[More from me](http://www.marinamaral.com) || [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/pg/marinamaralarts) || [Instagram](http://www.instagram.com/marinaarts) __________ [**PRINTS**](https://www.redbubble.com/people/marinamaral) _________ Michel Marcel Navratil, Jr. (12 June 1908 – 30 January 2001) was one of the last survivors of the sinking of Titanic on 15 April 1912. He, along with his brother, Edmond (1910–1953), were known as the "Titanic Orphans". They were born in Nice, France. The brothers boarded the Titanic at Southampton with their father, Michel. The family was traveling under the assumed name of Hoffman, Mr Navratil had stolen his two sons from his estranged wife Marcelle. During the voyage the boys were looked after once by Bertha Lehmann, a Swiss girl who spoke French but no English, while their father played cards for a few hours. It was the only time he let them out of his sight. After the collision with the iceberg at 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912, Navratil placed Michel and Edmond in Collapsible D, the last lifeboat successfully launched from the ship. Michel, although not quite four years old at the time, later claimed to remember his father telling him, "My child, when your mother comes for you, as she surely will, tell her that I loved her dearly and still do. Tell her I expected her to follow us, so that we might all live happily together in the peace and freedom of the New World." The elder Navratil died in the sinking, and his body was recovered by the rescue ship, Mackay-Bennett. In his pocket was a revolver. Because of his assumed Jewish surname, he was buried in Baron de Hirsch Cemetery, Halifax, a Jewish cemetery in Nova Scotia. Aboard the rescue ship Carpathia, the boys, unable to speak English, were dubbed the Orphans of the Titanic, when they turned out to be the only children who remained unclaimed by an adult. First Class survivor, Miss Margaret Hays agreed to care for the boys at her New York home (304 West 83rd Street) until family members could be contacted. Marcelle Navratil, recognized her boys from newspaper stories and was brought over to America by the White Star Line where she was reunited with her sons on May 16. The three sailed back to France on the Oceanic. In later life Edmond worked as an interior decorator and then became an architect and builder. He was married. During World War II he fought with the French Army, was captured and made a prisoner-of-war. He managed to escape from the camp in which he was held, but his health had suffered and he died in the early 1950s aged 43. Michel attended college and in 1933 married a fellow student. He went on to earn a doctorate and became a professor of philosophy. Throughout his life, he maintained that his brush with death at such a young age, coupled with the loss of his father, strongly influenced his thought processes. Michel lived the remainder of his life in Montpellier, France. He died on 30 January 2001, at the age of 92 and was preceded in death by his mother and brother.

better than Germany or Russia

This picture is so cute yet so sad under the circumstances. Then it's incredible to hear the life story after this and how different life was for one brother verses the other. Humans can be so resilient yet life can be so cruel at times.

Wow what an amazing story. I hope this century is far less "interesting".

Hey lady your kids almost died on a cross Atlantic boat ride, oh ya and their father definately did. Hop on a boat just like then and come to America, then we will send you guys back on another boat. Watch out for ice.
kobitz390 赞2017/12/15
Jesus can you imagine if they *hadn’t* survived? Their mother would have lived out the rest of her days not knowing what happened to her sons, though I suppose she would have guessed her asshole husband had something to do with it ("She allowed them to stay with their father over the Easter weekend; however, when she went to collect them, they had disappeared. Michel had decided to immigrate to the United States, taking the boys with him") Literaly every mothers worst nightmare
MadHiggins65 赞2017/12/15
the sad thing is stuff like this was fairly common back then and the other parent would simply never know the fate of their children, whisked away by a bitter ex husband/wife. "kidnappings" where the estranged parent takes the children still happens even today

Shit, I just realized that given the conditions of their boarding, they would have just vanished. At least from her perspective. I can't imagine what that's like, I fear that more than anything. Loving someone that's just gone one day, disappeared.

More over, one of the boys claims his father told them, as he was putting them on the life boat: "My child, when your mother comes for you, as she surely will, tell her that I loved her dearly and still do. Tell her I expected her to follow us, so that we might all live happily together in the peace and freedom of the New World." Without any sort of identification papers (they were travelling under false names) or even telling anyone on the boat how to contact this mother. Bit of a mixed message there

To be fair there is no way the kid remembered his dad saying that sentence.

