That is the coolest pic I’ve seen here in a long time. It’s someone’s personal photo, everyone looks cooler than cool, and it really captures a moment in time.
I love music. What kind of music did they play. What band would you compare their music to?

Looks like OPs dad was legendary jazz drummer Sunny Murray

Just read the bio. Tremendous innovator. Invited to join Coltrane's band but chose not to, presumably to continue with their Free Jazz. You don't get invited to Coltrane's band unless you're among the best players on Earth. Hot stuff OP. This is a serious photo.
My dad is a professional sax player (many albums and tours with R&B artists). Coltrane was considered a God in our household. For anyone to be considered to play with him is serious. Wow. In the words of my father… “he must wear special pants… cause he plays his ass off”
What R&B bands did your Dad play? I love R&B. From Louis Jordan in the late 40s to Anita Baker, el Debarge, Kool & the Gang, Philadelphia International Records... The whole thing.

Hes toured the east coast with the temptations and four tops for 40 years. As well as session stuff. Also…. If anyone came to town needing a horn section for a night or two (like when the symphony plays with (insert whoever here) he would contract for Sax, flute and clarinet. He also spent about ten years doing short tours with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. He’s done some cool stuff.❤️
I hear R&B just looking at the picture... 😁 I'm hearing something like "Grazing in the Grass" by Friends of Distinction or "Back Stabbers" by the O'Jays...
我脑子里正响着类似 Friends of Distinction 的《Grazing in the Grass》或者 O'Jays 的《Back Stabbers》那种歌呢……

Absolutely. They’re almost too cool for Tarantino

Grazing in the Grass is such a jam. I live for that moment when guitar solo kicks in.
《Grazing in the Grass》

I'll be honest mate, seeing this picture and reading your response "he really was" almost made me cry a little bit. Thanks for sharing, that must have been a great moment.
He was a boxer and a drummer, just all kinds of manly man. I was a geeky nerd, and he was proud of me every day of his life. He's gone, but I tear up sometimes too, remembering.
Albert Ayler has one of the best jazz discographies maybe ever. I know more than 10 people who would get on all 4’s to kiss the ground he walked on. I’ve actually listened to some Sunny Murray’s stuff just randomly before so this is pretty cool he is dudes dad.
This just made me really appreciative that my parents also have shown me unconditional love and support even though I didn't follow the path they envisioned for me. It's nice to be reminded of this while I still have them. Thank you.
Wow man, it must be rough having taken the coolest picture in your life that young. How do you even compete with that level of badassery? Awesome picture.
Man, you are underplaying how big of a deal your dad was. I have done a quick dive into his story and he was a pioneer in a whole new genre of music, the reintroduction of jazz, in a revolutionary way! By the way, I have read some of your comments and you said that you weren't artistic and not musically talented. Are you sure about that? In an interview with Clifford Allan, for an article for All About Jazz, he talks about putting out his own record. **S*****M:*** *I did it one time, and that's one of the things I have to fight for. I created my label in 1969, my record Love's Last Cry and I called my company Infinity. On the record was Jimmy Garrison, Lonnie Liston Smith; it was Frank Lowe's first record, Alan Silva, Joe Lee Wilson was singin,' there was a guitarist, I forget his name but he had a shop on 8th Street, 8th and 2nd Ave.* ***And five children singing****, three of them was Alan's* ***and two of 'em was mine.*** *It was a beautiful album.* OP were you singing on that record?

I probably am underplaying it. It took me a minute to realize he was famous enough that I was basically doxxing myself. It’s a weird situation. The mods removed at least one comment for identifying him, even though many people recognize him by sight. In the end I figured I will let his name speak for itself. A bunch of comments are things like “I just got finished listening to your dad’s music while cooking dinner”. I think he would have appreciated that, no need to hype it more.
do you understand how much cooler it makes you that this comment is basically saying "i did so much badass shit with my dad that this pic doesn't even register in my memory" haha
This was already my favorite post on this sub, now this comment boosted that 10x

Before I looked at the comments, I was thinking that nothing ever was going to be as cool as this and that we might need to retire the sub as having accomplished its ultimate goal (edited for typo that was driving me nuts)
No such thing! Haha, I listen to my local jazz station all the time, but I would be hard pressed to recognize any of the artists in a photo so that's a really cool level of knowledge that shows your passion for the genre!
From a bit of googling - left to right is Bob Reid, Sunny Murray and son, Kenneth Terroade, Byard Lancaster. At Zoo de Vincennes, Paris, 1971. Photo by Thierry Trombert.

Top-level submission, way better than old pics of celebrities. You look like one BAMF in that picture. You look like some kid who would go on to own Captial Records or something like that.
When I was in my early 20's I would tell my mom those pants were grounds for emancipation. 😄

If I was out crate digging and saw this on a record cover I’d very likely pick up the record. What was your dad’s band called?

Wait, as in legendary free jazz drummer Sunny Murray??? I saw him in Copenhagen 10-15 years ago. I think he maybe lived here for a while too back in the day?
Dude this might just be the lowest key namedrop I've ever seen!
"That's me. That's my Dad over there. Oh yeah my he was a pioneer of free jazz drumming in the 60's, no biggie."
Lmao. I don't know this guy but judging by this and other comments he seems like a bigger deal than OP's comically casual comments would suggest. Hilarious.
Ugh no, and it's my secret shame! I had any number of people try to teach me various instruments, but they never stuck. I ended up a programmer, so I guess the art gene skipped a generation lol.
No matter - you are every bit as cool as everyone else in this photo.

No worries, just curious. Your dad was a literal trailblazer of free jazz, like top of the tops. Him and Albert Ayler completely changed freedom of group improvisation, and played on some of my favorite albums of the 60s. Thanks for sharing the photo!
And if anyone knows, I’d love to know who the musicians are. Was wondering it Albert Ayler is carrying the sax case in front, and maybe Don Cherry behind him?
Don Cherry?
