Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem should be required reading, particularly now. TLDR: she argues based on her reporting of the trial that Eichmann was not evil (in fact coining the “banality of evil”) but just a bureaucrat who was very good at his job and never questioned what that job supported or accomplished. It’s a good life lesson to always question what we do or support thoughtlessly in our everyday actions and roles…this is particularly important for us Americans in our actions in the next four years.

Something to note is that according to contemporary studies, it's hard to believe that Eichmann was just "following order" and wasn't a committed nazi. See 'Eichmann before Jurusalem' by Bettina Stangneth

There was a lot of international outcry about it at the time. Israel's rendition of Eichmann and subsequent execution was condemned by the UN. The more things change, the more they stay the same. . . . Israel is always under a microscope and every imagined transgression is blow up into a matter of grave international concern. And Israel, to survive, has learned that it must play by its own rules and not the rules that others would prefer.

Under a microscope? Israel has been treated with kid gloves for the longest of times. China got sanctioned for alegations that if all were true still would make the Westbank look like heaven, for not to say anything abput Gaza. I've never seen a country have so many others look away, not even the US gets treated that gently...

Yeah, one of the architects of the plan called “Endlösung der Judenfrage” loosely translated as “final solution to Jewish question”. Plan was created in 1942 in Wannse. 90% of Polish Jews were murdered in extermination camps + many more from other nationalities. I once, long time saw a sort of a theatrical reenactment of the Wannse meeting (sort of a TV Theatre show). It was chilling on how it was portrayed when they were discussing extermination of the whole ethnic group (women, children, elderly and men) while having drinks and casually joking around …

The fact that Israel has hundreds of resolutions against them by the UN, more than any Middle Eastern country, more than Russia, more than China speaks volumes. Think of the amount of countries in the world that represent themselves in the UN. Many countries with human rights abuses, freedom of speech, authoritarian dictatorships actually form many, many countries. Now imagine them being the ones that vote. It's insanity and it's broken.

Fuck Eichmann, but it’s not like Israel just “captured” him. They sent Mossad (Israel’s equivalent of the CIA) to go grab him in an unannounced and unsanctioned operation on Argentinian soil. The UN resolution stated “repetition of acts such would involve a breach of the principles upon which international order is founded, creating an atmosphere of insecurity and distrust incompatible with the preservation of peace” while also acknowledging that “Eichmann should be brought to appropriate justice for the crimes of which he is accused” and that “this resolution should in no way be interpreted as condoning the odious crimes of which Eichmann is accused.”

>Fuck Eichmann, but it’s not like Israel just “captured” him. They sent Mossad (Israel’s equivalent of the CIA) to go grab him in an unannounced and unsanctioned operation on Argentinian soil. Well look what happened with Josef Mengele. > Langbein and Wiesenthal pressured the West German authorities into starting extradition proceedings, and an arrest warrant was drawn up on 5 June 1959. > Argentina initially refused the extradition request because the fugitive was no longer living at the address given on the documents; by the time extradition was approved on 30 June, Mengele had permanently fled to Paraguay and was living on a farm in Hohenau, near the Argentine border. Argentina bought Mengele's enough time to resettle in Paraguay (a destination that Mengele used often for holiday retreats) Then again, when West Germany was pressuring Paraguay, Mengele saw the writing on the wall and fled again, this time to Brazil.

His son, Klaus, was using the Eichmann last name, dating a German Jewish young woman in Argentina and boasting to her of his dad’s Nazi exploits. The young woman told her father, who alerted people in Israel. She did some spying for her father. This was 1956, a few years prior to Eichmann’s capture. She even went to the Eichmann house and Adolf himself answered the door, but said he was Klaus’s uncle. However, Klaus referred to him as “father.” It took time and great planning to get Eichmann. In 1972 the Jewish girl’s father, Lothar Hermann, was bestowed with a reward for his role in capturing one of the most wanted Nazis. He had moved to Argentina in 1938 and he and his daughter played an important part in that monster’s demise.

