Looking at your 3rd great grandmother I am reminded of a line from Shakespeare: “Tho she be but little, yet is she fierce”. (I say this as a v short woman myself.)
Most definitely. It’s funny because a lot of us in the family are built just like him.

I appreciate that but we pretty much know their whole biography lol. And they’re most definitely labeled. My dads side of the Family has a documented tree going back to the late 18th century.
They did. They endured and loved their children and grandchildren. He’s actually biracial due to slavemaster sexually abusing my 4th great grandma. Sorry for the uncut truth but that’s the story.
Be proud to shout that truth out loud! I am so over the whitewashing of slavery.

I feel ya, if we are going to acknowledge history we HAVE to acknowledge slavery. I also feel the First Nations don’t get their story told enough as well.

There is a special place in Heaven for those born into slavery.

More people need to realize that we are only 3-4 generations removed from slavery: that’s NOTHING in the grand scheme of time. Some folks
Only 2-3 if they are elderly were lucky enough to know their great grandparents! What a gift for your family to have not just their stories, but actual photos for your family. I’m a historian by trade, and things like this… man, I’m a little teary over here. Thank you so much for sharing!
It's amazing you have a picture going back this far! My great grandparents used to make walking sticks that looked like this out of tree branches! They were sturdy and coated in shellac to make them shiny, I still have one.
Wow what a legacy. I hope they had good lives post slavery.

What a rare and precious family heirloom! You must treasure this old photograph so much!! So many people of all races don’t know who their first g-grandparents were, and it is so much more difficult to trace the histories of formerly enslaved ancestors. I love how you and your family have built your trees and know their stories. One of my cousins photographed many of our old pictures and digitized them, so they are available to anyone in the family.
He was born in Tennessee, while she was from Florida and ended up on the same plantation as him. When they got their freedom they moved to Ft Smith Arkansas where my maw maw(2nd great grandma) was born. Then they all ended up in Oklahoma in Muscogee/Tulsa where my great grandpa was born who ended up marrying a Yuchi/cherokee/catawba woman, my great grandma.
Wow, thanks for sharing. May their memories be a blessing.

Did they get to be interviewed in the WPA Narritives?

If they did I’m not aware of it. They passed down the history to my maw maw(their daughter), she passed it on to my grandma/great aunts and uncles, who passed it on to us.
What year was this roughly? How cool to have such an old photo to remember your ancestors! But also a reminder that slavery in the USA wasn’t too long ago 😢
Your Great Grandmother looks like she was a really nice lady. Think of all the advice and guidance she could’ve given her offspring. If they ever build a time machine I’d definitely go back to see her 😊 Thank you for sharing OP
This is amazing! So much history like this has been lost. An actual photo is just incredible. A bit envious of this time capsule of a life lived. My great great great was from Scotland and sold himself into bondage in Australia so he could buy his freedom to the US. Not much survived from that time, long boat ride back then. Just to get a glimpse would be amazing. Looks like a very loving couple. I hope they had a peaceful life after what they endured.
