Was tattooing social security numbers common place in the past?

Yes, especially for military personnel pre-WW2. [Here’s a blog that mentions this picture.](http://blog.nyhistory.org/tattoo-as-memory-prompt/) Edit: blog, not article

Can confirm. My boss was in the army in the mid 60's IIRC. He's told me how back then your serial number was your social security number and they put it on all your gear. Specifically in this case, the back of the pack you were wearing when standing in formation. He can still remember the social of one guy to this day, he ran across him in public after being out of the service for a number of years and shouted out his number to get his attention. Guy demanded to know how he knew his social, to which he replied, "dumbass, I stood behind you for x-amount of years in the army".

Not anymore. At least the US Army is replacing SS numbers with DoD numbers on everything.

That makes sense cause... Army. I constantly had to pull out my ID during de-mob cause that’s all they were asking for. Same when I hit ETS. I wonder if ds’s make em memorize it now or still going off ss#

Not to nitpick, however SSNs are only used for medical anymore. Everyone else uses your 10 digit EDIPI which is a service number, not SSN. But yeah. Mark it unless you want to lose it.

Using the last 4 is still common. In boot camp we write the last 4 on all of our gear and cloths.

I was in from 97-14 I have it tattooed on my feet and under my arms. After 04 tour and had to try and identify body parts and realized they try. But mostly try to make sure everyone has 2 of each. I figured I would help them out. My whole squad had last 4 wrote on the back of their boots. Oh the crazy shit! We do! Cue the other crazy shit vets did in Iraq and Afghanistan to follow. Bullets on dog chains. Pre wrote letters. The list is long and weird.

[This is Thomas Urs Cave in 1938.](image) He was born on July 2, 1912 and died June 4, 1980. He was a Sergeant in WWII. His wife's name was Ann Kathryn Cave. She was born in January 23, 1916 and died on February 18, 2000. They are both buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR. **Edit** - Okay so some new information: He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and his status at that time was "Divorced." He later remarried Ann Kathryn, so the woman in that photo isn't Ann Kathryn. It's actually his first wife, Vivian, whom he was still married to in 1940. The woman in this photo is Vivian. **Edit 2** - So, per census records he was living in Shasta, OR in 1940 and was a truck driver with an 8th grade education. Vivian was a fruit picker on a farm. Thomas and Ann (his second wife) had a daughter Juanita on September 13, 1949. Why that's interesting is because census records have a Tillman T.U. Cave (T.U. for Thomas Urs) and his sister Juanita with their parents Tillman B and Sarah N Cave in a farm in Buckham, OR. There's a 1940 census record for Benjamin T (Tillman B aka Thomas' father) and Sadie N Cave in Buckham, OR in 1918 with a WW1 draft registration for Tillman B. Then a 1930 census record for them in Los Angeles, CA, then a 1940 census record for them in Portland. So basically, Thomas' father Benjamin lived in Buckham, OR where he was registered for the WW1 draft and moved his family in 1930 to Los Angeles (possibly due to the Great Depression and searching for work), but by 1940 they had moved back to Oregon. The reason we think Tillman B is Thomas' father is because there's a 1934 marriage record of a Tillman T.U. Cave to a Vivian Couture, witnessed by Benjamin Cave and Sadie Cave in Multnomah County, OR. So Benjamin and Sadie (Sarah) are almost 100% his parents and he named his daughter with Ann (Wife #2) after his sister, Juanita. **Edit 3** - So I'm more interested in Vivian, because less is known of her and she looks drop dead beautiful in this photo. She was born on October 28, 1912 to Joseph Henri Couture and Grace Maude Couture in Amrstrong, British Columbia Canada. She was married 3 times, lastly to Virgil Loghry and died in January 1986. She has one known child to her second husband, whose name isn't known. **Edit 4** - A tragic story from a local Washington state newspaper: >May 4, 1952 issue: "Kelso Grid Star Dies in Collision". It reads: >KELSO, Wash. May 3 (AP) - Richard "Rip" Raappana, 24, well-known southwest Washington athlete, was killed early Saturday. His automobile swerved into a Consolidated Freightways truck and trailer a mile north of here on the Pacific Highway, the state patrol reported. >Louise N. Robinson, 21, Longview, a passenger in his car, was injured critically. >The state patrol said the truck driver was *Thomas U. Cave, 39, of Portland.* >Raappana was an all-round athlete at Kelso high. He played college football for Eastern Washington college at Cheney and last fall was with the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. **Edit 5** - [Here's a second picture from Lange's negatives.](https://www.loc.gov/item/fsa2000004067/PP/) Vivian is seen smoking in the background. **Edit 6** - Thomas Cave's enlistment has him at 5'6" and 156lbs. He served in the Army from November 12, 1942 to February 4, 1946.

