Yeah, that's pretty much what he did in Telluride. Fired up the biggest Tesla coil he could build with the research investment, crack off a full sized lightning bolt, and melt down the municipal power supply. No question, he had the most extreme powers of invention and visualization, and he was a inexhaustible technician and laboratory experimenter. But if he had set the Earth magnetic field into resonant vibration, every trace in every computer board would be generating it's own power, and the digital age would probably never have been possible. He did not believe in electrons.

>But if he had set the Earth magnetic field into resonant vibration What do you mean by that?
He wanted to maintain a tuned sequence of powerful electrical impulses into the ground to cause a sustained resonant vibration in the Earths electromagnetic field. Once you got it going it could be sustained with a comparably small (still pretty big) amount of power fired as pulses to keep it going. edit: Think of little timed pushes keeping a big swing-set swinging. Then anyone with a stretched wire anywhere on the planet could get "free" power for their electric lights and motors. Downside is every stretched wire on Earth generates some power. That plan would have also run into the "tragedy of the commons" effect, where anyone could set up a massive power sink to convert the un-metered electrical supply into products for sale that would otherwise be uneconomical. Like making diamonds out of carbon. Those kinds of operations would have dampened the resonant vibration in unpredictable ways, and required that someone somewhere keep feeding the beast.

Destitute as he was due to his very poor money handling skill, lack of business acumen and profligate spending (he was eating out at the waldorf Astoria like it was a diner), Tesla was not really in deep distress. Samuel Westinghouse was taking care of him, paying for his rent at the new Yorker hotel (which was quite fancy at the time) and other expenses, in gratitude to Tesla for waiving the royalty on him.

Your existence, and the existence of actors and entertainers, is far more important than you make it out to be. People need entertainment ... and people need people, too, for that matter. Although most of us really are ultimately easily replacable, it doesn't mean we are worthless and don't mean anything. We all matter. We should all believe that our fellow human beings has a fundamental value in this world. I don't view people's worth based exclusively on what great feats they've accomplished.

Definitely a meme. Social isolation can definitely lead to a weird sense of humor and more metaphorical thinking Referring to an animal you see and feed regularly as your 'wife' falls under that. I'm not saying he wasn't a troubled guy, I just don't buy the literal interpretation that he literally thought the pigeon was his wife. All it really meant is he had a connection with it, which isn't that weird at all.

All of his patents and "patent wrappers" (the correspondence pertaining to the patents) is available from the USPTO, for a fee, in paper form. What did get nabbed up was his body, immediately after death and without any medical examination, by the agents of the Serbian embassy. One theory is it was done to protect the legacy of a Serbian hero, and to keep private some kind of self-mutilation that was evident, and may have occurred in Tesla's teens just before he left for America, perhaps in penance and out of guilt for having killed his older brother when Tesla was just a toddler. (By leading a horse down the cellar stair above where his brother was playing.)

The truth of the matter is that while Tesla did have many important patents and moved electrical engineering forwards massively, but he was a bit player at the time. Without Westinghouse no one would know who he is. Edison was the Steve Jobs of his time. The gilded age has so many direct parallels to our time, especially the patent wars over light bulbs and power distribution systems. And now HVDC is the future of power transmission. ~~A bit less efficient, but~~ far more robust. Turns out Edison might have been right on accident. Those interested in gilded age history, the patent wars over the light bulb, just role what Edison, Tesla, and Westinghouse played should check out the book "Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, and the Race to Electrify the World," and no I am not the author. I just really enjoyed the presentation of the material without out all the Tesla circle jerking.

It's mostly a myth. There's no proof that they quarreled even. Tesla had some grand ideas that couldn't be executed on. Edison was good at business execution. It's like Ford, who didn't invent the car, he figured out ways to bring it to the masses. He still was a Nazi fuck tho. In this world the latter well always win. Personally I think that's a good thing...

This image is misleading... Nikola Tesla did not die poor and alone, nor was he forgotten. Since 1936 until his death he received a substantial monthly compensations from King Pavle Karadjordevic of Yugoslavia. He was also awarded the medal of "White Eagle of the first degree" awarded only to a few selected people who did something extraordinary for the state or the crown. Until the end of his life, he didn't have to worry about his financial situation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla#Living_circumstances Doesn't sound too misleading to me. He definitely did not end his life happy, that's for sure. You don't board your self up in a hotel room and feed pigeons as your hobby in old age if your are a happy person. The maid found him in his hotel room dead, two days later, with a do not disturb sign on the door. I'd call that alone.
That was his choice. He did not like being disturbed, he didn't have friends by his choice, and he chose to live in the hotel. He didn't have any children, no wife (tho he was very sought after as a bachelor)... What else could you expect? He deemed people not worthy to waste time on really. Combination of all of that, his very old age, the world changing around him must have hit him hard, but that's life for you.

> The maid found him in his hotel room dead, two days later, with a do not disturb sign on the door. Did they arrest the pigeon?

I love Tesla. The more I read about that man, the more I think of him as an amazing soul and mind way ahead of his time, an individual that loved to play with ideas and the prospects of reality that was yet to be discovered or is still to be descovered. And no matter how much you read about him, he still stays a mystery. It really makes me sad to see this photo knowing of the situation he was in in his late years and time of death. His eyes are so sad and exhausted and I only whish to have had a chance to meet him and talk to him, just listen and try to understand a mind so unique.

Nikola tesla, overshadowed by thomas Edison, died, ironically, with his head the shape of a lightbulb.
Wakka_bot30 赞2017/11/5
Pretty sure he was only overshadowed while alive. Nowadays we respect him more than edison.

people like him seem to add credence to the idea of simulation theory. It's like every century or so we earn a few loot boxes of brilliant forward minds that literally change our species forever. Like for every five hundred million people we get someone who was worth the inane, pointlessness of most of our lives.

dunno if reddit really counts as common parlance, though.

> Like for every five hundred million people we get someone who was worth the inane, pointlessness of most of our lives. Reminds me of what Stephen Jay Gould said about the analysis of Einstein's brain post-mortem: “I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”

The point is to enjoy it and, if you want to be a good member of your species, to help future generations by leaving the world a little better than you found it. We’re just star farts that became sentient. Don’t over think it. Don’t ruin it for everyone else by being a bad person, enjoy it while it lasts

ehhh if we're in a simulation it's degrading pretty rapidly right now. maybe they ran out of space and are starting to use lossy compression

He’d be a BILLIONAIRE in the 90s if he had patented his inventions but he dint cuz he wasn’t greedy and just wanted the world to be a better place to live! (And he calculated the natural frequency of the earth way back then, scientists today still cannot precisely determine). That’s the kind of genius he was!! Huge respect to Nikola Tesla _/\_

My mom lives near where his shop was in colorado springs. The people who live on the spot have asked media to not release the address anymore because all kinds of cosmic hippies and strange folks would show up at the door or be found in the back yard doing their conspiracy theory or energy stuff or whatever.
