i'm not current on the academic literature, but generally i can see the conversation going like this, "we just say ex-slave. and someone replies saying like it wasn't a job- they were forced into this life. okay we'll say freedman. and someone replies people in the US are not supposed to be born like this, it isn't like they were granted freedom by their owners. okay how about formerly enslaved? okay that works."
