So, how soon after this photo was the mega dam built?

12 years and the dying of an entire tribe - an entire language died out because of death squads

From what I found it didn't start until 22 years later- March 2011.

This gives me a lot of thoughts about the monopolization of force by corporations and governments. In a conflict between a corporation and a smaller interest, a corporation can use institutional violence and physical violence and never suffer the same consequences as an individual doing a fraction of the same. It's like the difference between wage theft and small item theft in retail.
The only face of concern is the lady directly behind him. Everyone else just seems... happily surprised? lol

Probably hoping for this so they could use it as an excuse to bring in the death squads. “They were being violent and I felt threatened”

The usual response to this shit is the construction crew pulls back for a minute and the “security contractors” show up. Things do not get better from there.
Very few people actually give a fuck about indigenous rights. These people deserve to be left alone if they want to.

The Aztecs were not indigenous to central Mexico. They were hated by the tribes that were pushed out by them, who themselves had pushed out the tribes of the areas they now occupied. The Spanish used that fact to their advantage. Etc.
It's wild to me that the official's argument was about "poverty" when her entire point is that their wealth is the land itself. That machete wasn't just a threat, it was a physical representation of "we will cut your colonial logic to pieces." The dam was probably built anyway, but this moment perfectly captures the refusal to have their values defined by outsiders. Absolute legend.
This is pretty much how humans have always been towards other humans. Indigenous tribes like the Aztec, Mayas, Incas, Sioux, Comanche, etc. were no angels and enforced their will on weaker villages around them. I'm sure the Brazilian government eventually did the same to this tribe. That's just kind of how it works.
