A tragic loss, made more painful by the deliberate effort to conceal the truth and silence the football star

No doubt about it, the died in the line of fire story was a huge mistake. But it was a very unpopular war and the story of him being killed by friendly fire would only make matters worse for the army at that time. They rolled the dice and lost.
The fuckin coward pigs murdered him and that war was a 100% shitshow instigated by greedy rich people.

In a way the politicians murdered every single fallen soldier in that war
No, his fellow soldiers literally murdered him. They shot him as he was screaming “I’m Pat fucking Tillman stop shooting!” from 30 yards away in the open with no enemy near him. The whole lost contact with friendlies excuse was also bs.
I didn’t know that… I knew he was killed by friendlies, but that’s horrible. Thirty yards is literally nothing. You can make out virtually everything at that range. You could almost read his rank and name tag at that distance… So the guys who scragged him, did they just personally hate the guy? Or was it deeper?
They murdered him. A football star has access to a publicist, and you can't let people with publicists have opinions you don't agree with if you're trying to manufacture consent for a war so you can bilk government contracts.
He was also in conversation with Chomsky - the author of Manufacturing Consent.

He was publicly against the invasion of Iraq, rumors ~~where~~ were he might have seen a bit too much and people got afraid he might give public testimony about some of the more inacceptable things they did down there.
He was in contact with Oliver Stone iirc and was going to do an interview

He had come out and said "This war is so fucking illegal". It sounds like those soldiers were instructed to take him out :(

Tillman said he joined the military to fight a war he disagreed with because he thought it was wrong that poor people were doing most of the fighting while he got paid millions of dollars to play a game he loved.
man i have huge respect for this guy. Too bad justice was not served for the pigs that murdered him. I hope he has peace now

Because this man loved his country, went overseas to fight for it, then found out he was running security for opium fields. Once he realized how involved we were in the drug trade, he became a threat.
They lied about being shot at. They fabricated a whole story and wouldn't let any of them talk to the family. Tight 3 shot group to the head, and they tried to say it was enemy fire.
It was only 10 yards or 9.1 meters away. Total bullshit. I don’t know how an accident can happen that close.

Nope. As Noam Chomsky famously said, “If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged.” And he’s correct.
>But it was a very unpopular war It's impressive how Americans have deluded themselves in believing they've always been opposed to the war in Iraq. The people overwhelmingly supported war in Iraq
I was a junior in high school in the South in 2002/2003. The teachers, some of whom went to college to avoid the draft during Vietnam, were against the war while the students were mostly in favor. They were also critical of Germany not joining. They were surprised when I told them that as a German that when I get back I would most likely have to do my military service and thus there would be a chance I would have to go there. The last part wasn’t even remotely likely, I still had two years of school back home and conscripts weren’t deployed abroad anyway. But it was a good tool to show them how quickly one‘s opinion changes when one is personally affected. It was a somewhat wealthy white suburb, none of them went to the military unless they really wanted to.
the fact that the Administration and Pentagon exploited his death for propaganda and gave a false narrative about the circumstances made his death even more tragic. Having said that, Pat was an exceptional character. Intelligent, loyal, humble and gave up a $3.6 million dollar NFL contract to serve his country.
Afghanistan wasn’t about oil, it was about opium. Which the Taliban have destroyed the poppy fields since they took over.
I believe Pat actually stated this about the poppy fields in his diaries while he was doing his service. They knew for a fact someone as high profile and idolized as him coming back from the war condemning the armies action would’ve been detrimental to the war effort. They showed up unwarranted to Pats funeral.
I’ve never read Pats diaries, but got my information first hand from a buddy who served at the same time as Pat. He personally had been sent with his unit to guard fields of poppy because the Taliban wanted them gone and would raid the fields.
When I was a kid and more radical I remember reading or hearing about this stuff when researching Naomi Klein shock doctrine, back in the early YouTube days I remember finding out more and more about what the war effort was about overseas. I didn’t hear about Pats story until years later but I knew it was from what he was experiencing from his service. He like many others who signed up thought they were procuring freedom and helping not terrorizing locals and strong arming foreign business.
As the other commentator said it was about opium or more precisely poppy fields, which the Taliban cracked down due to the opium addiction rising in Afghanistan, such action wasn't well received by USA pharmaceuticals. The funniest part is that since USA took control of Afghanistan they ramped up the poppy production which led to a massive increase in opium and derivatives available for sell in USA causing the opium epidemic for profit. All those suckers died and murdered innocent people so USA pharmaceuticals could sell opium to yanks and cause a wave of overdoses. Be sure to thank them for their service on causing an opioid epidemic o7
The roots of the opium epidemic began before Afghanistan. Doctors were handing out OCs like candy in the late 90s. When they cracked down on that in the 2000s people turned to the now available heroin, now that heroin is short, people are turning to fent. Afghanistan didn't help but the epidemic in america started with pharma
>to serve his country. You mean to kill and or oppresse people that never had done anything to harm the US?
>报效国家。
你是说去杀害或压迫那些从来没伤害过美国的人吗?

Incredibly high profile athlete who would’ve turned celebrity after his service. Someone as high profile as him coming out publicly and condemning the war or writing a tell all book about what was really going on overseas would’ve cause a major shit show back home. He was an American kid through and through as was his family so they couldn’t discredit him by conjuring up dirt Or false information to publicly disparage his character so instead they killed him overseas.

Murder, not kill. He is murdered for calling out the invasion of Iraq as illegal

He wasn’t murdered. He was killed by a trigger-happy special forces member with a chip on his shoulder. It was a tragedy. The scandal is that the Army covered it up and used his service/death as a recruiting tool. Jon Krakauer wrote a fantastic biography about Pat and the modern history of Afghanistan. Highly recommend it
It's sad how he died, but I can't get over this dudes chin. Brother looks like he could bite open a coconut.

The military did him a tremendous disservice by claiming he was killed by enemy troops. He stepped up and abandoned a lucrative career in the NFL to serve his country. I opposed the war from the beginning but Pat Tillman put his life on the line for what he believed. Very few of those who were so gung ho about the war did anything that even inconvenienced themselves, let alone put their lives at risk. Honorable dude.
When I imagine the epitome of American soldier, it looks like him. Handsome man.

Legitimate friendly fire incidents happen more often than you’d think (up to 20% of casualties in some conflicts). It’s tragic what happened, but somewhat understandable. War is chaotic and disorienting. Their unit was in a bit of a situation—fired upon, broken down vehicle in hostile territory, in a narrow canyon. Tillman and others separated from the vehicle as repairs were underway; they eventually came back and approached from the top ridge after the vehicle was back in action, pushing through the canyon. The soldiers inside the vehicle mistook Tillman’s approach as hostile and opened fire.
Yeah but if it’s so easy to explain his death shouldn’t have been covered up. Also, from my understanding he was shit at less than 10 yards. All seems a little sketchy especially considering that the Pentagon tried to cover it up after and his comments about the war.
This is what being a solider is all about. You can be as brave and as chisel jawed as you like. One day you just get squished between the sides and thats your valor and your bravery, worth nothing next to some mortar rounds.
My high school social studies teacher said it best “ to you think they send their kids to die in a war”?, the answer is no just the poor desperate or uneducated.
