I was just walking around there amazing how many of the buildings have been there since the 30s!

And still, even with the modern buildings surrounding the older buildings, they all seem to still somehow blend together and stay visually appealing. I’m curious, if I wanted to buy a empty plot of land in Manhattan, and build a skyscraper, does the way it *looks* have to be approved or pre-evaluated by important people before I start building it? Because I’m not so sure my particular obscene ideas for my building would exactly *blend in*.
Certain areas are landmarked for conservation so for example around Washington Square Park, you can't exceed certain height restrictions and the appearance has to be approved by like a neighborhood association or board. Same thing for some areas in the village. As far as Midtown Manhattan goes though there are less regulations.
Less regulations for \#MidtownManhattan under my administration means more dollars for real estate developers! Making big changes! \#FakeMainstreamMedia won't report on massive economy increases!
Well an empty plot could be hard to come by lol. But I believe there’s a board that approves all buildings and they are really careful about any that affect the skyline
If that’s actually the case, they failed with 432 Park Ave. It really breaks up the skyline, and sticks out badly. I think it’s one of many proposed ugly Central Park South skyscrapers though. Sigh...progress.

432 is the start of a new skyline. It will soon be joined by Central Park Tower which will absolutely dominate the skyline. I believe it’ll be taller than the Willis (Sears) Tower plus it’s on elevated land. A few other super talls will create a new cluster that will rival Downtown and Midtown though it be a dramatically smaller in scale. Edit: https://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?countryID=2 Yeah, it will be 30 meters taller than Sears Tower and an adjacent super tall will only be 6 meters shorter than the Sears Tower. For reference, 432 Park is 17m shorter. NYC is in another golden age of skyscrapers. It’s crazy, a decade ago the Empire State Building was the tallest tower in NYC by the end of the decade it will be the 7th.
There's so much new construction going on beyond just super tall skyscrapers. Hudson Yards has like 3 new towers almost completed. It's nothing new though, NYC has always been transforming. However, most of the super talls are in or close to Midtown, just below Central Park. There's 2 recently completed towers, at least 10 currently under construction, and 5 more proposals close to completion.
Well, Hudson Yards is the largest infrastructure project in North America and 3 of its towers will be in the top 20 of NYC’s tallest including 30 Hudson Yards which will be taller than the ESB. But it’s not just Manhattan, Brooklyn is getting its first supertall and Long Island City, I mean look at the before and after: https://imgur.com/gallery/S5wTS and that’s since 2014.
Crazy because the first thing I noticed about the park is that there's barely any tall trees.
I lived near central park for most of my childhood, and it looks so different nowadays - just because of some plants.
Fun Fact: Donald Trump was the owner of the Plaza Hotel (real name eludes me and hence his cameo) while filming Home Alone 2. For the scene where Kevin slides underneath the concierge staff's legs, the carpet from the lobby had to be removed. Donald Trump liked it better that way and kept it after filming had finished.
ELI5 how to realise this pic in 1933 without photoshop, filters and hdr

either the trees have grown or the buildings shrunk, cuz you sure as hell can't see those buildings anymore.

Does anyone have a picture from our days for comparison

Those buildings must have seemed like castles to people from outside of the city. We take large buildings for granted now but at that time this must have truly blown some peoples minds
I'm always surprised how much was able to get done in terms of architecture and engineering 100 years ago without the technology we have today, or even 20 years ago.
