The whole world saw that was handball apart from the ref.

As an aside, how awesome would it be (excluding England fans oc) to have this photograph signed by him?

He saw it too. Just was bribed in favor of Argentina.

Wasn’t it also offside?
No, a player from england was the last one to touch the ball before Maradona. He threw it back to the keeper in a very dumb way also.
thuglife_719 赞2024/2/21
I don’t know much about the rules of soccer, but the England player kicked the ball back towards the keeper. Hope that helps.

Has anyone else ever gotten away with anything so obvious and important on such a big occasion in sport?

In the stanley cup playoffs the Winnipeg jets once picked up the puck from behind the net with their hand knocked over the goalie and then threw it in on live tv and it counted and since it was in overtime that won the game.
If you’re talking about the game against the Blackhawks it wasn’t in the playoffs.

Thierry Henry against the republic of Ireland in a playoff to get into the 2010 world cup. Obviously not as big as this but devastating to Ireland who have still not qualified since 2002.
If I recall there was the old Olympics basketball game between the USA and the Soviet Union for the gold medal, where it was blatantly rigged for the soviets to win. They kept doing overtime and bullshit calls until the soviets ended up taking the lead. I saw this somewhere on YouTube a while ago.
So the rules don't actually allow it? How was this not basically match fixing?

Whaaaaat? Russia cheating? Surely not! There’s actually a long history.
I remember the Moscow olympics where they opened and closed the stadium entranceway doors to assist the Russian javelin thrower (who didn’t make the podium 👍)
The US men's team refused and still refuse to this day to accept the Silver, still sitting in a vault.

There is an entire HBO sports documentary about that game from 20 odd years ago. The Americans played half assed basketball most of the game with the coach employing old school, 1960’s ball with younger black run and gunners. They finally took the lead late in the game. The Russians were allowed three times by a Hungarian ref to in bound a ball with 3 sec left; the last one, they threw a full court shot, the Russian player literally shoved an American out of the way, and he grabbed the ball and banked it off the backboard. First Olympic loss ever for the Americans. The Americans refused the silver and the players have stated that they will never accept those medals, even posthumously.
Munich 1972. Warsaw Pact refs if I remember correctly.

Still not the worst thing that happened during Munich 1972, all things considered.

Germany in 2010, also a match against England and that goal could have put them back in the game

Nah we were outclassed in that game. And it wasn’t a player cheating just shit reffing.

I beg to differ. I remember watching that game. England had all the momentum at that period of the game. I bet if that equalizer stood, Engalnd would have been the favorites to go through.
Isn't that like against the biggest rule foooootball has?

I once read in an interview that he liked this goal more than that other he scored after feinting a ton of defenders, that speaks volumes.
dizzy_pingu121 赞2024/2/21
That goal was pure footballing talent, a beauty. This one is disgusting. As you say, it speaks volumes that he prefers his dirty cheating to his wondergoal.
Iirc, he said later, “It’s ok to steal from a thief.” Which was a reference to the Falkland Islands and the war England and Argentina fought over said islands two years earlier.
Ultimately it’s a big reason I have Messi above him. Not only did Messi accomplish everything Maradona did (while the reverse wouldn’t be true), Messi was always a fair player.
Messi is just better on every level. Even with the handball goal, Messi destroys Maradona.

No way to do that without voiding the cup that year. I think they just had to go with the ref's error.

this was the first goal, the second was the one where he beat half the england team, rounded the keeper and scored, as an Irishman it's debatable which was the better goal

Asked my Argentinian gf once why he was so loved. Considering all his embarrassments (cocaine habits). She said that they felt that he made them feel proud of being Argentinian because of the world up success and because he came from pure poverty to prosperity.
His job was to be a spectacular footballer, not a good/drug-free person. Argentina had recently lost a war and come out of the worst dictatorship in the country’s history into an economic crisis.
Dude came from absolute poverty. He played football to be able to bring food to his brothers and mum, literally. Guy was highly uneducated, hyper talented and surrounded by mafiosi that squeezed him dry.
People shit on him for his addiction, but I suspect he fell into them driven by his shady managers, not for recreational reasons. He still woke up earlier than his colleagues, trained harder than any other, and pushed himself to the limit, at least until 86/87, which he didn't have to, as he was already a superstar.
As an Argentinean with a background of poverty, I always saw him like the personification of the shitty romantic view of meritocracy which I despise. And his idolization to the point of justifying his mistakes annoys me to the bone. But a lot of people living in despair saw him as a beacon of hope, and I can understand that. When you have someone to believe in, a though life becomes more bearable. Especially after a military dictatorship, an economical crisis and a shitty war.
It's a very complex character, and fatally flawed for sure. But his cultural impact is unmeasurable too.
We can also point at Luis Suarez hand at the Ghana quarter finals in the 2010 World Cup. But everyone saw that one and a penalty was issued… Ghana missed the shot and to this day they are still saying the match was stolen (they lost at penalties).
My boss is Argentinian. We have no problem between us about the Falklands or the war that was fought there l, we have rational discussions. We do, however, have a problem agreeing on this. Many pub arguments have been had and never to resolution. I can also annoy him buy saying I think Brazilian beef is superior to Argentinian beef.
