/7/8
I'm not kidding, she doesn't even have a passport. :)
Mahadragon43 赞2018/7/8
When you're "the Queen" you don't need a passport. It's the other way around, you have to show her your credentials when she passes by.
immigrantpatriot75 赞2018/7/8
Get in loser, we’re going to smash the patriarchy.
ammohidemoons954 赞2018/7/8
By c. 1939 you mean c. 1945, then yes. Seeing that Liz would be only 13 in 1939.
OhioMegi332 赞2018/7/8
Yes, this was in the 40s. She was also a Princess, not Queen.
GerardWayNoWay157 赞2018/7/9
I think OP means "when queen was younger" as if I say "young president" I wouldn't think they were president at that age
snoharm17 赞2018/7/9
President follows logically because it's a position held briefly and late in life. You can be a monarch for eighty years.
chochazel92 赞2018/7/8
Exactly. Some sense of history would be nice.

It makes me wonder how much leeway "circa" gives us in general. Maybe the closer the date is to the present, the smaller the room for error is.
TheSuperSax65 赞2018/7/9
Now I’m just picturing someone posting a picture of the D-Day landings to a forum in 2200 with “c. 2000” as the caption.

Rolten720 赞2018/7/8
Did you repost this in response that AskReddit thread where they asked people what post would reach a million upvotes? Someone responded "if the queen died" and others started lamenting about what the front page would turn in to, one of them mentioning someone reposting this exact picture...

She never left the British Isles during the war. She was in the auxiliary territorial service even given an honourary junior commander rank. Still participated as a driver and mechanic as mentioned once she was 18 in the latter years of the war though since in 1939 she would be only 13 years old since she was born in 1926.

No no no, East Asia is our friend and always has been, we have always been at war with Oceania.
Apollo_Krill21 赞2018/7/8
So it's not a real war? Doesn't matter who it is against.
[已删除]76 赞2018/7/8
With no disrespect for the countless people who have lost their lives in the 21st centurary due to war, suggesting that anything we see today is even worthy of being a shadow of ww2, no less equivalent, is frankly insulting to the memory of the war. (With the possible exception of the Syrian people. Who have seen casualties numbers and sufferes a daily inpact of war equivalent.) An entire continent was more or less pulverized into rubble. With large sections of two more joining that. Countries lost 10, 12, plus percent of their populations. (.002% of the us population has died in war since 2000 for comparison) countries mobilized everything and everyone they had because the war was a literal life or deatg struggle. If they lost, the enemy intended to eradicate their peoples very existence. It was a nuclear war. Atomic weapons were used in anger. The only time (and hopefully this stays true for ever) that has ever happened. The people fighting modern wars have very real struggles and grief. And the stakes are high. I hate to seem like i am taking away from that. But the reality is the world went bat shit crazy in the late 30s and the mid 40s. It was a type of total war on a global scale which we will hopefully never see in our life times. The modern world is thankfully a very peaceful place, in comparison to what has come before. And a lot of that is because ww2 was such a traumatic experience for humanity our species global organization was changed specially to prevent that from happening again.
YukiGeorgia41 赞2018/7/8
I think there is a bit of a difference between a minor conflict in Afghanistan which only takes a portion of America's resources and a war more total than you could even imagine.
LargeWaffleIron16 赞2018/7/8
Especially when looking at it from the perspective of the US and not the country in which the fighting is taking place.
scottsmith4618 赞2018/7/8
You can’t Declare war on concepts and objects. The “wars” on drugs and terrorism haven’t done a damn thing to stop either of those
NZsupremacist16 赞2018/7/8
Wow when you put it like that.. Gee so much has happened since then yet so little at the same time. Imagine being Elizabeth's father George VI who served in WW1 only 20 years earlier which was supposed to be the war to end all wars all for it to happen again. Someone check my maths but he would also be 19/20 years old or so in 1914 since George was born in 1895 not that far off Elizabeth's age when WW2 started. Of course since George was second on the list for the throne after his brother he was allowed to go to the front in the new RAF.
mikechella21 赞2018/7/8
The sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the shame The killing, the dying, was all that in vain Oh Willie McBride it all happened again And again, and again, and again, and again
Ultron-v1126 赞2018/7/8
I remember watching a short documentary on YouTube about her, I doubt she was deployed considering she's a royal. But she was extremely eager to help in anyway she could. She's a real class act Edit: I might be wrong so feel free to correct me
colusito37 赞2018/7/8
Wasn't one of the current princes deployed in Afghanistan? I remember him being an helicopter pilot, could be totally wrong though.
251799975 赞2018/7/8
Harry, IIRC; but later pulled out of the field because his presence = media interest = publicized location = dangerous for his platoon.
GBlair8829 赞2018/7/8
Harry was an Apache pilot in Afghanistan. William was also in the military, but not in combat roles.
[已删除]49 赞2018/7/8
Prince William was trying everything he could to actually get deployed when he was a pilot, but the royal family told him it was ultimately out of the question.
Dzdawgz51 赞2018/7/8
But Harry did go twice.
live_wire_57 赞2018/7/8
\*Princess Elizabeth She didn't become queen until 1953, 8 years after world war 2 ended.

