One of the rare predictions of the future that turned out to be completely true in all the ways that mattered lol

I mean, I guess they didn’t predict that the ring could be turned off.

Tell that to all the boomers with obnoxious ringtones at max volume
Taking out their phone slowly, looking at the caller id for 10 seconds, all the while the ring is going off full volume

At a movie, every damn time

Accurate for older people who dont know how to use do not disturb option

What are you talking about? It’s always teenagers and young adults who have the loudest and most obnoxious phones at the movie theatre. EDIT: okay y’all, I’m in my 30s, I am not anti-young people lol. In my city, teenagers are by far the most disruptive at the movie theatre. The end.
Yeah I saw this as funny in an inaccurate way more than prophetic. The only prophetic thing is there's a phone in pockets. Everything else is uncommon.
It's so uncommon that when you go to a movie theather you're always asked to put your phone on silent or off. Huhmm
It just never goes off in theaters, it's against the laws of nature. It just can't.
I would love to know more about how the 1919 person thought a pocket telephone could work.

Radio was already being used at sea and during WW1. I think many of the foundational pieces were there/known. miniaturization probably seemed inevitable. What has me thinking now is how amazing it is that we all have our own…even with the physics of it (which the fundamentals lie in the 1890’s) the enormously complex systems to manage the connections and to find the receiver phone and route the connection required many other advances that weren’t yet imagined and couldn’t be without other fronts in technology.
Probably something to do with Mr. Marconi's newfangled radio waves!

I mean, Tesla fairly accurately predicted the idea of internet way back in 1937, and since telephones already were somehwat widespread enough in 1919, I would imagine that an idea for a mobile phone back then isn't too far-fetched, at least in a sense of it being a possibility. Sure, predicting a *smartphone* is far-fetched, but simply a phone you can carry around and make calls with isn't exactly jumping the gun.
Decades ago I liked to joke that one day we'd all have telephone implants. I don't joke about it any more.

damn this one was 100% right situationally even if they couldn't predict the applicable tech.

Man, I can’t wait until we have pocket telephones.

It's funny that the cartoonist thought the only pain in the ass would be the sound of the bell which is one of the things on a modern cellphone you can change or turn off. The major problem is people's addiction to it or their constant staring at the screen which is, I suppose, the same thing. Or their yelling into their phone in public places. The ringing of the phone strikes me as the least of all the annoyances of cellphones. It's mainly the way people use cellphones, not the phones themselves, that are the problem but this guy thought the phone itself would be the issue. Not quite.
