This is one of the reasons why I am skeptical that we will have a colony on mars anytime in the next 100 years. We can’t even manage oxygen levels in a closed system here on earth. We don’t grow food at scale at Antarctica, a place where it would be 1000 times easier than mars. We ain’t ready. We ain’t anywhere close to ready.
You’re right, but we’re ready for biosphere 3 IMO. The first was *35 years ago*. We have all the data from it, better equipment and technology, AI design and management systems…

we just nned an altrusitic visonary billionare..

For a second there I thought you said autistic
That's more achievable than an altruistic visionary billionaire

Ong me too they might as well add that

‘Altruistic billionaire’ is an oxymoron
“有大爱的亿万富翁”简直就是自相矛盾。

What if I just, yknow, throw a rock at the glass walls, like… really hard.

The truth is … we will never be ready. Space and the other planets are far, far too inhospitable to make long-term, or even medium term habitation practical.

In a weird way, I think even the concept of it is harmful. Uneducated people seem to think that if we mess up this planet, we can always just move to Mars. They don't realize that the undertaking to make that possible is orders of magnitude more difficult than taking care of the planet we already have.
The idea that space travel is going to save humanity instead of a handful of billionaires. If we have the technology to travel mars and make colonies then we have the technology to ruin earth

Not to mention the physical harm to our bodies caused by living in a place with different gravity, different hours of day/night, different atmosphere leading to different levels of space radiation etc. We’re very adapted to earth and there are so many things about living on Mars that would be difficult for our bodies to handle long-term
Well where do you think the idea for the movie came from buuuuuuddie

It was through this they realised the Trees inside without wind, would grow weaker than others on Earth because they didn't have the strength to be resilient enough. >In Biosphere 2, trees grew quickly but unexpectedly collapsed before reaching maturity due to the absence of wind, this lack of wind-induced stress prevented the trees from developing strong roots and trunks, including stress wood, which is crucial for structural support, the tree's weakness highlighted the importance of natural stressors in promoting resilience and healthy growth in trees.
Excellent, the party leader started using the inhabitants as test subjects for his fad low calorie diet, nearly all the animal life died, the oxygen level fell nearly 7 percent the inhabitants were constantly hungry and ended up eating their seed stocks, the combination of low oxygen and hunger left the humans in a desperately depressed and agitated state, insects started to take over and aggressive natural species of plant murdered off the nice ones the folks brought in. in short the experiment was wildly successful in showing entrusting the habitat of the earth to people is a bad idea.
apparently the starvation shrunk all of their organs and got rid of any inflammation they had. Some of them reported feeling younger after recovering from it all. It must have been the most brutal intermittent fasting anyone's tried in a long time.
Were they actually aging less or anything of that effect?

People into fasting love to go on about autophagy, where your body essentially eats old/damaged cells in an attempt to conserve resources. There might be something to it, but I haven't done enough research to say either way. Personally though, I've felt pretty great after doing 36 hour fasts. Right around the 24 hour mark, I'd suddenly get a surge of energy, my mind felt clearer, etc.
Yeah I doubt that even if autophagy is effective that it would do enough to make a noticeable difference after a day. I've always imagined it was to help you hunt as well.
either way, it is changing the chemistry in your brain and body. There could be benefits to that.

I've got something else that gives a rush, clear mind, changes my brain chemistry and helps me diet, Cocaine!!

I do intermittent fasting but only like 20 hours, and I also do long trail runs that end in a polar plunge (I run to a waterfall that has snow all around, sometimes it’s activity snowing while I’m soaking). Im also a middle school science teacher and I was trying to tell them how like the runners high plus the cold plunge makes my brain electrified, colors are brighter, I can think so clearly, surge of energy etc. One of my favorite students just has the most confused look on his face while I’m saying this and he just raises his hand and is like “honestly Mrs Peak, it sounds like you’re dying and your brain is trying to tell you that”. Lol
Sounds more like it shows that having non-experts make decisions regarding technical stuff is a bad idea. If the leader was controlling the diet of others, I wouldn't be surprised if he also made the decisions that led to the animals dying and the oxigen levels to lower.
When I look at the concept of a bio dome it seems like scale is incredibly important for a closed system like this. It makes me think of how large fish tanks tend to be more stable than small ones. My guess is that effective bio domes would have to be enormous to capture the complexity of nature and small imbalances would create cascading failures.
People were saying it was junk science from the get-go and the team inside did little to repair the reputation. There was some cheating going on- it was supposed to be sealed and self sufficient but not long into the program there was air exchanged, I forget the particulars but they tried to hush it up. Plus some human drama among the crew if I recall correctly.
