How many Londoners did your V2s kill Wernher?
(Wernher)?
Less than the number of people who died during the production of V2s.

What's the deal with him? Do people think he worked with the Nazi's just as it was the only way to do what he did or was he a genuine pro-Nazi? Genuinely just curious! I'm British, so.. not an immediate fan of Mr. V2.
He does appear to have a model V2 in his office in this photo (second from left), I don't think he's feeling that ashamed of his work.

If you are referring to the January 1945 incident, that was ordered by the SS who were in charge of the Mittelwerk then, and the prisoners were accused of sabotage.

Von Braun was in the SS though

I think he didn't care about trivial stuff like ethics or politics as long as he could make rockets.

Was about to say he’s missing the V2 but it’s the second one from the left if I’m not mistaken

Indeed. He never hid it. Walt Disney even introduced him as the V2 designer when he appeared on his tv show in the 1950's.

Call him a nazi he won’t even frown. Nazi shmazi says Werher Von Braun

I think he worked with some political leader in Europe, and he used his work to try and achieve objectives for said leader.

I don't think he actually did that. The V-2 was a massive waste and a drain on resources, it killed a lot more slaves building it than it killed people in Britain, and it was so inaccurate it was useless as a weapon. At the same time, in the bloodbowl of Nazi internal politics, he was doing his honest best to fuck over all the other liquid rocketry programs, including the AA missiles that would have been about infinity times more useful for the Nazis than a shitty terror bombing rocket. von Braun didn't work to advance anyone's aims but himself, and so far as he got to build rockets, he genuinely didn't care who he fucked over, whether that was the slaves building his rockets, the Nazi state, his friends and colleagues in Germany, or whoever else got in his way. As far as I can tell, he was a complete amoral sociopath.

My grandfather met him working in the space program and said he was a massive prick. Vain to the point that if ypu made improvements to any of his work that he wasn't involved in he took it as an attack and came for you.

He was in the SS and worked to death over 20,000 Jewish laborers to build Vengeance rockets to drop on the UK.

“Once the rockets are up, who cares where they comedown?? That is not my department!” -Tom Lehrer’s Satirical Song 1965 Full Quote: "Don't say that he's hypocritical / Say rather that he's apolitical / 'Vonce ze rockets are up, who cares vere zhey come down? / Zhat's not my department,' says Wernher von Braun".

Noticed that too. But also that bookshelf lines up perfectly with his desk and we don’t want to ruin that do we.

The development of the V2 was bad enough, but the real horror were the conditions of the slave labourers who were forced to work on them
More people actually died making them then in their use. About 12,000 vs 9,000.

Do we blame HIM? Or do we blame the country/agency that hired and protected him knowing what he was in order to make sure they got the knowledge? Or do we blame them both? Russia got their share of the nazist with knowledge. Pragmatism is sometimes a calculation of cost and sacrifice of what is ”right”.

Annie Jacobson wrote a great book recently about the operation to bring Nazi scientists to the US after the war. It’s called Operation Paperclip. But yeah, this guy 100% qualifies as a Nazi-bitch.

Sub Note: Just 20 years earlier a small group of survivors of the Nordhausen concentration camp underground V2 Rocket Factory, seen after US Army liberation. Von Braun was well aware of the many thousands that slowly perished after being forced as slaves to enable his dreams... as were the top US political figures. image