Don't think a whole bunch of German Jews made it past 1938 still living in Germany. He's a survivor in the sense that he got out at the nick of time. The Nuremberg Laws were passed in 1935, the annexation of Bohemia and Kristallnacht were both in 1938. EDIT: Adding in because I've seen some responses below to my comment a weird denial of what a Holocaust survivor is. While there's no simple definition and unified definition of the term, most qualified definitions include refugees. Refusing to acknowledge the breadth and depth of the Holocaust and the atrocities the Nazi regime committed, is not a good road to go down. We should all take a moment to recognize the complexities (and actual simplicity) of their rise to power, their re-writing of fundamental laws of German society, their use of violence and threats of violence, and their ultimate industrialized violence. I think sometimes people think the Holocaust only exists as train cars and gas chambers (understandable misconception), while they disregard the damaging law and policies that came before a single ghetto was wiped out. This is a form of Holocaust denialism, even if it is unintentional.

Eichmann hated Holocaust deniers. He looked down at Neo Nazis who diminished the Holocaust. It’s obvious why he felt so strongly about Holocaust denial. The murder of millions of Jews from Belarus, Poland, France, and Hungary was his life’s work. Holocaust deniers who , due to antisemitism and propaganda, genuinely doubted the extent of the atrocities were a bizarre phenomenon for a man like Eichmann. Eichmann was a high ranking member of the SS, and in charge of the Jewish file in the Nazi defense office. He was one of the few Nazis who actually attended the Wannsee conference where the “final solution” was decided. He witnessed the murder of the Soviet jewish population in the Belorussian capital Minsk. He recalls feeling physically sick at the sight of mass executions by firing squads. The psychological toll of firing squads, which Eichmann was well familiar with, led the Nazis to decide on the gas chambers, a more efficient method of mass execution. Eichmann later planned the mass transport of Jews from France, Hungary and elsewhere into the death camps in Poland. The terrible conditions in the trains were deadly and led to many thousands of deaths. He of course was well aware of the details of this massive genocide, which he helped plan. Eichmann knew everything about the murder of 6 million Jews. In fact, he was one of the first people to estimate that the number of Jews murdered was six million. Given his deep involvement with the Holocaust, when Neo Nazi Holocaust deniers came to his hiding place in Argentina to hear his take about the Holocaust, he scolded the deniers. These Neo Nazis were stupid and ignorant. Ironically, an old Nazi was the one who said that the Holocaust happened. Holocaust denial is a deeply antisemitic phenomena. Only the worst kind of antisemite would not believe the testimonies of so many Jewish survivors and their families. They believe Jews are liars and conspirators. Unfortunately, antisemitism is out of control these days, so we’re seeing a disturbing resurgence of the same old story

The guy aged ugly for a regime that pride itself as the Übermensch. Glad the Mossad caught him and gave him the rope. Sad that Joseph Mengele did not get the rope. He should have been used as human experiment for what he did as well too.

Nobody will see this but Hannah Arendt wrote "Eichmann In Jerusalem" and it really cemented in my mind that evil is not some Dr. Doom caricature, it's mediocrity and no one ever standing up to speak against evil itself. It's just gutless good intentions and letting awful things persist in a bureaucracy.

These conditions were far too nice for him.

Crazy seeing Redditors are upset that Israel captured a real Nazi and brought him to justice. When everyone is using that word in modern politics incorrectly to call anyone they don’t like a Nazi and saying things like “punch a Nazi if you see one”. But yah let’s give an actual Nazi, Eichmann a pass. Do you know how many actual Nazis got away with it and happily lived their lives in exile or in Germany ? The Latin American countries would never have prosecuted Eichmann. That’s sickening.

If there's a hell he's in it, he deserved a worse punishment.

There is a great book, Eichmann In My Hands, written by one of the guys who helped capture him. It's genuinely fascinating.

Awww poor Adolf Eichmann. He earned every second he spent in there no it's and or butts

He got off easier than he deserved.
