I remember a Paul McCartney interview on Stephen Colbert where Paul basically said "I still wake up some days and think it was all a dream or something". Unless you're insanely egotistical, that level of fame would at some point start to feel surreal.
McCartney says that all the time. "We were just really really lucky. We were just at the right place at the right time" stuff like that. He thinks they wrote good music, but he also thinks a lot of other people at the same time were to, and the Beatles just took off and sucked all the air out of the room. If you watch that Ron Howard documentary about their touring, the reporters talk about how bad the Beatles felt for their opening acts, because the kids didn't even listen to them, they just shouted over them until the Beatles came on. So the whole band would hang out with their opening acts on the buss apologizing for how dumb and unfair it all was.
Do you happen to know what that documentary is called or have a link to it? Sounds really interesting and I would definitely like to check it out, thanks!

It wasn't just the screaming. At the time no company was really making stage amplification needed for the size of the venues the beatles were playing, so they couldn't hear themselves play, or what the others were playing. It is a long told story, maybe true maybe not, that at some shows it was so loud that they just faked most of what they played, aside from vocals going through the P.A. and no one knew any different.
Obviously the 60s had its share of audiophiles and actual music fans, but yeah, it would be a but annoying to be writing great songs and just having starstruck teens screaming and missing out on the fruit of your diligent labors. Granted, I'm sure there are also benefits to being in the most popular band of all time.
> "We were just really really lucky. We were just at the right place at the right time" I think that's true about that level of fame. I mean, if 5% of the U.S. population knows who you are that's what 16 million people, twice the population of NYC, and think about how many random people know who the Beatles are even if they don't like them. Or Elvis or Michael Jackson. They're all talented but that's not the kind of fame you earn from talent, it's just a fucking fluke at that point, a surreal joke that life is playing on you.
You don't need to be famous to have that kind of impact on people. It certainly helps, but a good deed goes a long way, too! I still remember kind things strangers have done for me now and then.
Wow. Hope you don't mind, I think I'll take part in your mission. Awesome.

Had two acquaintances tell me separately yesterday how I've positively impacted their lives just going about my own business, and thinking of how I hardly ever see either of them but knowing I've helped them both stunned me into silence. It's really crazy how far the smallest amount of kindness goes to change someone's outlook. I decided last to make a point of trying to make every interaction I have worthwhile and it seriously warms me to witness this shift in your mindset even though you're a complete stranger.
>the Beatles and Rolling Stones created every day I used to date a girl whose mother confided in me, one fine afternoon, that when she was 17 she'd blown Mick Jagger in a tour bus after a concert. So I guess that counts as two. One for her and one really rather awkward one for me.
"Ah yes, on a fine crisp autumn afternoon like today I was a mere lass with one of the decade's most famous cocks in my mouth. Anyway, I hope you're enjoying dating my daughter."
My time to shine I guess. My parents used to be friends with Bebe Buell, a former playboy bunny, groupie for the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith and mother of Steven Tyler’s daughter Liv Tyler (she was one of the inspirations for “Almost Famous”. They babysat Liv Tyler for years as they were Bebe and Tod Rundgren’s neighbors in Maine. They were pretty close and Bebe still keeps one of my moms paintings in her home. The stories they tell of those days are insane, they refused to tell me them until I was 20 lol.
I knew Steven Tyler when I was in high school, but I only just recently discovered this. I knew him by his real name. I watched him play drums before the Yardbirds came out and blew our minds, and got to know the photographer, who turned out to be Linda Eastman. We never know as kids who either we, or our friends will become. There are many more people I knew in high school and college who later became rather famous.

If I were born roughly six months earlier than I was, there would be sufficient reason to believe that I am the bastard child of "Potsie" from "Happy Days". The story goes like this: My mom grew up with some people who ended up being pretty big radio DJs in Cincinnati. Well, in '86 she got some vip seats at a concert through her dj friend. She went with her friend, we'll call her Sally, to the concert, and as they get settled in in the vip area, Sally leans in and says "Oh my god, that's Potsie! I'm going to go talk to him." So they walk over and Sally gets Potsie's attention, talks to him for a few seconds before my mom hears Potsie say to Sally "Hey, does your friend like to party?" ...Now, my MOM says she did not party with Potsie, but to hear my dad talk, mom liked to party.