A resident of Klamath Falls, Ore., Thomas U. Cave and his wife had fallen on hard times when Lange encountered them. That year, they had collectively worked a total of 52 weeks and earned $550. The couple was the only household who rented a small flat on Frieda Avenue ($12 a month). And now Thomas Cave found himself without a job. They were both twenty-seven at the time.

This is a pretty famous photo that’s made several rounds on Reddit and Facebook so they might know by now. It must be strange to see a famous picture of grandpa/great grandpa so physically fit and with his ex-wife. If anything, I’d like to request more pictures of him!

It took me awhile to understand the relationship between all of them, but I think I got it. Tillman "Thomas" Urs Cave grew up on a farm with his sister, Juanita, and parents, Tillman "Benjamin" Cave, and Sarah "Sadie" Cave, in Buckham, Oregon. Sometime between 1918 and 1930, his parents (and maybe him and his sister?) moved to LA. Sometime before 1939 (perhaps early 30s), the Cave family moved back to Oregon and Thomas apparently worked as a lumberjack after that. In 1934, Thomas then got married to his first wife, Vivian. In 1940, Thomas was working as a trucker. He had divorced Vivian by the time he registered for WWII in 1942. He returned from service in 1946 and would eventually marry his second wife, Ann, and later have a daughter, Juanita, in 1949. In 1952, Thomas lived in Portland and was involved in a fatal car accident while he was trucking. He died in 1980. Does that sound right?

Juanita is an interesting name for the daughter of a Thomas and an Ann. Were either of them Hispanic?
More likely spaniard. There were quite a few spaniards who emigrated to the US who changed their last name in the early 20th century because they didn't want to be associated with hispanics.

It's her face that draws me in to this picture. If he is 27, that would put her likely close to the same age. She's close to my age. Following along with your husband, who is out of work, trying to make enough of a living to keep your life together. She looks tired. She looks worn down by life and circumstance and the world around her. He has a glimpse of a smile, he's optimistic. Or maybe just posing for the camera. She looks like she just doesn't know what to do. She looks like there are a million things she'd rather do, and that this wasn't the life she thought she would have (especially if she was a young adult/teen in the 20s). We know about him, but I wonder about her.
Are we projecting in this thread? Now that you mention it his face totally looks like he just got a 4 piece on rainbow 6. While she looks like she's waiting for her turn to play Monster hunter.
abbie_yoyo51 赞2018/2/4
What? No, not at all. In this photo she clearly looks like my dad never hugged me, that's all. Geez, over-analyze much?
She almost has a sneer. Maybe she resents that someone is coming to photograph them. She isn't pessimistic about her life but doesn't want someone gawking at their misfortune/poverty either. This photo may have embarrassed her or offended her sense of pride.

Lol someone else commented that her legs looks hairy. I’m guessing if she didnt shave (which would have made sense) it’s possible that the editing with the colors didn’t pick up on it due to the images natural low quality OR, she has very fine body hair, which in my experience is quite a lot of women. Seriously. I have to shave every 2-3 days if I want to maintain smooth legs (dark thick hair + sensitive skin also means constant rashes lol), most of my friends shave a few times a MONTH because they aren’t half Chewbacca like apparently I am lol.
abbie_yoyo18 赞2018/2/4
I feel your pain. I'm a fully matured male and I have very little body hair at all. Like only a suggestion of extra fine fuzz on my arms, leg hair stops completely at the knee, and I have maybe 20 chest hairs. Oh, but a receding hairline, because why not. Words can't describe how cheated I feel.
