this sub only shows up on popular when it's Rhodesia or North Africa. If I had a nickel every time this sub shows up, I'd have a couple nickels and it's weird that it keeps happening.

It’s comical to me that out of all the places the White supremacists tried to have their own state was a place surrounded by black people, for hundreds of miles. Why not try Europe or something?

White supremacy is an oversimplification of how Rhodesia chose to incorporate and restrict ethnic diversity. While there is evidence of supremist ideology, it is often intermixed with elements of an oligarchy that reinforces ethnic supremacy to maintain an established hierarchy of power. Racism is often just another tool in the arsenal of union busting

I remember reading about a guy who wanted to be a mercenary, answered a classified add in the back of Soldier of Fortune, got hired to be a soldier in some African country. The flight he was on landed just as the airport was captured by the rebel forces. Things did not go well for him after that.

A colleague in the Oil and Gas industry from South Africa had another colleague who was one of the Selous Scouts during the Bush War. The guy would occasionally get drunk and talk about his time in the scouts. One day he started talking about a recon patrol they were on. They ran into a kid herding goats. They couldn’t let him go as he would give their position away. While they were debating what to do, one guy says he’ll sort it out and walks off with the boy. Ten minutes later he walks back wiping down his knife. The guy apparently still screams himself awake at night.

This is a very common bit of military folklore. It is an old tale that keeps getting retold, with different wars as the background. The first time I heard it decades ago, it was set in Vietnam but it was an old tall tale even then.
I don't think it's folklore. It's just how wars are. My dad had a similar experience when he was in jump school, and he was going to be deployed to Vietnam. One of his trainers was an officer who was getting drummed out, my dad respected the man, and asked why he was getting the boot. The basic story was that the army was trying to get ahead of scandals after My Lai, and the officer had ordered a village burned because his squad's patrols kept getting ambushed regularly and the only place they could find that could support enemy forces in the area was this village. The village leadership refused to give any information about the ambushers, so the officer decided to prioritize the safety of his men over these people's homes. As my dad tells it, that's when he decided to go AWOL, because he both agreed with the officer's reasoning and also never wanted to be in the position of having to make a similar choice. He spent years running from the military and dodging the FBI before his parents managed to get a lawyer that could get him amnesty, i think during the Carter era.
Consistent_Drink217127 赞2025/7/14
That sounds made up. The Army was NOT kicking people out for that kind of thing. And if he was being kicked out, he wouldn't be assigned as an instructor at jump school. And if he was, he wouldn't chat about war crimes with trainees

I'm gonna ask it: why are there so many arguments in these comments over Rhodesia? From my limited knowledge it was a colony that practised slavery and lasted 14 years and the country that proceeded it was also racist and is crashing hard due to that; living the same death Rhodesia had. Edit: all of my assumptions were right; racists can't stop jerking it to the idea of them once holding power for less than 20 years for the six thousanth time while the "worse and incapable" institutions all outlive them by hundreds of years.

During the war the Rhodesian armed forces decided to attempt to recruit foreigners to bolster it's dwindling reserves. They sent out suitably macho ads like "be a man among men" and "Terrorists stop here" which hit a nerve with the "too young to kill asians" in US society and "I want to do my bit for colonialism" crowd in the UK. They advertised in "soldier of fortune" magazine and a particular demographic in the US ate that shit up. This would probably be a similar demographic to "loves watching ICE Raids on the TV" today. Most recruits in this campaign got just enough time in the country to get pictures like this dude above and then were either sent home unsuitable or quit.

Was Rhodesia better run than Zimbabwe? Possibly. But one would have to be deluded beyond reason to believe that Black Africans should have continued living as second-class citizens in their own land. Rhodesia is gone—and rightfully so. We can (and should) criticize how ZANU has mismanaged the country, but that doesn't mean the racist regime it replaced was in any way better.

I can’t imagine being willing to die for “Rhodesia.” Just go home to England and listen to the Beetles while drinking tea, old chap. Editing to add an alternative statement - “Imagine being willing to die to hold on to the property your mommy and daddy stole and to keep people enslaved.” Love the downvotes. Enjoy your Sunday weeping for a slave colony that lasted a grand total of 14 years. I assume Monday is reserved for weeping over the Confederacy and Tuesday for Apartheid.

They weren't fighting to stay, they were fighting to maintain superiority over black people while exploiting them as cheap labor. There wouldn't be an effort to get the white colonizers out if they weren't there to rule over the natives rather than treat them as equals. Also a huge number of people fighting in the Rhodesian bush war were not Rhodesian. They used to advertise in American magazines. Just like the pro-apartheid terrorism a decade or two later, there were networks of recruits from connected right wing extremist organizations, from American KKK and Nazi party members to European fascist sympathisers. It was like the Spanish civil war, except the only foreigners joining were the fascists.

"Rhodesia" was a colonial project: those people basically tried to have an Apartheid state in the 1960's and 1970's. They rounded up black people as ~~cheap workers~~ slaves during the day, and parked them in ~~special villages~~ concentration camps at night. The belgian soldiers guarding the ~~special villages~~ concentration camps kept labelling any African trying to be free a "terrorist". And those idiots wonder why the Africans do not respect them! In their minds, they were protecting Africans from so-called "terrorists" (actual independantists). With a LOT of African people working at every possible job, and very few European colonizers to steal the profits (businessmen, farm owners, factory owners), the situation was unbearable, especially when every country around got rid of the Apartheid regimes and was more or less independant. So, of course, Rhodesia became a free state at some point and called itself Zimbabwe. If you want to see archive footage from Rhodesia, here's a belgian documentary about some of the last white farmers in Rhodesia. It's in French, and was filmed only a few years before this Apartheid bullshit collapsed. [https://www.sonuma.be/archive/rhodesie-les-croises-de-l\_empire](https://www.sonuma.be/archive/rhodesie-les-croises-de-l_empire)
[https://www.sonuma.be/archive/rhodesie-les-croises-de-l_empire](https://www.sonuma.be/archive/rhodesie-les-croises-de-l_empire)
