That's a very good brother, who wanted justice for his sister. I hope that she is resting in peace.

He probably couldn't go on further without seeing justice for her. When you love someone that much, you make decisions that put your own life on the line in sacrifice.

Or perhaps he felt people continued to assume it was him..

Just imagine if they hadn't found any foreign DNA on her, or if it had degenerated after all that time underground. That was a heroic thing to do for her. But wasn't DNA already used in criminal cases in 1995? From what I remember from Forensic Files episodes about the first use of DNA in court, it was well before that.

>But wasn't DNA already used in criminal cases in 1995? They needed advanced probabilistic genotyping and a database to catch the suspect, none of which were available until the early 2010’s. They also used mitochondrial DNA which in theory was possible to extract and analyze in 1995 but certainly not anywhere near standard at the time (first US case was 1996).

Yes. 1987 in USA.

Similar in the U.K, this was the first dude caught that way in the U.K. in 1986: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Pitchfork However, although DNA evidence could be used, there were no DNA database at that time. That came later. Collin Pitchfork was caught because the police knew it was someone from a particular village so every man in the village agreed to DNA testing.
Sufficient_Depth_19523 赞2025/9/27
Colin Pitchfork wasn't caught in the first round of screening 'cos he got some vulnerable guy that he worked with to provide the specimen. They got him in the end though.
Colin Pitchfork

I wanted to look the brother up and see what he was doing now and unfortunately it looks like he killed himself in 2021. It seems like the loss of his sister and the strain on the family was too much. https://www.yourtango.com/crime/who-killed-nicole-van-den-hurk-details-murder-investigation
Educational_Gas_9266 赞2025/9/27
That's heartbreaking. I hope that he is also now resting in peace. He must have truly loved his family members very much.

12 years .....for rape and manslaughter? How not murder? Sigh
12 years prison *plus* mandatory admission to a psychiatric criminal institution for as long as the psychiatrists there deem him likely to recidive.
No he only got prison, he'll probably have to sit like 9/10 years and then be out Edit: he did actually get forced psych for another rape in 2000 so he wont get out for the forseeable future

Has more to do with professional help vs punishment politics. Im usually for to give care and rehabilitate ppl rather than locking them up for ever in shit conditions but for violent sex offenders…. Toss that key dammit
>Has more to do with professional help vs punishment politics. >Toss that key dammit Right? Why can't we just apply logic ffs. If its murder (especially with a history of previous violence AND the rape) then their sentence should be perpetual life, they can never be safely let out into the public again. Now if it's just murder give them life but stipulate that they can be released if they are shown to have changed by professional psychologists and the victim's family agrees. This isn't hard.
European justice system is too kind. Rehabilitation works with thieves and vandals, not child murdere Why should this man be given leniency over the potential people he could hurt
But they have far less recidivism than the US does.
Lol im definitely not saying the US prison system is better, doesn't even come close it's horrendous. I just think some things could be changed like much longer sentences for repeat offenders involving cases like this.

Something about him being her stepbrother and not her biological brother has always moved me. I feel like it further speaks to the purity behind his motives and how much he truly loved her 💗
And like, the way step siblings get sexualized in media is so sad and gross. A portrayal of actual sibling love between step siblings is refreshing.

I have 2 blood sisters and 3 stepbrothers and they all annoy the shit out of me and I’d step in front of a bullet for all of them. I fully understand the brother in this story. I’d do the same if it happened to one of my siblings.

It's incredible that her stepbrother's desperate act, born purely out of love, is what finally broke the case. The fact that the real killer had such a violent history makes it even more chilling. That family's relentless pursuit of justice is honestly inspiring.

Is it me or these two look like Taylor Swift and Jim Carrey?

This fool thought he was in the clear and totally didn’t see this coming lol happy for her finally getting the justice she deserved decades ago but that step brother took a massive gamble and could’ve been behind bars for something he didn’t do luckily DNA existed and he got very lucky

I've heard of this case before and what her brother did, and the first time I read about it, the title just mentioned her "brother" and didn't clarify it was her STEP brother, and I thought to myself wow, I can really see the family resemblance! It was these two same pictures, too lol. Then I realized OHHH they aren't even related by blood. Strange. I still think that, too lol. Before it registered with me what case this was I thought oh they definitely look like siblings lol