To be fair, Jones was the engine Stones in the early days. No, he didn't write their hits, but he did write to the paper when they got a bad review; no, he didn't "get" the musical artistry Jagge were blossoming into, but he did push the band to vary its instrumentation and production techniques to keep up with the speedy development of 60s rock. This experimentation gave us 'Paint It, Black' but also gave us *Their Satanic Majesties Request* which is... not great. But it did set the stage for *Beggars Banquet*, perhaps the biggest comeback album of the decade (which is saying something considering it was the 60s).
In the same book Keith also says that Brian beat his then girlfriend Anita up so much that she ditched him and went off with Richards to Morocco. Jones was basically a shell of his former self before he died, completely engulfed in psychedelics and not even caring about the well being of others, let alone his own.
Syd Barrett too. Like Alan Watts says about psychedelics, "when you get the message, hang up the phone".
dave_89097 赞2018/2/18
> Syd Barrett too. No, Syd was a legitimate schizophrenic all his adult life. Onset around age 20 is fairly common, which is when it hit him. It didn't help that he was doing a lot of LSD, but LSD wasn't the *cause* of his mental illness. He had some lucid periods over the years, and even put out a few solo albums during those times.
The band always acknowledged that he was sick rather than driven insane by LSD. Admittedly, he would drop a ludicrous amount of acid, even by 60's rock star standards, and would try, and fail, to play gigs while fried out of his mind. They didn't even kick him out because he was a dick, he just couldn't perform while tripping and it just so happens that he would trip every day. Addiction would be a weird thing to assume about LSD consumption, so my educated guess from my experiences with the drug is that Syd found a place where he felt saner, which ironically accentuated his illness. Pink Floyd kicked out Syd Barrett so that he could get help without being pressured to perform, which he eventually did but the damage had been done by then and he never was the same. One of the saddest story in music history if you ask me, especially with the cultural impact of Wish You Were Here.
I also like what Carl Jung (I think it was) said regarding psychedelic revelation: "Beware of wisdom you haven't earned"
The ability to play an instrument doesn't make you able to write a song, much less a good one. Some people have good fingers for music, others have good ears for music. The latter are the song writers, the former tend to just make the song BETTER.
Some of that was Keith being jealous. Brian was miles ahead of him in musicianship, and was considering joining the Beatles at his death. John wanted him in. That's Brian playing tuba on "You know my name look up the number". He also played on the Beatles outtake "What a shame Mary Jane had a pain at the party".
Brian 在《You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)》里吹的就是大号。他还在披头士的遗珠《What a Shame Mary Jane Had a Pain at the Party》里演奏过。

A few years after he founded the Rolling Stones as a British blues outfit in 1962, and gave the band its name, Jones' fellow band members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards began to take over the band's musical direction, especially after they became a successful songwriting team. Jones also did not get along with the band's manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, who pushed the band into a musical direction at odds with Jones's blues background. At the same time, Jones developed a drug problem, and his performance in the studio became increasingly unreliable, leading to a diminished role within the band he founded. The Rolling Stones asked Jones to leave in June 1969 and guitarist Mick Taylor took his place in the group. Jones died less than a month later by drowning in the swimming pool at his home while under the influence of drugs

I used to work at a telephone sales office in south florida and there was a guy there named larry. One day I walked outside to smoke a cigarette and Larry was talking to someone on the phone about a house in Jamica. When he got off the phone I asked him what that was about and he said it was Keith Richards asking him to go check on his house in Jamica. I was like yup whatever dude. He was an old weirdo so I though maybe he was senile. Well as it turned out one day larry brought a photo album to the office and sure enough there were pictures with him back stage with keith, jerry lee lewis, david bowie yada yada yada. He used to tell us all kinds of stories of partying with Rockstars and even said he slept with Daryl Hannah once. His explanation was everybody was fucking everybody back then man. He casually told me over lunch that he had murdered somebody once and buried them in the desert. It was fuckign crazy the shit that would come out of his mouth. (Come to think of it he reminds me of Del Preston from Waynes World 2) I never figured out what all that was about or how he was connected like that until I got locked up 10 years later. My girlfriend sent me the keith richards bio. It was crazy seeing Larry's fucking name in Keith Richards autobiography. Apparently Larry is the son of Freddie Sessler who was a very good friend of Richard. Matter of fact when Keiths ex wife/girl shot some kid in Europe Larry was the person Keith sent to sort that mess out. Anyway it was just a cool experience to spend time so casually with someone who was a part of rockstar lore. Last I heard Larry had since passed .

I had a Larry too (I don't mean that figuratively, he was also named Larry). He had one of the biggest private Beatles collections, probably in the world, in his attic. He lived in a small bumblefuck town in the middle of nowhere (it was almost like that Simpsons episode where Bart and Milhouse discover Flanders' secret Beatles stash). Local news wanted to cover his collection but he turned them down because he didn't want to attract attention to himself. I thought a lot of the stories he told me were made up--until he showed me Pete Best's (Beatles drummer before Ringo) personal Christmas cards to him. He sent one to Larry every year. He also had a ~~Liverputian~~Liverpudlian friend who had been active in the Merseybeat scene back in the late-1950s/early-1960s. The friend personally knew the Beatles and ran in their circle and also had a connection to the Small Faces and (although years later) Oasis. I jammed with him with Larry a couple times when I was a teenager...in the basement of this dilapidated music store. In the middle of nowhere USA. Larry had a lot of crazy stories and cool shit...like talking to Olivia Harrison on the phone after George died or chilling with Julian Lennon at a bar in Minnesota. You'd never know though if you knew him in passing or only saw his house from the outside.

It’s amazing how similar Mick Jagger and Harry from One Direction look.

That amazing! My mom had a similar hidden life (hidden in the sense that when I was a kid I didn't pay attention) and wrote for several small newspapers across Canada generally covering the music scene. She had Herbie Hancock over for dinner and I missed it, too busy smoking dope with my buddies in the woods. She was invited to see and interview Prince at a very small personal venue when he was in Montreal for the Jazz Fest, she couldn't make it but didn't give me the pass because she didn't know I fucking idolized Prince. Goddamit mom. In the end it turns out she cheated on my dad with a well known Montreal jazz musician. I might be Prince's son. Well no, I mean I wish, jeez. I'm so white though.

I find it so sad that she lived her life knowing this was true but none of her family believed her! What a story for The Big Bar In The Sky.
