My kids school called to say that due to the eclipse they are on an "inclement weather schedule and kids will not be going outside today". Well, my kid won't be going to school until after lunch then.. I get it, no eclipse glasses to go around and all, but damn, it's like you think they might have them ordered for the kids being a historic scientific event that only happens so often.

I totally understand why. Definitely don't want kids going blind on the school's watch. Odd that I recall being in school and viewing partial eclipse with paper plates with pin holes that we made in school. Oh how the times have changed.

We get more than a 4% change in light many times a day due to cloud coverage changing. It wouldn't even be noticable. I didn't experience the 1999 eclipse either due to the clouds.

If I were to have a station that broadcasted people punching babies 24/7, people would likely believe that baby punching is a huge worry. If the news is broadcasting wars, famine, evil, and pain 24/7, of course we'd believe the world is at it's worst now. The truth is the world is better and safer now than it's ever been. It will keep getting better. We may very well be the last generation to know what famine is. But it's more profitable for the media to play into people's fear. After Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, the media played into people's fear for months. Many people were scared that their flight might go missing even though the odds of any real issue are stupid low. Bad things are happening now, sure. But slowly we're getting better. Global warming is our biggest fear now, but people forget that just ten years ago, the majority of Americans didn't believe it was real.

It's a welcome change from 1979. The context of his statement was two superpowers aiming weapons at each other that could destroy the entire planet multiple times over. Not even twenty years earlier, the doomsday scenario was narrowly avoided by a hair-trigger in Cuba. Today, we fight proxy wars doing our damndest to avoid civilian casualties. It's a humongous improvement.

For all those who are saying that the world is not at peace you are correct but did you know that it is more peaceful now on average than it has been in the last 200 years? Communication speed and media scare tactics are the only reason it seems so much worse now.
