That was exactly she did it, she knew she’d be photographed and followed where ever she went so may as well do some good with it. You’re so right. My dad treated patients with HIV and AIDS back then, so I would go with him to drop off medications or visit them in hospice. I was so grateful to have that opportunity during such a terrifying time.

If you're interested in learning more about the fear of AIDS that gripped the world during this time, I suggest you read "Bellevue: Three Centuries of Medicine and Mayhem at America's Most Storied Hospital" by David Oshinsky. The whole book is interesting, but the section on the AIDS epidemic is really eye-opening, even to me & I lived through that time.
