My father was in the Navy (not there, but it was a BIG DEAL among the sailors/aviators) when this happened and has been disgusted and offended by this since 1968.

Iv never seen this photo before, most of what I know about the event comes from eye witness accounts. The Isreali attack on USS liberty isn’t exactly common knowledge, so I’d say this is definitely a rare photo.

The fact the US government accepted the official Israeli explanation when Sec of State Dean Rusk said the Israeli explanation made no sense and all the survivors have said for years that the American flag was flying is absurd. Plus the Lavon affair shows that Israel would plan false flags against the US with absolutely zero repentance.

The USS Liberty was a U.S. Navy intelligence ship patrolling off the Sinai Peninsula when it was attacked by Israeli jets and torpedo boats. The two-hour assault resulted in the deaths of 34 American personnel and left 171 wounded. Israel claimed the attack was a tragic mistake due to poor visibility, but this explanation has been met with skepticism by U.S. officials and survivors. The incident strained relations between the U.S. and Israel, although Israel later paid compensation for the losses.
