This is one of their slightly later meetings lol. The woman in the background smiling is Kabaeva's rhythmic gymnastics coach, Irina Viner. Kabaeva won the all around gold in rhythmic in the 2004 Olympics. Svetlana Khorkina, the woman to her left with the disgusted look, won silver in artistic gymnastics. Kabaeva actually ousted Viner a few months ago and took over the Russian rhythmic program. Viner has had an iron grip on the program for decades and is married to a Russian oligarch who is friends with Putin. Viner is notoriously abusive, she produced a documentary that was basically just her screaming and verbally abusing her gymnasts for an hour. If that's what she's willing to show, what isn't she? Viner has paired up many of her gymnasts with Russian oligarch, pretty much as a reward for winning medals. She sucks, but so does Kabaeva. Thankfully the Russians are still banned from international competitions *for now* (though they keep letting Russians in as "neutral athletes", total horse shit) Oh and Svetlana Khorkina is a POS too. She and Kabaeva were in the Duma together, Russian parliament. I'll attach a photo of that in a reply since I can only add one. It's funny, because Khorkina has always been almost a stereotypical Russian villain even when competing. She'd yell at her teammates when they screwed up, very divalike and dramatic. A fun villain to root against. It's less fun now. Obviously. Sorry to see her have gone this route.

I also know next to nothing about gymnastics but I believe they’re required to stick both of their arms up to salute the judges. If they fail to do this then they can get penalized.

It’s ironic. I started subscribing to the NYT when Trump won his first presidency in 2016 thinking that honest journalism needed to be paid for in order for it to survive. I started questioning their political framing leading up to the election.