ChadHahn49 赞2018/7/8
I read once about how she was on one of her estates and the Land Rover broke down somehow. Elizabeth figured out that if they removed the rear drive shaft, they could put it in 4 wheel drive and make it home using the front drive shaft. She probably wasn't the one who did the actual removing of parts but still whoever she was with was surprised and she said, "I was a mechanic you know."

The Crown on Netflix is very informative about all things involving the Queen. It is also shot very well and it's funny at times. I highly recommend
a6337275055751120 赞2018/7/8
Does Queen Elizabeth look somewhat like Jake Peralta from Brooklyn Nine Nine in this picture?
hoxxxxx17 赞2018/7/9
shameless plug for *The Crown* on Netflix i'm a 30 year old guy from the midwest, never once was interested in anything royal-related. was bored one day and started watching the show -- it's one of the best period pieces i've seen. really reminds me of *Mad Men.* anyway, even if the subject isn't interesting at first, the quality of the show might pull you in and make you a huge fan of the show like i am. can't wait for the next season, it's really cool how they are going to do it. btw i'm pretty sure the guy/crew that did *The Queen* and/or *The King's Speech* are the people making *The Crown*. so if you liked either of those, you'd like it too ninjaedit: i wanna say too, the whole *Mad Men* comparison -- it's similar to it not only in the whole period piece thing (insane attention to detail and all that) but the way the show "flows" or whatever. it's similar to how in Mad Men, you could sum up an episode with something like, "Don meets with a new client. Peggy sees someone new.", but a ton of stuff actually happens in each episode. Where you can't really take your eyes off the screen for too long or you'll miss something important/interesting. The ultimate slow-burn, when it comes to television.

After an post I saw yesterday, my first thought when seeing this pic was "did she kick the bucket and people are fishing for karma already?"

She was in London during the bombings, so that was pretty dangerous. They didn't leave.

My mother, a stay at home farm wife, had my dad, a farmer, feedstore owner, buy a 22 inch Motorola TeeVee in 1953 so that she could watch the coronation of the Queen. My sisters and I got cartoons. I was 8.

Dang, imagine the ladies that actually fought against fascism in ww2 instead of just doing some cool photo ops in front of planes https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Witches These ladies were notorious for their successful tactics. They would fly out in the direction of Nazi positions, in the dead of night, and cut off their engines. This would enable them to descend on their targets (Nazi trenches, usually) and release their bombs at the last moment undetected. At the moment when bombs dropped on their trenches, the Nazis would hear their engines turning on and flying away after annihilating their armies without even being able to respond to the attack with their anti air weapons. Those ladies were bad ass.
