They're not forgotten. The issue is that most people primarily learn the history that directly affects them - history tied to their country, their people, and those who look like them. I’d guess you’re not East Asian? But they know. They remember. And I'd be willing to be just as many people in East Asia don't know who Mengele is. That’s just how history education works when it’s crammed into a few underfunded school hours a week. The best thing we can do is encourage curiosity and a desire to self learn beyond what’s taught in classrooms. And if we're talking about the Redditsphere... I read his doctorate thesis. Not only was it complete rubbish, it was also the bare minimum effort possible at the time and one of many on the same topic.
I think he was completely incompetent and used the opportunity to appear as if he was capable of doing scientific work. That explains why his experiments were not only needlessly cruel but also completely useless.

It's totally false. There were zero scientific advancements because of Nazi medical experiments. The research was so poorly done without proper control groups. Even ignoring the cruelty and evil that went into it, it was plain and simple bad science.

One Auschwitz survivor living in Brazil was with her family and knew about Mengele living in a city Far from there. She had a panic attack because she was in a group used as experiment and met Mengele there. They had to enter on a tank with boiling water, stay submerged for some time then go out and enter on a freezing water tank. Mengele pulled his gun and pressed her head down in the water otherwise she would be killed there. She suffered a lot. Think about the possibility of meeting him again gave her panic attack for days.

Never saw that photo of him with his coat, but it is known from the prisoners, that he had a white uniform (not a doctors coat) with white gloves and a white hat when he selected prisoners on the ramp. That was why they called him "Angel of Death", as he looked very different in this clothes than the prisoners and the SS men.
