reading comments here made me realize so many ppl were not even aware of what french algerian war of independence was… and fucking savage the french were even in the 1950-60s
No one knows this history because France buried it. It's barely brushed over in schools. I'm half Algerian and never knew the extent of it until a few years ago. There's also a lack of outrage because of how rampant racism is. I really recommend reading 'Architecture of Counterrevolution' by Samia Henni, which really digs into systems of oppression, displacement, surveillance, and control of the Algerian population. Edit: please see the comments of people referring to Algerian resistance as "terrorism" and defending colonialism TO THIS DAY as proof of the deeply colonialist and racist legacy that is nurtured and grown like so much mould in present-day France Edit2 : I really appreciate hearing from fellow Algerian people, mixed or not. It feels so nice to be a part of such a keystone community in France and I've been so enlightened finding out more about our history and not the version of events we're normally served. I think French people in the comments protesting about whether or not Algerians were allowed an independentist movement and still perceiving resistance against a brutal military colonial regime as unnecessary are really driving my point home in a major way and showing the dire need for a proper education on the subject. As I mentioned, French military archives from the Algerian occupation have only just become public in 2022, and researchers are now working with more material than ever. There is a reason why people abroad know so little of the Algerian war and struggle for independence, so we must keep talking about it. Remember that there is a reason why people are jumping through elaborate hoops trying to justify colonial violence. Do not let them!!!

I'm French and i learned it in school in the 90s. It's not buried, it's just ugly. And you got tons of sources of this period. How people who fought nazis 15 years before where using the same methods and so on, torture, execution without trial, the guillotine working every day etc etc.
Still remember seeing some comments that sounded like French nationalists. How Algeria would come crawling back to France asking for forgiveness, it felt sick that this is how they dehumanize their desire for independence
They still do and have tried to police Algeria even after independence. A couple years ago our government [pressured Algeria to change their revised anthem as it mentioned French colonialism.](https://trt.global/world/article/13611596)
I know, I came in here thinking, "ok there's no way redditors will defend this vile shit." First comment: "well you know, maybe they were criminals." Like DUDE.

Sadly, some people here seem more interested in justifying oppression than having an honest discussion

When staying in France came across some pics that someone tried to burn in the fire of Algeria. Some pretty shady images. What happens on the road stays on the road.

My blood boils when I see these photos. We, Vietnamese, beat the crap out of them in 1954 but after that instead of granting us a unified independent country they called in extremely heavy cavalry and we had to fight for our freedom for another 20 years against Americans. My work passee French embassy and everytime I see it I wanna sling poo on that building.
Man came too ‘All Lives Matter’ this one. \*take several seats.

Would you like to see French soldiers posing with Algerian heads ?

That would be a photo that requires no context, are you saying the context for this photo is that these Algerians are about to be executed?

Reddit is insane. I thought there's no way redditors will defend this fucked up shit: Redditors: "well maybe they were like criminals or something. They shouldn't have committed a crime." Another comment actually tried the whole "muh both sides equally bad". Like I don't think any of you motherfuckers would be saying that same shit if your own country got invaded and brutalized like that. Real easy to talk all that shit behind a computer. It's the same mentality that bullies have. "You weaker, I use force to dominate you." Honestly, that's so sick and fucked up.
During the independance war, Paris police lead by Maurice Papon (took part in the deportation of Jews) murdered between 48 and 200 Algerians, taking part in a pacific demonstration for independence, by throwing them in the Seine, beat them to death or shot them. Papon will be convicted for crimes against humanity for his role in the deportation of Jews in 1998. He never faced consequences for the 17 October 1961 massacre
My grandfather was a paratrooper in the French foreign legion and was in Algeria for several weeks. I interviewed him before he passed away and it was very interesting.
He fled from his abusive step father after the ending of WW2 and joined the legion at the age of 17, lying about his age. He was seeking an adventure and joined the paratroopers as a sniper, because that was the branch with the most action. It was very important for him to tell me that he never shot civilians and prisoners (ofc I can't check on that). His first mission was the protection of French oil fields in the south, after that he was part of the French counter insurgency campaign. From the stories he told me the Arabs were very brutal as well, force recruiting minors and committing terrorist acts against civilians. He ended up in the coup Etat against Charles de Gaulle, after generals who didn't share his vision of independence for Algeria rebelled. It's an incredible story in my opinion. PS: I don't want to justify or detract from the French crimes committed in Algier, which probably dwarfed actions by the Arab rebels. This is just the perspective of one young soldier in the foreign legion.
And we wonder why the legacy of colonialism is still felt to this day.

Felt? More like colonialism is becoming mainstream again.
“感受”到了吗?
与其说感受到了,不如说殖民主义又开始回潮了。

theres a picture of beheaded algerian next to french soldiers, that one stuck with me...western colonization was just terrorism but we somehow dont call it that!
Watch the movie Algiers or read the wiki article about the war. Both sides were brutal, towards the end of the war the French more so. In the end the Algerians have the moral upper hand because the French colonized them.
Exactly. Brutality existed on both sides, but one side was fighting for independence and dignity, the other for maintaining control over a colonized people. That moral difference matters
It really does highlight the absurdity of racism doesn’t it? If you changed their clothes and told me those were two southern French guys I would believe you. The in-groups and out-groups are not actually defined by physical features or even cultural distinctions (at least not fundamentally), but by power. If you're the French or the English and you have power, then you are 'one of us' and will do what you can, and if you're Algerian, Indian, Irish etc. and you don't have power, then you are the 'other' and will suffer as you must. So it has ever been.
France is still doing despicable shit in Africa. But of course EU doesn’t care. Trash.

This is a nice video about a famous Algerian resistance leader Abd El-Kader, he was known for his compassion and human rights. Even french prisoners became later followerers or was meeting him in France when he was locked up, He also protected christians from being massacered in Syria. It's a very inspring and interesting story, a kind of the Algerian Ghandi. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zqjgPr3zlBE&t=260s&pp=ygUaQWxnZXJpYSBsZXRzIHRhbGsgcmVsaWdpb24%3D
I have seen worse pics, I am algerian and french by birth. And i have met so many freaks in france that miss those days. My gramma was one of the women who has to get face tats to stop the french soliders from forcing themselves on her.
Watch "The Battle of Algiers". It was banned in France for a decade.

many people, especially in the West, view france as this liberal country that loves everyone. We in Africa have not seen that side at all, so when africans say they dont like the french government or its policies in Africa, why are we shut down and painted as if we are saying propaganda? France did good and bad in Africa, but they did more bad than good and you can call me a liar of propagandist if you dont belive me or dont like what i say, but that doesn't change the facts and you dont know more about my own continent than me
As a Moroccan, I have my eternal respects to our Algerian brothers who gave their life fighting the Colonial Invader. France, in one of the longest and most brutal Independence wars in the Arab World (eight long years). May their soul rest in peace.