It would be terrifying to have to get on an ocean liner to rescue your children after losing your husband to a sinking ship and nearly your kids too. Of course I'd do it in a heartbeat, but you know she had to be afraid during the journey. It would be in the back of my mind the entire trip... "what if it happens again, my children will be orphans for real" and all that. And being a kid and having to get back on another boat to go home after surviving the Titanic? Eesh. I'd be worried for sure. It's good he got to live out a long life after all that.

Another history fact: Miss Hayes is the wife of Charles Melville Hayes, president of the Grand Trunk Railway. He went to England to ask for a loan to save his company and met a friend, Joseph Bruce Ismay, president of the White Star Line, who offered him a cabin on one of his newest ship. He's an incredible man, and I think there's a mention of him in the exhibit at the Reagan museum. They received the pocket watch he carried when he drowned, I know the canadian curator who was tasked to carry it to the US.

Holy shit I want a mini series on their lives
Raph_E19 赞2017/12/15
That guy lived long enough to watch the Titanic movie. I wonder what he thought about that.
CollectableRat69 赞2017/12/15
Lightoller made those kids orphans when he didn't let more men sit in the 23 empty seats that were still left on Collapsible D when it launched. It was strong enough for full capacity, rated for 47 adult men, and the creaking of the wood under the 24 passengers that were on it was normal.

Insane how much the younger brother lived through. He witnessed two World Wars, the moon landing, the birth of the Internet and more. I wonder what major events will happen in the next 50 years?
MadHiggins15 赞2017/12/15
in 40 years, the US might even regain its common sense internet laws!

The Dad took off with them under a fake name, Mom recognized them in the newspaper and they reunited and went home with her. The younger one died in 2001 at the age of 92.

tejaco79 赞2017/12/15
Imagine how she felt. First she realizes her children are missing. Then maybe she suspects her husband took them on, OMG, the Titanic, which just f---ing sunk. Then somehow she learns about the "orphans." She gets to be reunited with them with no husband in the way. Oh right, he died, how sad. But her babies are *alive.*
Kraz_I78 赞2017/12/15
Read the top comment. Their mother was not on the Titanic as they had been abducted by their father. She regained custody several months later once authorities had managed to track her down.
Apatomoose15 赞2017/12/15
According to the [story OP posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/ColorizedHistory/comments/7jv2z5/titanic_orphans_brothers_michel_and_edmond/dr9e9ed/), their parents were estranged and their mom was back in France.

I wonder when and why soft toys became less resemblant of the animals they're supposed to be. Old toys look more lifelike whereas nowadays they're like cute cartoon versions.
Yuiiiiiii20 赞2017/12/15
Plenty of older stuffed animals looked cartoonish and plenty of modern stuffed animals look lifelike though. I had a stuffed cat that looked very similar to that one but brown

My 18 month old son has a stuffed tiger he likes to carry around. The cat Edmond is holding reminds me of it and makes me imagine my kid alone in a situation like that with nothing but his tiger for comfort. :(

Kid on the right looks like the inspiration to be a Cabbage Patch doll.

Survive the sinking of the Titantic, fight in the second World War only to be captured and sent to a POW camp, then escape said camp. What a life story, my goodness.

I’m honestly amazed they were the *only* children not to be claimed during the recovery process.

I volunteered at a nursing home when I was in high school, and one of the residents was a Titanic survivor; He was four at the time it sank. Can't remember his name, but I'd like to think one of these is him...
CommissionerOdo11 赞2017/12/15

A bit of good news: their mother was not on the Titanic. They were reunited not long after this photo. Michel, on the left, lived to be 92, passing away in 2001. His brother Edmond died in 1953, at the age of 43. He fought for France in WWII, and was at one point a prisoner of war.

Titanic (1997) 02:28:03 Please, I have a child. Time - Phrase 02:27:58 - (Child Crying) - I have a child. 02:28:01 - Cal: I have a child. - Clear a path here. 02:28:03 Please, I have a child. 02:28:06 Please, I'm all she has in the world. 02:28:09 Go on. Step back, step back, I say.

They don't look that overweight. Why must we push unrealistic body standards on dead children? Calling them titanic is just rude.
