Reading Les Miserables right now, and there was a passage about how cats will stop in front of an open door and tease if they really want to walk in or not. And you have to say “Well, do you want to come in”. Perfect description of cats.

When he was a kid, my dad had a German Shepherd dog named Joe. He and Joe went everywhere together and did everything together. Joe would wait outside the school every day and they could walk home together. We have similar pics of Joe and my dad. When Joe died of old age my dad dug a hole and buried Joe all by himself. He was a teenager and announced to his family afterwards that he’d never have another dog. We did get a dog growing up (a stray we adopted) and my dad was kind to him but never bonded like the rest of us. My grandma said losing his best friend Joe broke my dad’s heart.
我爸小时候养过一只叫 Joe 的德国牧羊犬。他和 Joe 形影不离，干什么都在一块儿。Joe 每天都会在校门口等他，然后一人一狗一起走路回家。我们家也有跟我爸和 Joe 很像的老照片。

Very similar story about my pops. He loved this old Tom cat when we were young, and when he passed…Boy dad took it hard, vouched never to love another animal while he dug his grave. He just loved too much and wasn’t going to ever do that again (so he said).
Wouldn’t you know it, he is almost 80 now and this beautiful older stray found him. He kept trying to ignore her, but he fell in love! My mom sent me a picture of her sitting on his lap INSIDE the house.
我老爸的故事也差不多。我们小时候他特爱那只老汤姆猫，等它走了以后……天哪，我爸受打击太大了，边挖坑埋它的时候边发誓，说再也不养宠物了。他就是感情太充沛了，不想再经历一次那种痛苦（他是这么说的）。

There’s a clip of Jimmy Stewart reading a poem that he wrote about his dog, Beau, on one of the late-night shows and it makes me cry every time. This story made me think of that. Our family dog of one-month-shy-of-18 years old died several years ago (bichon-poodle). My dad has definitely said that he’s already sad about having to go through losing another dog—and we haven’t even gotten another one yet!

I am old lol but I have a vivid memory of watching him read that poem when I was like 8-9 staying up too late watching Johnny Carson. It was a gut punch of sadness to my little kid heart and I cried.
