Genuine question: is the term “ex-slave,” “freedman,” or “formerly enslaved” generally preferred in the modern day? I’ve heard all three.

i'm not current on the academic literature, but generally i can see the conversation going like this, "we just say ex-slave. and someone replies saying like it wasn't a job- they were forced into this life. okay we'll say freedman. and someone replies people in the US are not supposed to be born like this, it isn't like they were granted freedom by their owners. okay how about formerly enslaved? okay that works."

My grandfather would have been 26 when this was taken. He lived a full life and died in 1996. I would love to know more about John Smiths story.

When my 91 year old Gramma who was 2 when this picture was taken also living in NC says to me,it’s not so long ago that she met “Jim Crow” it brings tears to my eyes.
