In 1987 we played our wedding song on a record player. In 2001 the IPod came out. In 2022 our kids played their wedding song on a record player.

I'd rather play music from MCs on bulky walkman and have regular passenger flights to Moon and Mars colonies. I'm not sure if the technical development went in the right direction in last few decades. Have you seen 2001 Space Odyssey? We're far behind what was expected to be at the begining of 21st century in 60tees when American astronauts set foot on Moon.

"Kids," plural. "Wedding _song_," singular. Hmmm...

Sometimes it seems like society changed more 1910 to 1990 than it did 1150 to 1850

This is even more true when focussing just on computers. Moores law is an incredible example of exponential progress

And in 11 years we’ll be as far away from the second picture as the second is from the first

When Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947, Orville Wright was still alive, and Neil Armstrong was 17 years old.

The change that blows me away is 1776 - 1833, which was not a technological leap like this one but a philosophical/ethical/social/political leap. In 1776 the Americans decided that no kings were necessary or desired and 15 years later the French follow suit. By 1804 slavery is illegal in New England and the Haitians have revolted. In 1807 the United Kingdom outlaws the slave trade and by 1833 slavery itself is done in all their worldwide territories which is the death blow to chattel slavery in the West. Although there would be lots of backlash and backsliding (looking at you Napoleon) those 57 years ended the divine right of kings and birthed freedom for all people. Shit is wild.

55 years between now and that last photo and we have a US government that is backing down on vaccins, women’s rights, racial equality, basic healthcare, education and likely propagating flat earth conspiracies soon.

To be fair 1958 seems like forever ago as well. You could do the same thing with computers.

Wow! It's amazing to look back and see how far we came in such a short period of time. 66 is over half a lifespan, but on the mankind scale that is nothing. The pace of change is staggering. Random tangent - The first cars had tires which only lasted about 100 miles. Can you imagine what that was like? Now we complain about 30k miles. I want to highlight these changes and bring up climate change. Technological advancement will greatly increase our efforts to manage climate change. We are in the early stages of a several decade energy revolution. In about three decades all energy should be zero emissions. When that happens energy costs will be lower than they are today when accounting for inflation. People don't yet realize that solar and wind essentially set a fixed energy price for decades, unlike oil, coal, and gas which all keep rising in price. Then add in improvements in green energy efficiency. Between low energy cost and advances in technology it's just a matter of dollars and time to reverse climate change. Mankind is capable of great things and has accomplished so much that makes the world a better place. We are all just too caught up in our lives and read too much terrible news to appreciate the world as we should.
